Chapter 10: The Truth They Buried

For three seconds, nobody moved.

The hospital hallway seemed to disappear.

The machines.

The footsteps.

The distant voices of nurses calling patients' names.

Everything faded behind one sentence.

*“The real Lily was born two days ago.””*

My eyes stayed on my mother.

Then slowly moved to the syringe in her hand.

Then to Cole.

He looked like a stranger.

Not because I didn't recognize him.

Because I finally did.

“Darla,” I whispered.

My mother flinched.

“Emma…”

“Where is my baby?””

Tears rolled down her face.

“She isn't your baby.””

The words cut deeper than anything else she had said.

I stepped forward.

“You don't get to say that.””

“Please listen.””

“No.””

My voice echoed through the hallway.

The nurse holding the newborn stepped back.

Claire moved beside me.

“Emma, don't let her control this.””

Darla looked at Claire.

“You don't understand.””

Claire laughed bitterly.

“I understand more than anyone.””

“No.””

My mother's voice cracked.

“You understand the records. You understand the lies. But you don't understand why.””

“Then explain.””

Darla looked at the baby in the bassinet.

“She was never supposed to be found.””

The baby cried louder.

My chest tightened.

“Who?””

Darla closed her eyes.

“Lily.””

My breath caught.

“You mean the baby?””

She nodded.

“The original Lily.””

Claire went pale.

“The baby from thirty years ago?””

Darla nodded.

“No.””

Silence.

“What?””

My mother looked at me.

“The baby from thirty years ago wasn't the only Lily.””

I felt dizzy.

“What does that mean?””

Cole finally spoke.

“Emma…”

I turned toward him.

His voice died immediately.

“Don't.””

He looked down.

I had never seen Cole afraid of me before.

“Tell me.””

He swallowed.

“I don't know everything.””

“Funny.””

My voice trembled.

“Everyone knows everything except me.””

Darla stepped closer.

“I wanted to protect you.””

I stared at her.

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it's true.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You protected yourself.””

Her face broke.

“I made mistakes.””

“You destroyed my life.””

“I know.””

“You slept with my husband.””

She closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

“You hid my sister.””

“Yes.””

“You lied about my father.””

“Yes.””

I pointed toward the baby.

“And now you brought a newborn into this hospital with my name attached to her.””

Darla whispered,

“I was trying to fix it.””

“By doing what?””

She looked at the syringe.

My blood went cold.

“What is that?””

Nobody answered.

“Mom.””

Her hand started shaking.

“It was supposed to help.””

“Help who?””

She looked at me.

“The baby.””

Claire stepped forward.

“That's a sedative.””

Darla's eyes widened.

“How do you know?””

“Because I worked here.””

The hallway went silent.

Rachel moved between us.

“Someone explain what is happening before I call the police myself.””

A nurse suddenly appeared at the end of the hallway.

“Security is on the way.””

Everyone froze.

Darla looked toward the elevator.

“No.””

“What?””

“They can't see me.””

She turned to run.

I grabbed her arm.

“Why?””

She looked back at me.

For the first time all night, my mother looked like a frightened child.

“Because if they find me, they'll find him.””

“Who?””

Her lips trembled.

“Victor.””

I stared.

“Victor Hale is dead.””

“No.””

Her whisper was barely audible.

“He isn't.””

The hallway went silent.

Claire grabbed my shoulder.

“Emma.””

My phone buzzed.

A message.

Unknown number.

*She finally told you.*

My hands shook.

Another message appeared.

*Your mother was never the mastermind.*

Then:

*Ask Cole where the body is.*

I slowly turned toward him.

Cole looked at my phone.

Then away.

My heart sank.

“Cole.””

He didn't answer.

“Where is the body?””

Rachel looked confused.

“What body?””

I stared at him.

“My father's.””

Cole closed his eyes.

“I don't know.””

“Don't lie.””

“I’m not.””

“Then why did someone tell me to ask you?””

His silence was enough.

I stepped closer.

“You were there.””

His face changed.

“What?””

Claire whispered.

“You were there the night Richard died.””

Cole looked at her.

“How do you know?””

“Because Daniel told me.””

My stomach dropped.

“You knew Daniel?””

“Yes.””

“And you knew about my father.””

“Yes.””

“And you knew about me.””

“Yes.””

Every answer hurt more.

“Why?””

Cole looked at me.

“Because your father asked me to protect you.””

I laughed.

A broken sound.

“You keep saying that.””

“I failed.””

“Yes.””

He looked at the floor.

“I failed the day I fell for her.””

He looked at Darla.

My mother looked away.

“I should have told you.””

“Why didn't you?””

“Because your father was right.””

“About what?””

“That the truth would destroy you.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Cole stepped closer.

“Emma, your father didn't die because he found out about Sophie.””

“Then why?””

“He died because he found out about Lily.””

I froze.

“What Lily?””

“The baby.””

I looked at the newborn.

Cole shook his head.

“Not her.””

He pointed toward the bassinet.

“Not the baby here.””

My heart pounded.

“The real Lily.””

Claire whispered,

“Where is she?””

Cole looked toward the morgue entrance.

And I knew.

Before he spoke.

“She never made it home.””

My legs almost collapsed.

“No.””

Cole's voice broke.

“Richard found out that someone had replaced the birth records.””

“With what?””

“With a dead infant.””

The room went silent.

My mother's face crumpled.

“He tried to expose them.””

“Who?””

Cole looked at Darla.

“Her.””

My mother started crying.

“No.””

“You knew.””

“I was scared.””

“You helped them.””

“I was trying to save Emma.””

“By letting another child die?””

Darla covered her mouth.

“I thought she was already gone.””

Claire stared.

“Who told you?””

Darla whispered,

“Victor.””

A cold silence fell.

Then the elevator doors opened.

A man stepped out.

Older.

Gray hair.

A calm expression.

Everyone froze.

Darla whispered,

“No.””

The man looked at me.

Not at Cole.

Not at Claire.

At me.

“Emma.””

My blood ran cold.

I knew that voice.

Not from memory.

From the messages.

The voice on the phone.

Victor Hale.

Impossible.

“You're dead.””

He smiled slightly.

“That's what everyone needed to believe.””

Security alarms began sounding.

Victor ignored them.

He walked closer.

“I've waited thirty years to meet you.””

Claire stepped in front of me.

“You ruined our lives.””

Victor looked at her.

“No.””

He smiled sadly.

“Your family did that.””

“You stole children.””

“I protected my bloodline.””

“You murdered my father.””

Victor's expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“He was going to destroy everything.””

My stomach turned.

“You killed him.””

He looked at me.

“Your father killed himself trying to expose something he didn't understand.””

“Liar.””

Victor sighed.

“You always were stubborn.””

The way he said it made me freeze.

Not angry.

Familiar.

Like he had known me my whole life.

I backed away.

“Why do you know me?””

He looked at the newborn.

Then back at me.

“Because I know what you are.””

“What?””

“The last piece of a family that should have ended decades ago.””

Claire shook her head.

“You're not her father.””

Victor smiled.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“But I know who is.””

My phone rang.

This time, the caller ID appeared.

No unknown number.

No hidden identity.

A name.

*Daniel Mercer.*

Victor looked at the phone.

His expression changed.

“Don't answer.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

“Because he will tell you the truth.””

“Isn't that what I want?””

Victor's face hardened.

“No.””

The phone kept ringing.

Everyone watched.

My mother.

Cole.

Claire.

Victor.

I answered.

“Daniel?””

A man's breathing came through the speaker.

Then a broken voice.

“Emma.””

I closed my eyes.

“Where are you?””

A pause.

Then:

“I’m sorry.””

My heart sank.

“Sorry for what?””

Daniel whispered,

“For not telling you sooner.””

Victor stepped forward.

“Hang up.””

I ignored him.

“Tell me.””

Daniel's voice cracked.

“Your father didn't die because he found out about the baby.””

I looked at Victor.

“Then why?””

Silence.

Then:

“Because he found out you were never Richard Carter's daughter.””

My stomach dropped.

I looked at my mother.

At Cole.

At Claire.

Everything stopped.

Daniel continued.

“Emma…”

His voice broke.

“You are my daughter.””

The hallway went completely silent.

Victor's face changed.

For the first time.

Fear.

Daniel whispered,

“And Lily…”

I gripped the phone.

“What about Lily?””

A long pause.

Then the truth I had spent the entire night chasing finally arrived.

“She is your daughter.””

I looked at the newborn.

The tiny bracelet.

The gray eyes.

The impossible DNA.

Daniel continued:

“The baby in that room isn't Lily.””

My breath caught.

“Then who is she?””

Daniel whispered,

“The child Victor stole.””

The baby cried.

Victor took one step forward.

Security rushed into the hallway.

And my mother fell to her knees.

Because after thirty years of lies…

the truth was finally standing in front of us.

Not as a secret.

Not as a report.

Not as a message.

But as a child.

A child who had been stolen.

A child who had been hidden.

A child who had waited her entire life for someone to say her name.

The nurse looked down at the newborn's bracelet.

Then slowly removed it.

Beneath the fake label was another one.

A faded hospital tag.

One that had been covered for decades.

She read it aloud.

“Baby Carter.””

She looked confused.

Then she read the name written underneath.

“Lily.””

I looked at Victor.

And for the first time all night, I understood.

Everyone had been searching for the wrong baby.

Everyone had been protecting the wrong secret.

The child they thought they lost…

was never gone.

She had been waiting.

May you like

And now, after thirty years,

she was finally home.
