Thinking

Chapter 3: The Price of a Borrowed Crown

Alejandro stood frozen in the middle of the living room, phone pressed against his ear.

I had seen him nervous before.

I had seen him frustrated.

I had even seen him angry.

But I had never seen him afraid.

Not like this.

His fingers tightened around the phone until his knuckles turned pale.

“No, that doesn’t make sense,” he said.

A pause.

“No, I understand the policy, but I’m the vice president.””

Another pause.

His eyes moved toward the floor.

The confidence was disappearing piece by piece.

“Wait. You can’t remove me without a meeting.””

Daniel quietly looked at Rebecca.

Neither of them seemed surprised.

That was when I realized they already knew how this conversation would end.

Alejandro turned away from us.

“Who authorized this?””

Silence.

Then his face changed.

The answer had arrived.

I didn’t need to hear it.

He knew.

I knew.

Everyone in that room knew.

He lowered the phone slowly.

“They suspended me.””

Teresa immediately stepped forward.

“What?””

Alejandro looked at her.

“They suspended me from Ruta Norte.””

Her expression shifted from confusion to disbelief.

“But you’re the vice president.””

The irony almost made me smile.

Almost.

Because for years, Teresa had introduced him that way.

Not because it was his title.

Because it sounded impressive.

Because it made her feel like she was the mother of a powerful man.

But titles were just words.

The truth lived in the paperwork.

“The board approved the suspension this morning,” Rebecca explained.

Teresa turned toward her.

“Who are you?””

“Rebecca Miller. Financial director.””

“And you think you can just walk in here and accuse my son?””

Rebecca didn’t flinch.

“I’m not accusing him. I’m explaining what happened.””

Teresa looked at Alejandro.

Then at me.

And suddenly, her anger returned.

This time, it had a target.

“You did this.””

I stared at her.

“I discovered it.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You planned this.””

I almost laughed.

Because that was the easiest explanation for people who refused to accept consequences.

It was easier to believe someone was cruel than to admit someone was careless.

“You think I wanted to find out my husband was taking money from my company?””

Teresa crossed her arms.

“You always thought you were better than us.””

There it was.

The real wound.

Not the money.

Not the company.

Not the house.

Her problem was never that I had done something wrong.

Her problem was that I had something she could never claim.

Independence.

“I never thought I was better than you,” I said.

I paused.

“But I did expect you to respect me.””

She looked away.

For once, she had nothing to say.

Alejandro stepped between us.

“Can we stop attacking each other?””

I looked at him.

“Attacking?””

“Yes.””

His voice rose slightly.

“You’re acting like I destroyed everything.””

I stared.

“You changed ownership documents without telling me.””

“I was trying to protect us.””

“By moving assets?””

“It was complicated.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“It was hidden.””

The room went quiet.

Alejandro looked exhausted.

“Mariana, you don’t understand how much pressure I was under.””

That sentence.

That one sentence.

It explained so much.

Because somehow, every time Alejandro made a mistake, the conversation became about how difficult things were for him.

Never about who paid the price.

“You were under pressure?”” I asked.

“Yes.””

I nodded slowly.

“Interesting.””

“What?””

“I spent eight years building this company while taking care of everything at home.””

“That’s different.””

“Why?””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because there was no answer that wouldn’t reveal the truth.

I had carried the weight.

He had carried the image.

Daniel cleared his throat.

“We need to discuss the house situation.””

Teresa immediately reacted.

“The house is my son’s.””

Daniel looked at her.

“No.””

One word.

Simple.

Calm.

But it changed the room.

Teresa blinked.

“What did you say?””

“The house is registered under Mariana’s name.””

She laughed.

Not because she found it funny.

Because she refused to believe it.

“That’s impossible.””

“It’s not.””

Daniel opened the document.

“The property was purchased six years ago using funds from Mariana’s personal investment account.””

Teresa looked at Alejandro.

Her face was asking him to deny it.

To save her version of reality.

He couldn’t.

“You knew?”” she whispered.

Alejandro looked down.

“Mom…”

“You knew?””

Her voice became louder.

“You let me tell everyone you bought this?””

He didn’t answer.

And somehow, that was worse.

Teresa’s confidence cracked.

Just for a second.

Then she turned back to me.

“You made him look weak.””

I felt something inside me snap.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just enough.

“You think honesty makes him weak?””

Nobody spoke.

I stepped closer.

“You think a man is weak because his wife succeeds?””

Teresa’s eyes hardened.

“He’s my son.””

“Yes.””

I nodded.

“He is.””

Then I looked at Alejandro.

“But he is also my husband.””

My voice lowered.

“And husbands are supposed to stand beside their wives. Not hide behind them.””

Alejandro looked away.

That hurt.

But it no longer surprised me.

A knock came from the front door.

Everyone turned.

Another surprise.

This house had become a place where every door opened with a new disaster.

Alejandro walked toward it.

Before he reached the handle, his phone rang again.

He looked at the screen.

This time, he answered immediately.

“Hello?””

His face changed after five seconds.

“What?””

He listened.

Then he looked at me.

“Who told you that?””

A pause.

“No, I didn’t authorize that.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What happened?””

He ended the call.

Nobody moved.

“What now?”” Teresa asked.

Alejandro ran a hand through his hair.

“The company car.””

Rebecca looked up.

“What about it?””

“They’re taking it back.””

Silence.

Then Teresa shook her head.

“This is ridiculous.””

Alejandro ignored her.

“They said the lease is under Ruta Norte.””

“Yes,” I said.

He looked at me.

“I thought…”

I waited.

He stopped.

Because he knew.

He thought everything around him belonged to him.

The car.

The house.

The status.

The respect.

He thought being next to me meant owning what I built.

Daniel gathered his documents.

“Mariana, we should leave for the office.””

I nodded.

As I walked toward the door, Teresa grabbed my arm.

Not hard.

But enough to stop me.

“Mariana.””

I looked at her hand.

Then at her face.

Slowly, she let go.

“You really want to destroy your marriage over paperwork?””

The question almost made me sad.

Almost.

Because it showed she still didn’t understand.

“This isn’t about paperwork.””

“Then what is it about?””

I looked at Alejandro.

The man who had watched his mother tear my dress.

The man who had watched her insult me.

The man who had watched her claim my life belonged to him.

“It’s about the moment I realized I was the only person in this marriage who was protecting it.””

Teresa’s expression softened slightly.

Maybe she saw something in my face.

Maybe she finally understood this wasn’t revenge.

This was exhaustion.

I opened the door.

Then Alejandro spoke.

“Mariana.””

I stopped.

For a second, I hoped.

I hated that I hoped.

“What?””

His voice was quiet.

“Please don’t take everything from me.””

The sentence hung in the air.

I looked at him.

Then at Teresa.

Then at the house.

The house they had both called his.

The life they had both claimed.

“I’m not taking anything from you, Alejandro.””

I stepped outside.

“I’m just stopping you from taking what was never yours.””

I closed the door.

Outside, Daniel and Rebecca were waiting beside my car.

As I reached for the handle, my phone buzzed.

A new email.

I opened it.

The sender was the bank.

The subject line made my heart stop.

*URGENT: Unauthorized attempt to access joint accounts detected.*

I looked back at the house.

Through the window, I could see Alejandro and Teresa arguing.

They still didn’t know.

They thought the damage was already done.

They thought losing a job and a car was the worst thing waiting for them.

They had no idea someone had just tried to take the one thing they couldn’t replace.

My identity.

May you like

And whoever had made that move…

was about to reveal exactly how far they were willing to go.
