Chapter 7: The Baby They Stole
“I’m Sophie.””
The woman standing in my father’s nursery looked nothing like the sister I had imagined.
She wasn't the little girl from Rachel's photograph.
She wasn't a stranger with a mysterious bracelet.
She was a woman with rain-soaked hair, trembling hands, and tears running down her cheeks.
And somehow, when she said my name, something inside me recognized her before my mind did.
Then she said the words that made my stomach turn cold.
“Lily wasn't conceived the way you think.””
I stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
Sophie looked at Rachel.
“Is she safe?””
Rachel stepped between us.
“Who are you really?””
“I already told you.””
“You'll have to do better than that.””
Sophie reached into her coat again.
She pulled out a driver's license and placed it on the nursery dresser.
*Claire Mercer.*
The photograph matched her face.
I looked at the license.
Then at her.
“Claire?””
She nodded.
“That was the name I was given.””
“Sophie.””
“My birth name.””
My hands instinctively covered my belly.
“What do you mean Lily wasn't conceived the way I think?””
Claire closed her eyes.
“Because Cole isn't telling you everything.””
My heart slammed against my ribs.
“About the affair?””
“More than that.””
Rachel crossed her arms.
“Start talking.””
Claire glanced toward the hallway.
“We don't have much time.””
“Why?””
“Because Darla knows I'm here.””
I stared.
“My mother?””
“She knew I would eventually find you.””
“Then why hasn't she contacted you?””
“Because she was afraid of what I'd ask.””
I stepped closer.
“What did you ask?””
Claire looked directly at me.
“Why she gave one baby away and kept the other.””
My breath caught.
“What?””
“She told everyone you were the surviving twin.””
“She told me I was an only child.””
“She changed your record.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
Claire pulled out a second document.
“Read it.””
I didn't want to.
But I did.
The hospital record showed two female infants delivered thirty years ago.
*Twin A: Female. Stable.*
*Twin B: Female. Critical.*
Then, six hours later, the record changed.
*Twin A: Emma Bennett — transferred to private care.*
*Twin B: Sophie Bennett — deceased.*
I stared at the names.
My name wasn't Emma Carter.
It was Emma Bennett.
The room seemed to sway.
“Who changed this?””
Claire swallowed.
“Your mother.””
“Why?””
“She said Victor Hale made her choose.””
“Choose what?””
“Which child would live under your father's name.””
I looked at her.
“That makes no sense.””
“It did to them.””
“To who?””
“Darla. Your father. Victor.””
Rachel looked between us.
“Okay. I need someone to explain why three adults were deciding which newborn got which identity.””
Claire's eyes hardened.
“Because one of the babies wasn't Victor Hale's.””
Silence.
My fingers tightened around the paper.
“Mine?””
Claire shook her head.
“No.””
“Sophie?””
“No.””
“Then whose?””
She looked at me.
“Daniel Mercer's.””
I couldn't breathe.
“Daniel?””
“Your mother's half-brother.””
“I thought Victor was Daniel's father.””
“He was the man who claimed him.””
My mind raced through everything Cole had told me.
Daniel.
Victor.
My father.
The secret baby.
The missing sister.
None of the pieces stayed where I'd put them.
Claire continued.
“Victor wasn't Daniel's biological father. He adopted him after your maternal grandfather disappeared.””
“Why?””
“Because Victor wanted control over the family.””
“What family?””
“Yours.””
I looked down at the hospital document.
“Then what does Lily have to do with it?””
Claire hesitated.
That hesitation scared me more than anything she had said.
“Lily's DNA was tested.””
“By whom?””
“Your mother.””
“Why?””
“To compare her with yours.””
I shook my head.
“My mother did a DNA test on my unborn baby?””
“After you were eight weeks pregnant.””
“And what did she find?””
Claire's eyes filled.
“She found that Lily is related to Daniel.””
I felt the room go silent.
“That's impossible.””
“No.””
“You're saying my baby is related to Daniel?””
“Very closely.””
“How?””
“I don't know yet.””
Rachel looked at me.
“Emma, maybe she means there was a contamination issue.””
Claire shook her head.
“No.””
“How do you know?””
“Because I saw the report.””
“Where?””
“Darla kept it in the same file as the paternity test.””
My heart pounded.
“Did you bring it?””
Claire nodded.
She pulled out another folded sheet.
My fingers hesitated before taking it.
The top read:
*PRENATAL GENETIC RELATIONSHIP ANALYSIS*
Mother: Emma Carter.
Fetal Sample: Lily Carter.
Reference Subject: Daniel Mercer.
The result was stamped in red.
*PATERNAL RELATIONSHIP CANNOT BE EXCLUDED.*
I stared.
“No.””
Claire whispered, “I'm sorry.””
“No.””
I read it again.
The words didn't change.
Rachel snatched the paper from my hand.
“What exactly does this mean?””
Claire looked at her.
“It means Daniel's DNA matches the baby through the father’s biological line.””
Rachel frowned.
“But Daniel is Emma's uncle.””
Claire shook her head.
“Not by blood.””
Rachel went silent.
I felt my knees weaken.
“If Daniel is not my mother's brother…”
“He's your biological father.””
The words didn't make sense.
My brain rejected them.
My mother.
Daniel.
Me.
My baby.
“No.””
Claire stepped closer.
“I didn't want to tell you like this.””
“You're lying.””
“I'm not.””
“My father is Richard.””
“Richard raised you.””
“That isn't what I said.””
Claire's voice softened.
“He loved you.””
“Then why are you telling me he wasn't my father?””
“Because someone tried to erase the truth.””
My hand pressed against my stomach.
The baby moved.
Hard.
I closed my eyes.
“No.””
Rachel came beside me.
“Sit down.””
I didn't.
I couldn't.
I looked at Claire.
“You said Lily is related to Daniel.””
“Yes.””
“Because Daniel is…”
She nodded.
“Your biological father.””
The room tilted.
My mind went immediately to Cole.
The affair.
The six months.
The paternity test.
The secrets.
I whispered, “Cole knew.””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“Because Daniel told him.””
“When?””
“Before your wedding.””
I looked at Rachel.
She was staring at me.
“Before we got married?””
Claire nodded.
“Cole knew who Daniel was.””
I turned toward the door.
“I need to leave.””
Rachel grabbed my arm.
“Emma—”
“I need to get home.””
“No.””
I looked at her.
“I need my medical records.””
Claire shook her head.
“Don't go back yet.””
“Why?””
“Because Cole isn't at your house.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“He left.””
“When?””
“Twenty minutes ago.””
“How do you know?””
“I've been watching him.””
Rachel's eyes narrowed.
“You've been watching my friend’s husband?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because he has something that belongs to me.””
“What?””
Claire looked at me.
“A recording.””
My pulse quickened.
“What recording?””
“The night your father died.””
Everything stopped.
“You have it?””
“No.””
“Cole does.””
“Where?””
“I don't know.””
Claire's voice broke.
“But someone else does.””
The hallway floor creaked.
All three of us froze.
A man's voice came from downstairs.
“Emma?””
Cole.
Rachel immediately grabbed my hand.
“How did he find us?””
Claire looked terrified.
“I told you.””
“What?””
“Darla knew I was coming.””
Footsteps moved across the first floor.
Cole called again.
“Emma, please come downstairs.””
I stared at Claire.
“Did you bring him here?””
“No.””
“Then how did he know?””
Claire's eyes filled with fear.
“He put a tracker in your car.””
I remembered.
The night before.
Cole touching my wrist.
The black sedan.
The messages.
My stomach dropped.
“You're sure?””
She nodded.
“I saw him install it three days ago.””
Rachel whispered, “That psychopath.””
Cole's footsteps reached the stairs.
“We need another way out,” Rachel said.
I looked around the nursery.
There had been a closet behind the old wardrobe.
I remembered hiding there as a child.
I pulled the wardrobe door open.
Behind it was a narrow doorway.
Rachel stared.
“Is that a secret passage?””
“My father built it.””
Claire gave a stunned laugh.
“Of course he did.””
We squeezed through.
The passage smelled of dust and damp wood.
I held the hospital papers against my chest.
Claire came behind me.
Rachel closed the door.
Above us, the nursery door opened.
Cole's voice echoed.
“Emma?””
He sounded calm.
Too calm.
Rachel whispered, “He's here.””
We moved through the passage.
At the end was another door leading outside.
I pushed it open.
Cold rain hit my face.
We stepped into the trees.
I turned back toward the old house.
A light switched on in the nursery.
Cole stood at the window.
He saw us.
He lifted his phone.
Then mine buzzed.
A message from him.
*You found Sophie.*
Another appeared.
*Good.*
Then a final one.
*Now ask her why she killed your father.*
I stared at Claire.
She had gone completely white.
Rachel looked at her.
“Emma…”
Claire whispered,
“He lied.””
“About what?””
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
“I didn't kill your father.””
She swallowed.
“But I was with him the night he died.””
May you like
Then she looked toward the house.
“And I know who did.””
