Chapter 8: The Secret Inside the Envelope

I didn’t open the envelope immediately.

That surprised Daniel.

Maybe he expected curiosity to win.

Maybe he expected me to tear it open the second he placed it in front of me.

But after everything that had happened, I had learned something important.

Information could be a weapon.

And I was done letting other people decide when and how I received the truth.

“What is this?”” I asked.

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“Documents.””

“From where?””

He hesitated.

“From Linda.””

My fingers froze on the envelope.

“You stole them?””

“No.””

“Then how did you get them?””

Daniel looked down.

“She showed them to me.””

My stomach tightened.

“She showed you?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He swallowed.

“Because she wanted me to believe I had something to gain by helping her.””

I stared at him.

“Helping her destroy my marriage?””

He looked ashamed.

“At first, yes.””

The honesty hurt.

But I appreciated it more than another excuse.

“At first?””

Daniel nodded.

“I thought she just wanted information.””

“And then?””

“Then I realized she wasn’t trying to expose you.””

He looked directly at me.

“She was trying to control everyone around you.””

I said nothing.

Because I already knew.

But hearing it from someone else made it feel different.

Daniel pushed the envelope closer.

“Open it.””

I looked at him.

“Why should I trust you?””

“You shouldn’t.””

That answer surprised me.

He continued.

“I’m not asking you to trust me. I’m asking you to look at the evidence.””

For a moment, I saw the person Daniel used to be.

The person who could admit mistakes.

The person I thought I loved.

Then I remembered the pain.

The lies.

The betrayal.

People could change.

But that didn’t mean they deserved automatic forgiveness.

I opened the envelope.

Inside were copies of emails.

Messages.

And one document that made my breath catch.

A medical form.

I looked at Daniel.

“What is this?””

“Read it.””

My hands trembled slightly as I scanned the page.

It was a request.

A request for information from a prenatal clinic.

But the name requesting it wasn’t mine.

It wasn’t Ethan’s.

It was Linda’s.

My heart started pounding.

“How did she get access to this?””

Daniel shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

“She can’t just request my medical information.””

“She knew someone there.””

I looked back at the paper.

The date was three months earlier.

Before the nursery argument.

Before the suitcase.

Before everything exploded.

Linda had been investigating my pregnancy long before she threw me out.

“Why?””

Daniel looked away.

“Because she believed something happened before you and Ethan met.””

I felt a cold wave move through me.

“Something with you?””

He nodded.

I waited.

“Years ago, when we were together, there was a pregnancy scare.””

The world seemed to pause.

I stared at him.

“What?””

“I know.””

“No.””

My voice became sharper.

“You never told me that.””

“I was ashamed.””

“You don’t get to say that.””

“I know.””

My anger rose.

“You lied to me too.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

The fact that he accepted it made me even more frustrated.

Because I wanted someone to fight back.

I wanted someone to explain.

But everyone kept admitting they had hurt me after they had already done it.

“What happened?”” I asked.

Daniel took a breath.

“We thought I might have gotten you pregnant.””

My fingers tightened around the papers.

“And?””

“It turned out you weren’t.””

I stared at him.

“Then why does Linda care?””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Because she doesn’t know that.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“She found old information about that time. She found records showing we thought there was a possibility.””

“But there was no baby.””

“No.””

“Then what does this have to do with my daughter?””

Daniel looked at me.

“That’s the part I don’t understand.””

I looked back at the papers.

Something felt wrong.

Very wrong.

Linda wasn’t careless.

She didn’t make accusations without a reason.

“She thinks Ethan isn’t the father because of that?””

Daniel nodded.

“She thinks your daughter could be mine.””

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was impossible.

“Daniel, we haven’t spoken in years.””

“I know.””

“I met Ethan after we ended.””

“I know.””

“Then how could she believe that?””

Daniel was quiet.

And that silence terrified me.

“What?””

He looked at the table.

“Because she has another piece of information.””

“What information?””

He hesitated.

“She has a DNA test.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Linda showed me a copy.””

I felt dizzy.

“No.””

“She claims she had one done.””

“That’s impossible.””

“I thought so too.””

“Ethan and I never did a DNA test.””

Daniel nodded.

“That’s why I don’t understand.””

My mind raced.

A DNA test required samples.

Consent.

A process.

Unless…

I stood suddenly.

“Where is the copy?””

Daniel looked surprised.

“She didn’t give it to me.””

“Then how do you know?””

“Because she showed it to me.””

“Showed you what?””

“The result page.””

I grabbed my bag.

“I need to go.””

“Emily—”

But I was already walking away.

Because suddenly, there was one person who needed to answer questions.

And I didn’t care if she was Ethan’s mother.

I didn’t care if she had spent years manipulating him.

I needed the truth.

I didn’t tell Ethan where I was going.

Maybe that was unfair.

Maybe it was exactly the kind of secrecy I hated.

But I needed one conversation where nobody could interrupt.

Nobody could explain.

Nobody could soften the truth.

I drove straight to Linda’s house.

She opened the door after the second knock.

And the moment she saw me, she smiled.

Not surprised.

Not confused.

Prepared.

That was when I knew.

She had been waiting.

“Emily.””

I stepped inside.

“Where is it?””

Her smile faded slightly.

“Where is what?””

“The DNA test.””

The silence lasted less than a second.

But it was enough.

Enough to prove she knew exactly what I was talking about.

“You talked to Daniel.””

I stared at her.

“That’s not an answer.””

She closed the door.

“I knew he would eventually tell you.””

My heart pounded.

“You set this up.””

“No.””

“You contacted my ex.””

“I looked for answers.””

“You invaded my privacy.””

“I protected my family.””

I almost couldn’t believe those words.

“Your family?””

“Yes.””

She walked toward the living room.

“Ethan deserves the truth.””

I followed.

“You don’t care about truth.””

She stopped.

“You think I’m the villain.””

“I think you’ve spent years trying to control my marriage.””

Her expression hardened.

“You came into Ethan’s life and changed everything.””

There it was.

The truth.

Not the house.

Not the baby.

Me.

“You don’t like that he chose me.””

“He was different before you.””

I stared at her.

“Different how?””

“He listened.””

The answer was so honest it shocked me.

Linda truly believed obedience was love.

“He respected me.””

“No,” I said quietly.

“He feared disappointing you.””

Her face changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

I had finally touched the real wound.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

“I know exactly what I’m talking about.””

I stepped closer.

“You wanted a son who needed you forever.””

Her voice became colder.

“And you wanted a husband who would abandon his family for you.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I pointed toward the door.

“I wanted a husband who would build a family with me.””

Silence.

Then I asked:

“Where is the DNA test?””

Linda didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

“Linda.””

“You don’t understand what I’m protecting.””

“What are you protecting?””

She looked at my stomach.

And something about her expression made me uncomfortable.

Not anger.

Fear.

“You think Ethan is the only person who could lose everything?””

My heart slowed.

“What does that mean?””

She walked to a drawer.

Pulled something out.

A small envelope.

My breathing stopped.

Because I recognized it.

The same type of envelope Daniel had given me.

She placed it on the table.

“You want the truth?””

I stared at it.

“Yes.””

She smiled sadly.

“Then you should know something.””

I didn’t move.

“What?””

She pushed the envelope toward me.

“I never wanted you out because of the nursery.””

My fingers hovered over the paper.

“Then why?””

Her eyes met mine.

“Because if Ethan found out what happened the night before you met him…”

I froze.

“What happened?””

Linda’s voice dropped.

“Your entire marriage would fall apart.””

I opened my mouth.

Nothing came out.

Then she said the one sentence I never expected.

“The man you thought disappeared from your life didn’t disappear by accident.””

My blood went cold.

“Daniel?””

She nodded.

“He was removed.””

“By who?””

Linda looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw something I had never seen in her before.

Fear.

“By someone who wanted you to marry Ethan.””

I stared at her.

“Who?””

She didn’t answer.

Instead, she pushed the envelope closer.

“Open it.””

My hand moved slowly.

I lifted the flap.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph of Daniel.

Standing beside someone I knew.

Someone who had been part of my life every day for six years.

Someone who had sworn he barely knew Daniel.

I looked at the picture.

May you like

And my entire world tilted.

Because standing next to Daniel was Ethan.
