Thinking

Chapter 7: The Warning I Was Never Meant to Read

The name at the bottom of the letter stared back at me.

For a moment, I thought my mind was playing a cruel trick.

I blinked.

Then I read it again.

*Lucía Vega.*

My hands tightened around the paper.

But that made no sense.

Lucía had just called me.

Lucía had warned me about Alejandro.

Lucía had admitted she had kept secrets.

So why was there a letter from her hidden in my bedroom?

A letter I had never seen.

A letter that looked like it had been written years ago.

I turned the envelope over.

There was no stamp.

No address.

Only my name.

My name written carefully.

Not casually.

Not like a friend leaving a note.

Like someone preparing evidence.

I walked downstairs slowly.

Every step felt heavier.

Alejandro was still in the kitchen.

Teresa stood near the window.

Neither of them spoke when they saw my face.

Because they knew something had changed.

“What is it?”” Alejandro asked.

I held up the letter.

“Why did Lucía leave this?””

His expression changed immediately.

Teresa noticed too.

“What letter?””

I looked at Alejandro.

“Answer me.””

He stared at the envelope.

Then looked away.

That was enough.

I felt my stomach drop.

“You know about this.””

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

“You know about this,” I repeated.

He shook his head.

“I haven’t seen that.””

“Then why do you look terrified?””

He didn’t answer.

Teresa stepped closer.

“Mariana, who is Lucía?””

I looked at her.

The irony was almost unbelievable.

The woman who had spent years telling me she knew everything about my marriage didn’t even know the people who had warned me about it.

“Someone who knew your son better than I did.””

Alejandro’s face tightened.

“Don’t do this.””

“Do what?””

“Destroy everything because you’re angry.””

I stared at him.

“Angry?””

I laughed quietly.

“You still think this is about anger.””

I opened the letter.

The paper was old.

Slightly yellowed around the edges.

The handwriting was steady.

The first line made my heart stop.

*Mariana, if you are reading this, then Alejandro ignored my warning.*

I looked at him.

He looked down.

I kept reading.

*I don’t know when you will find this. I don’t know if you will ever find it. But I need you to know that I tried.*

My throat tightened.

*Alejandro is not the man he wants people to believe he is.*

I continued.

*He is not dangerous because he lacks success. He is dangerous because he believes success belongs to whoever can take credit for it.*

The room became silent.

Even Teresa stopped moving.

The next paragraph was worse.

*When I met Alejandro, I thought he was ambitious. I thought he was hungry. I thought he needed one opportunity.*

A tear fell onto the paper.

Not because I was sad.

Because I recognized those words.

They were exactly how I had described him.

*I was wrong.*

I looked at Alejandro.

He whispered:

“Mariana…”

I ignored him.

*He doesn’t want to build beside someone. He wants to stand where someone else already built.*

My hands trembled.

Because that was the sentence I had spent years refusing to believe.

The sentence that explained everything.

I read the final lines.

*I’m sorry I didn’t tell you sooner. I was afraid you wouldn’t believe me. I was afraid because I once believed him too.*

Then:

*If he ever tries to convince you that you are the reason he feels small, remember this: you were never his obstacle. You were the proof of what he could have become.*

At the bottom:

*Lucía Vega*

I lowered the paper.

Nobody spoke.

Then Teresa broke the silence.

“She’s lying.””

I looked at her.

“She wrote this years ago.””

“That doesn’t mean it’s true.””

“No.””

I nodded.

“It means she was warning me before any of this happened.””

Teresa looked at Alejandro.

“Did you know?””

He stayed silent.

That was all I needed.

I turned toward him.

“How long?””

He looked confused.

“What?””

“How long did you know she thought this about you?””

He rubbed his face.

“I don’t know.””

“Don’t lie.””

His eyes met mine.

“I knew she was angry.””

“Why?””

Silence.

Then:

“Because she found out I was leaving.””

I froze.

“What?””

Teresa looked between us.

Alejandro looked trapped.

“She found out I was moving on.””

“With me?””

He didn’t answer.

I already knew.

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Lucía wasn’t your business partner.””

He looked down.

“No.””

“She was your partner.””

A pause.

“Yes.””

The word was barely audible.

I felt something break.

Not because he had a past.

Everyone had a past.

Because he had erased it.

“You told me you had never been serious before.””

“I was scared you wouldn’t understand.””

I stared.

“Understand what?””

“That it was complicated.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“It was hidden.””

He didn’t argue.

Because he knew.

I walked toward the table and placed the letter down.

“You didn’t just hide your past.””

I pointed at the documents.

“You hid your plans.””

His voice softened.

“Mariana, I loved you.””

I looked at him.

That sentence would have destroyed me once.

Now it only made me tired.

“Maybe you did.””

He looked surprised.

“But love without honesty becomes something else.””

I picked up the letter.

“It becomes control.””

Two hours later, Daniel arrived.

I gave him everything.

The forged marriage agreement.

The ownership documents.

The messages.

The letter.

He reviewed each item carefully.

“This changes things.””

I sat across from him.

“How?””

“Because this establishes a pattern.””

Rebecca looked through the documents.

“Not just financial misconduct.””

Daniel nodded.

“Intent.””

That word mattered.

Intent.

For months, I had been trying to understand whether Alejandro had simply made mistakes.

But mistakes were accidental.

This wasn’t.

This was preparation.

This was planning.

Daniel closed the folder.

“We need to move quickly.””

“Why?””

“Because if Alejandro filed the co-founder claim today, he knows he’s exposed.””

Rebecca added:

“He may try to control the narrative before we can.””

I looked at her.

“What does that mean?””

She hesitated.

“It means he may try to make people believe he was pushed out unfairly.””

I almost smiled.

Of course.

The story.

That was always the weapon.

Not the truth.

The story people believed.

And Alejandro had always been good at telling stories.

That evening, I drove to Ruta Norte.

Not because I needed to.

Because I wanted to remember.

The building stood exactly where it had always stood.

The sign above the entrance still carried the name I created.

The company that began with two trucks.

The company that became hundreds of employees.

My company.

Inside, employees stopped when they saw me.

Some smiled.

Some looked nervous.

Then my assistant, Nina, rushed toward me.

“Mariana.””

“What happened?””

She looked around before lowering her voice.

“Alejandro was here.””

My chest tightened.

“When?””

“What did he do?””

She hesitated.

“He called a meeting.””

“With who?””

“Some executives.””

I frowned.

“He doesn’t have authority.””

“I know.””

Nina looked worried.

“But he told them you were having a personal crisis.””

My jaw tightened.

“He said what?””

“He said the company was unstable because of your decisions.””

I felt something cold settle inside me.

There it was.

The first move.

Not legal.

Emotional.

He couldn’t win with documents.

So he was going after reputation.

“What else?””

Nina looked down.

“He said you were trying to remove him because you wanted full control.””

I almost laughed.

Full control.

The woman who had spent years sharing everything was suddenly the villain because she wanted ownership of what she built.

“Did they believe him?””

Nina looked at me.

“Some did.””

That hurt.

Not because I blamed them.

Because I understood.

People believed what they saw.

And Alejandro had spent years standing beside me.

Wearing my success like it belonged to him.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From an unknown number.

I opened it.

One sentence.

One photo.

And my blood turned cold.

The photo showed me and Alejandro on our wedding day.

But the message wasn’t about the picture.

It said:

*“You’re looking in the wrong direction, Mariana. Alejandro wasn’t the one who started this plan.””*

I stared at the screen.

Then another message arrived.

*“Ask Teresa why she really wanted you gone.””*

I looked up.

Because suddenly I understood something.

Alejandro may have been the person who betrayed me.

But he might not have been the person who created the betrayal.

And if that was true…

May you like

The woman who tore my dress apart in my kitchen…

was hiding something much bigger.
