Chapter 11: The Family Secret That Started Everything
Richard stood on the porch when Dad opened the door.
I expected anger.
I expected shouting.
Instead, my uncle looked exhausted.
Like he had been carrying a weight for years and finally couldn’t hold it anymore.
Dad didn’t invite him inside.
“What do you want?””
Richard looked past him.
At me.
Then at Mom.
“I need to tell the truth.””
Dad laughed quietly.
“That would be a first.””
Richard accepted the insult.
Because he deserved it.
“I know.””
The porch light flickered above him.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Dad stepped aside.
“Come in.””
Richard walked inside slowly.
He looked around the house.
The same house where he had eaten meals.
Celebrated birthdays.
Pretended nothing was wrong.
“I’m sorry.””
Nobody answered.
Richard looked at me.
“Maya…”
“Don’t.””
He stopped.
“I know you’re angry.””
“You don’t know anything.””
He nodded.
“You’re right.””
That surprised me.
Everyone had been defending themselves.
Richard was the first person who didn’t.
Dad crossed his arms.
“Start talking.””
Richard took a deep breath.
“The hospital mistake wasn’t random.””
My entire body went cold.
“What?””
Mom looked at him.
“Richard.””
He shook his head.
“No more secrets.””
Dad stared.
“What do you mean it wasn’t random?””
Richard looked down.
“The hospital had a records issue.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“No.””
He swallowed.
“But the mistake was covered up.””
“By who?””
Richard looked at Mom.
Then away.
“By people who were afraid of what would happen if the truth came out.””
Dad stepped closer.
“Who?””
Richard was quiet.
Then:
“Daniel.””
The room froze.
I felt sick.
Again.
Always Daniel.
Always another layer.
“How would Daniel have anything to do with a hospital mistake?””
Richard rubbed his face.
“Because Daniel worked with the hospital administration.””
Dad stared.
“He did what?””
“He was involved in medical supply contracts.””
Mom whispered:
“Richard…”
“No.””
He looked at her.
“He needs to know.””
Dad’s expression hardened.
“You knew?””
Mom shook her head.
“Not everything.””
Richard continued.
“When the hospital discovered the mix-up, Daniel was one of the people who helped handle the paperwork.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
Richard hesitated.
“Because his daughter was one of the babies.””
The room went silent.
Then Dad asked:
“And Maya?””
Richard looked at me.
“Maya was the other.””
I felt dizzy.
“So Daniel knew?””
“Yes.””
“From the beginning?””
“Yes.””
“And he never told me?””
Richard looked away.
“No.””
I laughed softly.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was too much.
“My whole life has been a secret.””
Nobody disagreed.
Dad walked toward the window.
“Why would Daniel do this?””
Richard answered quietly.
“Because he was afraid.””
“Of what?””
Richard looked at Mom.
“Of losing control.””
Mom closed her eyes.
That phrase seemed to hurt her.
“What does that mean?””
Richard looked at me.
“Daniel wanted his daughter back.””
My heart stopped.
“He wanted me?””
“No.””
Richard shook his head.
“He wanted his biological daughter.””
I swallowed.
“Who?””
Richard didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said:
“Emily’s daughter.””
Everything clicked.
The baby Daniel raised.
The child he claimed was his.
The child Emily mentioned.
My head spun.
“So where was I?””
Richard looked at me.
“You were with Marcus and Nicole.””
“And the other girl?””
“With Daniel.””
I stared.
Two babies.
Two families.
Two lives.
All because adults made decisions without us.
Dad looked at Mom.
“And you knew?””
She nodded.
“I knew enough.””
“Enough to keep quiet.””
“Yes.””
He looked devastated.
“I don’t know who you are anymore.””
Mom cried.
“I was scared.””
Dad shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at her.
“You were protecting a lie.””
Then Richard spoke again.
“There’s something else.””
Everyone turned.
He reached into his coat pocket.
And pulled out an envelope.
“I found this yesterday.””
Dad frowned.
“What is it?””
Richard handed it to me.
I looked at the handwriting.
I recognized it immediately.
Because it was mine.
Except I had never written it.
“What is this?””
Richard’s face went pale.
“It was found in Daniel’s office.””
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a single page.
A letter.
May you like
The first line made my blood freeze.
*Dear Maya, if you are reading this, then Daniel failed to keep you away from the truth.*
