Chapter 8: The Tape in the Box
Nick stared at his mother.
“Your father,” Martha repeated.
Her voice was barely audible.
“Daniel is your father.””
Nick looked down at the letter in his hand.
“Then why did Dad write that name like I was supposed to be afraid of it?””
Martha said nothing.
Laura stepped forward.
“Because Daniel wasn't the man you were told he was.””
Nick slowly lifted his head.
“Who was he?””
Laura looked at Martha.
“That depends on which part of your life you're asking about.””
Nick slammed the letter onto the desk.
“No more riddles.””
His voice echoed through the library.
“I've spent my entire life believing my father abandoned me. Tonight I found out he didn't. Then I find out my mother lied about his disappearance. Now there's a tape in a box with his name on it.””
He pointed toward Martha.
“You know something.””
Martha's eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
“Then talk.””
She closed her eyes.
“Daniel was your father.””
“I know that.””
“You don't understand.””
“Then make me understand.””
Martha looked at the old cassette.
“He was supposed to be dead.””
Silence.
My skin prickled.
Nick stared at her.
“Supposed to be?””
Laura turned sharply.
“Martha.””
“You weren't there,” Martha whispered.
“I was there.””
“You didn't see what happened.””
“I saw enough.””
Nick grabbed the cassette.
“What happened to him?””
Laura stepped toward him.
“Put it in the recorder.””
Ruth looked around the library.
“There should be one in the drawer.””
Nick opened the desk.
Under a stack of old papers, he found a small cassette player.
He inserted the tape.
The machine clicked.
Static filled the room.
Then a man's voice emerged.
Older.
Tired.
But unmistakably alive.
Nick stopped breathing.
“Nick, if you're hearing this, then I failed to come home.””
His knees almost buckled.
He grabbed the edge of the desk.
I moved closer.
The recording continued.
“I need you to know one thing before anything else. I did not abandon you.””
Nick closed his eyes.
A tear slipped down his cheek.
His father's voice continued.
“Your mother will tell you I left because I was selfish. She will say I chose money over my family. She may even tell you I was dangerous.””
A pause.
“Believe none of it.””
Martha whispered, “Turn it off.””
Nick looked at her.
“No.””
The tape continued.
“I discovered that money was being moved from Carter Holdings into accounts controlled by Martha's associates. When I confronted her, she denied everything.””
Laura looked down.
Daniel's voice became quieter.
“I found evidence that the transfers were not the beginning.””
Nick frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Ruth whispered, “Listen.””
“There had been other transfers before I became president of the company. Some dating back years.””
The tape crackled.
“I traced them to one account.””
Nick leaned toward the machine.
“The account belonged to Daniel Carter.””
He froze.
I felt my stomach drop.
“What?””
Nick looked at Ruth.
“That was Dad's name.””
Ruth nodded.
His father's voice continued.
“The account was in my name.””
Martha's face had gone expressionless.
“But I never opened it.””
Nick stared.
“Someone used Dad's identity.””
Laura whispered, “Yes.””
The recording went on.
“I confronted Martha again. She admitted she had created the account years earlier.””
Nick turned toward his mother.
“You stole his identity?””
Martha began crying.
“It wasn't supposed to be like that.””
The tape continued.
“She told me she did it to protect the company.””
Nick laughed bitterly.
“Of course.””
Daniel's voice became strained.
“She had already begun using the account to move money toward a second company controlled by a man named Richard Vale.””
Ruth looked at Laura.
Laura's face changed.
“Richard.””
Nick noticed.
“You know him?””
Laura nodded.
“He was your mother's business partner.””
Martha snapped, “He was not.””
“He was.””
“He forced me.””
“You chose him.””
“Enough!”” Nick shouted.
The tape kept playing.
“Richard Vale was not interested in the company. He was interested in access to something else.””
The recording crackled.
Nick's eyes moved to the wooden box.
“What else?””
Daniel answered the question for him.
“The trust.””
Martha sat down hard.
Daniel's voice continued.
“My mother had created an inheritance structure Martha could not access. But she could control the company if she could make the trustees believe I was financially irresponsible.””
I looked at Nick.
“That was the point of the fake account.””
He nodded.
“She was building a case against him.””
“Yes,” Laura said.
The recording continued.
“She needed me removed.””
A long pause.
“Then she found out I planned to expose her.””
The tape clicked.
For a moment there was only static.
Then Daniel spoke again.
“I made a deal with Laura.””
Laura's eyes closed.
Nick turned.
“You helped him?””
“Yes.””
“What did you do?””
“I got him out.””
“Where?””
“Canada.””
Martha whispered, “He was supposed to stay there.””
Nick looked at her.
“Supposed to?””
Martha stood.
“The people Richard worked with were dangerous.””
Laura snapped, “And you knew.””
“I wanted Daniel alive.””
“But you told Nicholas his father abandoned him.””
“I had no choice.””
“You always had a choice.””
Nick stepped between them.
“What happened after Dad left?””
Martha's silence was answer enough.
The tape continued.
“I left instructions with Laura.””
Nick stared.
“If anything happens to me, she must keep the original trust documents safe.””
Nick looked at Laura.
“You had them all these years?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn't you give them to me?””
“Because Martha would have killed for them.””
Martha's head jerked up.
“That is not true.””
Laura looked at her.
“Isn't it?””
Nick went still.
The recording resumed.
“There is one thing you must understand about your marriage.””
I felt my pulse quicken.
Daniel's voice softened.
“Your grandmother knew Martha would eventually try to control the person you loved.””
Nick reached for my hand.
“She wanted the inheritance protected from your mother. But she also knew money could destroy a marriage.””
A pause.
“So she created a final test.””
Nick frowned.
“What test?””
Daniel answered.
“She made the spouse the final trustee.””
I looked at Nick.
“Me.””
“Yes,” Laura said.
Nick squeezed my hand.
The tape continued.
“She wanted the person who loved you to decide whether the inheritance was worth keeping.””
The recording crackled.
“If your wife opens the vault willingly, with no knowledge of what it contains, the trust becomes hers to protect.””
Nick looked at me.
“But if she opens it under pressure, coercion, or financial manipulation…”
The tape clicked.
Daniel's voice became faint.
“...the trust is frozen.””
Ruth whispered, “That's why Martha wanted you to believe the haircut was a tradition.””
I looked at her.
“She wanted me humiliated.””
“She wanted you to react emotionally.””
“So she could claim I wasn't fit to manage the trust.””
Martha suddenly shouted.
“She was going to destroy everything!””
Nick turned.
“You've been manipulating this entire wedding.””
“I was trying to stop her!””
“She didn't even know about the trust!””
“I knew she would.””
“How?””
Martha said nothing.
Nick stepped closer.
“How did you know Emily would be named?””
Martha's eyes darted toward the box.
Then toward me.
“She found it.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Martha laughed bitterly.
“Your grandmother met Emily before she died.””
My heart stopped.
I looked at Ruth.
“That's impossible.””
Ruth didn't answer.
Nick stared at his mother.
“My grandmother died when I was twenty-one.””
“Yes.””
“She never met Emily.””
Martha shook her head.
“She did.””
Nick's face tightened.
“When?””
“Years before.””
I searched my memory.
There was one image from my childhood.
An old woman at a hospital fundraiser.
A gentle voice.
A hand resting on my shoulder.
A strange little silver flower pinned to my dress.
But I hadn't known her.
I had assumed she was one of my parents' friends.
I looked at the key.
Then the initials.
E.M.C.
“Wait.””
I touched the engraving.
“My grandmother knew my initials before I married Nick.””
Laura nodded slowly.
“She did.””
“How?””
Martha whispered,
“Because she chose you.””
Nick looked stunned.
“She knew Emily?””
Martha nodded.
“She knew exactly who Emily was.””
I stared at her.
“Then why did she never tell me?””
Martha laughed through her tears.
“Because she wanted you to choose Nick without knowing who he was.””
A chill ran through me.
The entire room seemed to tilt.
Nick turned toward Ruth.
“Is this true?””
Ruth nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because your grandmother believed your mother would eventually use money to separate you from the woman you loved.””
Nick looked at me.
“And she thought Emily was the one person Martha couldn't control.””
Martha whispered, “I tried.””
Nick's eyes hardened.
“You cut her hair.””
“I didn't know the key was hidden inside it.””
Laura stepped forward.
“You knew there was a key.””
Martha stared at her.
“Yes.””
“You've been looking for it for years.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Martha's lips trembled.
“Because the vault isn't the only thing it opens.””
Nick frowned.
“What else?””
Martha looked directly at me.
“The key opens a second door.””
My heart began pounding.
“Where?””
Martha shook her head.
“I never found it.””
Laura's expression changed.
“You're lying.””
“No.””
Martha looked toward the staircase.
“I searched this house for twenty years.””
Nick stepped closer.
“What is behind the second door?””
Martha hesitated.
Then she whispered,
“Your grandmother's final secret.””
Suddenly the cassette player clicked.
The tape had reached the end.
Nick pressed stop.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then we heard a metallic sound from somewhere behind the fireplace.
A lock turning.
Ruth slowly turned toward the wall.
“That isn't possible.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She pointed toward the key in my hand.
“The second door.””
The fireplace wall shifted.
A narrow panel opened.
Behind it was a dark passage.
And from somewhere deep inside came the sound of a phone ringing.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Then a man's voice called from the darkness.
“Emily?””
I froze.
Because I knew that voice.
I had heard it once before.
May you like
At my wedding.
And the person calling my name was supposed to have been dead for twenty-five years.
