Chapter 7: The Sister in the Hallway
Martha smiled at Laura.
“Hello, sister.””
Nobody moved.
Nick stared at his mother.
Then at Laura.
Then back at Martha.
“Sister?””
Laura's face had gone white.
“You told everyone I was dead.””
Martha folded her arms.
“I told them what they needed to know.””
Laura took a step forward.
“You told my own parents I died in a car accident.””
Martha's smile disappeared.
“You left.””
“You made me leave.””
Nick looked between them.
“Somebody start talking.””
Martha stepped into the library.
“You have no idea what you're doing.””
Nick shut the door behind her.
“I've heard that all night.””
“Because you keep making decisions without understanding the consequences.””
He held up the red folder.
“Then explain this.””
Martha glanced at it and immediately looked away.
Laura saw her reaction.
“You knew it was here.””
“I knew there were documents.””
“You didn't know which ones.””
Martha's eyes narrowed.
“You've been waiting years for this.””
“No,” Laura said.
“I've been waiting years for you to stop lying.””
Nick placed the folder on the desk.
“You said Dad signed this.””
“Yes.””
“Prove it.””
Martha looked at Laura.
“Ask her.””
Nick frowned.
“Why would I ask her?””
“Because she was there.””
Laura closed her eyes.
Martha continued.
“Your father signed the agreement himself.””
Nick looked at Laura.
“Did he?””
Laura didn't answer.
“Laura.””
She opened her eyes.
“Yes.””
Nick's shoulders dropped.
“Then my mother was telling the truth.””
Laura shook her head.
“About the signature.””
Nick stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
“It means your father signed a document.””
She pointed at the red folder.
“But not that one.””
Martha's face tightened.
“Don't.””
Laura ignored her.
“Your father signed the original agreement. Martha replaced it later.””
Nick looked at the document again.
“You said my father signed it.””
Martha took a sharp breath.
“He signed something.””
“What?””
“A draft.””
Laura laughed bitterly.
“A draft that gave Martha temporary control of the company, not ownership of your marriage.””
Nick's eyes hardened.
“So you changed it.””
Martha said nothing.
“You changed my father's document.””
“I had to.””
“For what?””
“To save everything.””
“No,” Laura said.
“To save yourself.””
Martha turned toward her.
“You always hated me.””
Laura's voice cracked.
“I loved you.””
That sentence silenced the room.
I looked at Ruth.
She was staring at the two women as though she had seen this argument in another lifetime.
Laura continued.
“You were my sister. I trusted you. I helped you when you had nothing.””
“And you thought that made you better than me.””
“I thought you were better than this.””
Martha looked away.
Nick stood between them.
“Why did you tell people Laura was dead?””
Martha's silence lasted too long.
Then she whispered,
“Because she knew.””
“Knew what?””
“Everything.””
Nick's jaw tightened.
“That's not an answer.””
Laura took the red folder and opened it.
“Your father discovered the transfers.””
She pulled out a bank statement.
“He confronted Martha.””
Another paper.
“He hired lawyers.””
Another.
“He prepared to expose her.””
Nick's eyes moved across the documents.
“And then?””
Martha answered.
“Then he made a choice.””
“What choice?””
“He left.””
Laura shook her head.
“He ran because Martha threatened to accuse him of fraud.””
Martha snapped, “Because he had committed fraud.””
“No,” Laura said.
“You forged his signature.””
I felt my stomach twist.
Nick looked stunned.
“You forged Dad's signature?””
Martha's eyes filled with tears.
“I signed one paper.””
“One?””
“That paper was never supposed to become this.””
“You destroyed his life.””
“I was trying to save the company!””
“You destroyed my childhood.””
Martha's face crumpled.
“I was your mother.””
“You lied about my father.””
“I thought I was protecting you.””
“By telling me he abandoned me?””
Her voice broke.
“He was going to take you away.””
Nick went still.
“Could he?””
Martha didn't answer.
Laura did.
“Yes.””
Nick stared at her.
“Legally?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because your father had evidence of Martha's financial crimes.””
Laura pulled out another file.
“And because your grandmother was ready to remove Martha from the company.””
Nick sat down heavily.
I put a hand on his shoulder.
He covered it with his.
“I don't know who my parents were anymore,” he whispered.
“You know who you are,” I said.
He looked at me.
I could see how much he needed those words.
Martha watched us.
Something in her expression softened.
Then hardened again.
“Don't.””
I turned toward her.
“What?””
“Don't pretend you're different from me.””
I stared.
“What does that mean?””
“You married him.””
“Yes.””
“For love?””
“Yes.””
She laughed.
“You think love survives when money enters the room?””
Nick stood.
“Enough.””
Martha looked at him.
“She wants the trust.””
I felt my face burn.
“I didn't even know it existed.””
“Convenient.””
Nick stepped between us.
“Stop.””
Martha looked at him.
“You think she loves you because she stayed when you had nothing.””
“She did.””
“You were never nothing.””
“She didn't know that.””
Martha's eyes flickered.
That was the first moment she looked genuinely afraid.
Laura noticed.
“You're too late.””
Martha turned sharply.
“Too late for what?””
“The conditions have already been triggered.””
Nick frowned.
“What conditions?””
Laura took out a final document.
“This is the activation certificate.””
Martha rushed toward her.
“No.””
Nick caught his mother's arm.
“Let her finish.””
Laura handed him the paper.
“It was filed electronically tonight.””
Nick read.
Then looked up.
“Tonight?””
“Yes.””
“After the haircut?””
“Yes.””
Martha began shaking.
“What happens now?””
Laura looked at her.
“The trust transfers.””
“To Nick?””
“To Emily.””
I felt the room tilt.
“What?””
Laura nodded.
“The entire protected estate becomes jointly controlled by Nicholas and his spouse. Martha has no authority.””
Martha stared at me.
“No.””
Nick looked at the document.
“Jointly?””
“Yes.””
“Can my mother challenge it?””
“Not unless she proves fraud.””
Martha suddenly looked at the red folder.
Her expression changed.
“She can prove fraud.””
Laura's face tightened.
“What?””
Martha pointed at the document with my supposed signature.
“You said the document was forged.””
“It was.””
“But if the court sees it…”
“They will see it was planted.””
“Not if the original is gone.””
Nick's eyes narrowed.
“What original?””
Martha smiled.
For the first time all night, she looked confident again.
“The original agreement.””
Laura froze.
Nick slowly turned toward her.
“You don't have it.””
Laura shook her head.
“No.””
Martha laughed softly.
“Exactly.””
I looked between them.
“Where is it?””
Martha's smile widened.
“Somewhere your grandmother never thought you'd find.””
Nick stepped closer.
“Where?””
Martha shook her head.
“You'll never get it.””
Ruth suddenly spoke.
“I know where it is.””
Everyone turned.
Martha's smile disappeared.
Ruth walked toward the fireplace.
“Your grandmother didn't trust banks.””
Nick looked confused.
“She kept important papers here.””
Ruth nodded.
“But not in the vault.””
She touched the stone beneath the mantel.
“There's another hiding place.””
Martha's face drained of color.
“Ruth.””
Ruth pressed her palm against the wall.
A hidden panel clicked.
Martha screamed.
“No!””
The panel opened.
Inside was a narrow compartment.
A single black box sat within it.
Nick reached for the box.
Martha lunged.
“Don't open that!””
Nick held it out of her reach.
“Why?””
She stopped.
Her chest rose and fell rapidly.
“Because that's the proof.””
I felt my heartbeat quicken.
“What proof?””
Martha looked at me.
“Of what your father did.””
Nick opened the box.
Inside was a cassette tape, three photographs, and one sealed envelope.
The envelope was addressed to Nick.
He stared at it.
“Dad's handwriting.””
Laura whispered, “Yes.””
Nick opened it.
The first line read:
*Nicholas, if you're reading this, Martha has finally failed.*
Nick's hand began to shake.
He read the next sentence.
Then stopped.
“What's wrong?”” I asked.
He looked at me.
His eyes were full of tears.
“Dad says he didn't leave me.””
I reached for his hand.
He turned the page.
His voice broke as he read aloud.
“I left because I discovered who Martha was meeting in secret.””
Laura covered her mouth.
Nick kept reading.
“His name is Daniel.””
Martha whispered,
“No.””
Nick looked up.
“Who is Daniel?””
Martha backed toward the door.
Nobody answered.
May you like
Then she said the words that changed everything.
“Your father.””
