Chapter 7: The Truth Behind Daniel’s Return
I stared at the photo on Ethan’s phone until the words stopped looking like words.
*Ask your wife why she never told you the truth about what happened before she met you.*
It was such a simple sentence.
Almost harmless.
But I knew Linda.
I knew the way she chose her words.
She didn’t need to accuse someone directly.
She preferred leaving a door open and letting people’s imagination do the damage.
And right now, Ethan was standing in front of me with years of trust between us, holding a message designed to make him question everything.
“Emily,” he said quietly.
I looked up.
“Where did she get this?””
“I don’t know.””
“No.””
My voice was sharper than I intended.
“You do know something.””
He looked confused.
“What?””
“Linda doesn’t randomly find people.””
He said nothing.
“She doesn’t accidentally uncover information.””
I handed his phone back.
“She looks for weaknesses.””
Ethan stared at the screen.
“I don’t know what she thinks she found.””
That was the first thing he had said that sounded completely honest.
I sat down.
Not because I was weak.
Because suddenly my body felt heavy.
Thirty-two weeks pregnant.
Exhausted.
Stressed.
And now somehow, I was being dragged back into a part of my life I had buried years ago.
A part I never expected to explain again.
“Daniel was before you,” I said.
Ethan nodded.
“I know.””
“No. You know his name.””
He looked at me.
“You don’t know the story.””
A quiet silence filled the room.
My parents were still nearby, but neither of them interrupted.
They knew me well enough to understand that this was something I needed to say myself.
“Daniel was my boyfriend in college,” I continued.
Ethan sat across from me.
“I knew you dated someone before me.””
“That’s not the point.””
“Then what is?””
I looked at my hands.
“The point is that Daniel is not a secret.””
Ethan’s expression softened slightly.
“Then why didn’t you tell me everything?””
I looked at him.
Because that was the question, wasn’t it?
The question Linda wanted him to ask.
Not because she cared about honesty.
Because she wanted him to believe there was something hidden.
“There are things people don’t talk about because they’re ashamed,” I said.
His face changed.
“Were you ashamed of me?””
“No.””
“Then what?””
I took a deep breath.
“Of who I was back then.””
Ethan stayed quiet.
And for once, he let me speak.
“Daniel and I were together for almost three years.””
“I knew that.””
“He was my first serious relationship.””
I looked away.
“We thought we were going to get married.””
Ethan’s jaw tightened slightly.
Not anger.
Pain.
I noticed.
But I continued.
“Then I found out he had been lying to me.””
“About what?””
“Money.””
I paused.
“And other things.””
The memories came back quickly.
The apartment.
The arguments.
The promises.
The way I kept believing every apology because I wanted the relationship to be real.
“Daniel wasn’t who I thought he was.””
Ethan looked at me.
“What did he do?””
“He took money from me.””
His expression hardened.
“How much?””
“Enough that it hurt.””
I shook my head.
“But that wasn’t the worst part.””
“What was?””
I swallowed.
“The worst part was that when I confronted him, he told me I should have known better.””
Ethan’s eyes narrowed.
“He blamed you?””
“Yes.””
The room became quiet.
“And that’s when I left.””
I looked at him.
“I didn’t tell many people because I felt stupid.””
“You weren’t stupid.””
“I know that now.””
I touched my stomach.
“But back then, I felt like I had ignored every warning sign.””
Ethan looked down.
The irony wasn’t lost on either of us.
Because years later, I had done something similar.
I had ignored signs.
Not with Daniel.
With Ethan.
With Linda.
“You never contacted him again?”” Ethan asked.
“No.””
“Never?””
“Never.””
“Then why is your mother involved?””
I looked at him.
“That’s what we need to find out.””
The next morning, Rachel arrived at my parents’ house with a folder and an expression that told me she had found something.
She didn’t waste time.
“I reviewed the claim documents again.””
I sat at the table.
“And?””
“There’s a connection.””
Between Daniel and Linda.
I already knew it.
But hearing it mattered.
“What connection?””
Rachel opened the folder.
“Your former boyfriend’s name appears in one of the supporting documents.””
My stomach tightened.
“Why?””
“He provided a statement.””
I froze.
“What?””
Ethan, who had been standing near the window, turned around.
“Daniel provided a statement?””
Rachel nodded.
“Yes.””
I looked at Ethan.
Then back at Rachel.
“What kind of statement?””
She hesitated.
“One claiming you had financial obligations to him before your marriage.””
I felt my face go cold.
“That’s a lie.””
“I know.””
“Then why is it there?””
Rachel looked at Ethan.
“That’s the question.””
He looked frustrated.
“My mother found him.””
“Yes.””
“And she convinced him to lie?””
“We don’t know yet.””
I stood.
“Find out.””
Rachel looked at me.
“I will.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I mean find out everything.””
My voice surprised even me.
“Where he lives. Why he agreed. What Linda offered him.””
Ethan watched me.
“You think she paid him?””
“I think Linda doesn’t do anything without a reason.””
Rachel nodded.
“I’ll investigate.””
After she left, Ethan stayed.
Neither of us spoke for a while.
Finally, he said:
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at him.
“For what?””
“For not telling you about my mother asking questions.””
I didn’t answer.
“I should have told you.””
“Yes.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
Another silence.
Then:
“I also should have stood up for you.””
That sentence hurt more.
Because it was the sentence I had wanted from him all along.
Not an explanation.
Not a defense.
Recognition.
I looked away.
“I needed you to choose me.””
“I know.””
“No, Ethan.””
My voice softened.
“You know now.””
He looked down.
“I’m sorry it took this.””
I wanted to believe him.
I really did.
But trust was not a light switch.
You couldn’t turn it back on because someone finally found the right words.
“I need to know something.””
“Anything.””
“When your mother told you about Daniel…”
“Yes?””
“Did you believe her?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
That pause hurt.
More than if he had said yes.
“Ethan.””
“I didn’t know what to believe.””
I nodded slowly.
“That’s honest.””
“I was confused.””
“And you came to me because you wanted the truth?””
He looked at me.
“Yes.””
I studied his face.
“Or because you wanted me to prove I wasn’t guilty?””
His expression fell.
“Emily…”
“That’s what this feels like.””
“No.””
“Your mother created doubt, and instead of protecting me from it, you brought it to me.””
He opened his mouth.
Then closed it.
Because there was no easy answer.
That afternoon, I received a message from an unknown number.
One sentence.
*We need to talk. You deserve to know what Linda did.*
My heart stopped.
I stared at the screen.
Then another message appeared.
*Meet me alone.*
I knew immediately.
Daniel.
I showed Ethan.
His expression changed.
“Don’t go.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because this could be a trap.””
“Everything is a trap now?””
“I’m serious.””
“So am I.””
I stood.
“I need answers.””
“I’ll come with you.””
“No.””
He looked hurt.
“Why?””
“Because this started because everyone kept making decisions for me.””
I grabbed my coat.
“I’m going alone.””
He hesitated.
Then nodded.
“Please be careful.””
I almost smiled.
Because that was the first time in days he had said something that sounded like the man I married.
Not controlling.
Not demanding.
Just worried.
The meeting place was a small coffee shop across town.
Daniel was already there.
Older.
Different.
But immediately recognizable.
The moment he saw me, his expression changed.
Regret.
Fear.
Something else.
“Emily.””
I sat across from him.
“You have five minutes.””
He looked down.
“I know I don’t deserve your time.””
“No, you don’t.””
He nodded.
“I made mistakes.””
“You destroyed my trust.””
“Yes.””
“Then why are you here?””
He took a breath.
“Because Linda is more dangerous than you realize.””
I stared at him.
“You’re working with her.””
“I was.””
That caught me off guard.
“Was?””
He nodded.
“She found me months ago.””
“Why?””
“Because she was looking for information about you.””
My heart started racing.
“What information?””
Daniel looked around.
Then lowered his voice.
“She wanted something she could use against you.””
I leaned forward.
“What?””
He looked directly into my eyes.
“The truth about your daughter.””
I froze.
“What truth?””
Daniel reached into his jacket.
Pulled out an envelope.
And placed it on the table.
“I found out why Linda was so interested in your pregnancy.””
My fingers moved toward the envelope.
But before I touched it, Daniel said:
“Emily… before you open this, you need to know something.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
His voice dropped.
“Your husband isn’t the only person Linda has been lying to.””
I held my breath.
“Who else?””
May you like
Daniel stared at me.
“You.””
