Chapter 14: The Person Behind Everything
Nobody believed me at first.
Not because they thought I was lying.
Because the message was impossible.
My grandmother was dead.
Dad took my phone.
He stared at the screen.
Then he looked at me.
“Maya…”
“I know.””
“This can’t be real.””
“I know.””
Richard stepped closer.
“Let me see.””
Dad handed him the phone.
Richard read the message.
Then his face changed.
“What?””
Dad looked at him.
“You know something.””
Richard didn’t answer.
“Richard.””
He slowly sat down.
“I thought she was dead.””
The sentence made no sense.
“What does that mean?””
Richard looked at me.
“Your grandmother wasn’t sick.””
Dad froze.
“What?””
“She disappeared.””
The room became silent.
“My family was told she passed away.””
Richard shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at the phone.
“She went into hiding.””
“Why?””
Richard looked terrified.
“Because she found out who was behind everything.””
My mother whispered:
“Who?””
Richard didn’t answer.
Then the front door opened.
Everyone turned.
Nobody had heard a key.
Nobody had heard footsteps.
A figure stood in the doorway.
An older woman.
Gray hair.
A familiar face.
My entire body stopped.
Dad whispered:
“Mom?””
My grandmother stepped inside.
Alive.
Not a ghost.
Not a message.
Alive.
Dad backed away.
“What is happening?””
She looked at him.
“I’m sorry.””
My father stared.
“You let us think you were dead.””
“I had to.””
“Had to?””
His voice broke.
“You let me grieve you.””
She looked down.
“I know.””
“No.””
Dad shook his head.
“You don’t know.””
For once, nobody had anything to say.
My grandmother looked at me.
“Maya.””
I couldn’t move.
I couldn’t speak.
The woman who had attended my childhood birthday parties.
The woman who had hugged me before every school performance.
The woman I buried in my mind.
Was standing in front of me.
“Why?””
The word barely came out.
She cried.
“Because I failed you.””
I stared.
“What?””
“I found out the truth years ago.””
“About me?””
She nodded.
“About the hospital.””
“And you did nothing?””
“I tried.””
“Then why hide?””
She looked at my father.
“Because Daniel threatened me.””
Dad’s expression changed.
“Threatened you how?””
“He knew what would happen if the truth came out.””
“What?””
My grandmother looked at me.
“He knew the person responsible would go to prison.””
Everyone froze.
“Who?””
My grandmother’s eyes moved toward my mother.
Then away.
“No.””
Mom whispered.
“No, don’t.””
Dad looked between them.
“What?””
My grandmother closed her eyes.
“The person who changed the hospital records…”
A pause.
“Was Nicole’s father.””
My mother collapsed into the chair.
“What?””
Dad looked horrified.
“My father?””
My grandmother nodded.
“He was the hospital administrator.””
I felt numb.
Another generation.
Another secret.
Another person controlling my life before I even knew it existed.
“But why?””
My grandmother looked at me.
“Because he wanted to protect his family.””
I almost laughed.
“Everyone says that.””
She looked at me sadly.
“I know.””
Dad stepped forward.
“So Daniel didn’t cause the mistake.””
“No.””
“Then why did he hide it?””
My grandmother answered:
“Because he found out later and realized he could use it.””
The room went quiet.
Daniel.
Again.
“He used the secret to control Nicole.””
My mother covered her face.
“He knew.””
“Yes.””
My grandmother looked at her.
“He knew you loved Maya.””
Mom started crying.
“And he knew you were afraid of losing her.””
I felt my chest tighten.
Daniel hadn’t created the wound.
He had just learned how to press on it.
My phone buzzed.
This time, nobody wanted to look.
But I did.
A final message from Daniel.
*You know enough now. Come meet me alone, Maya.*
Below it was an address.
And one more sentence.
*Because there is one truth only I can tell you.*
Dad saw the message.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“I need to know.””
“You’re not going.””
“But what if it answers everything?””
“Maya.””
I looked around the room.
At my father.
My mother.
My grandmother.
Richard.
All the people who had spent years deciding what I could handle.
“I spent my whole life being protected by lies.””
May you like
I picked up my jacket.
“I’m done.””
