Chapter 9: The Last Piece of the Trap

I was halfway down the staircase when Eleanor caught my arm.

"Claire, where are you going?""

"To see my father.""

"Not alone.""

"Someone searched his room. The original agreement is missing.""

Eleanor immediately called Robert.

Within minutes, he had arranged for security at the rehabilitation facility and instructed the staff to preserve the building's surveillance footage.

I wanted to leave immediately.

But the obstetrician had already advised me to avoid unnecessary stress and travel.

Eleanor noticed my hand resting against my stomach.

"Sweetheart, we will find out what happened. But we are not going to put you in danger.""

I took a breath.

"Marcus was there yesterday. Rebecca told me.""

"Then we need to establish whether he removed the document.""

Robert joined the call.

"There's something else you should know. The facility has confirmed that someone accessed Daniel Bennett's room using a visitor authorization registered under Marcus Hale's name.""

My stomach tightened.

"Can they prove he took the document?""

"Not yet. But they've preserved the footage.""

Eleanor looked at me.

"Then we wait for the evidence.""

I hated waiting.

I had spent months waiting for Marcus to tell me the truth.

Waiting for him to come home.

Waiting for him to notice how lonely I had become.

Waiting for him to act like the man I married.

I wasn't going to spend another day waiting for someone else to decide what happened to my child.

"Robert," I said, "I want to make a formal statement about everything.""

He nodded.

"We'll arrange it.""

"And I want the board to know that Marcus has no permission to make medical or financial decisions on my behalf.""

"That will be included.""

Eleanor squeezed my hand.

"Good.""

At 9:15 the following morning, the rehabilitation facility called.

My father had been moved to another room because staff discovered his personal documents had been disturbed.

He was safe.

But the original trust agreement was missing.

Robert arrived at Eleanor's estate with the security footage.

We watched it together.

The camera showed Marcus entering the facility at 4:42 P.M. the previous afternoon.

He carried a black leather briefcase.

At 5:18 P.M., he left.

The briefcase looked noticeably fuller.

Eleanor paused the video.

"Can you identify what he took?""

Robert shook his head.

"Not from this angle.""

Then he opened another recording.

This one showed the corridor outside my father's room.

Marcus entered carrying the briefcase.

A nurse passed him.

He smiled and held the door open.

Nothing unusual.

But when he came out, he was carrying a second folder.

A cream-colored document envelope.

I recognized it.

It was the envelope my father had shown during the video call.

"That's it," I whispered.

Robert nodded.

"It appears to be the original agreement.""

Eleanor stood.

"Then we need to report the theft.""

Robert was already making a call.

But before he could finish, my phone rang.

Marcus.

I looked at the screen.

Eleanor gestured for me to answer.

I put it on speaker.

"Hello?""

"Claire.""

His voice sounded unusually calm.

"We need to stop this nonsense.""

I looked at Eleanor.

"What nonsense?""

"Your mother-in-law has turned a private disagreement into a corporate disaster.""

"Your mother is investigating suspicious financial transfers, Marcus. That's not a private disagreement.""

He exhaled.

"Listen to me. I know you're upset. I know Vivian handled things badly. But we can still work this out.""

I almost laughed.

"Work what out?""

"The divorce. The baby. The trust.""

I looked at the window.

"You mean the money?""

"Don't be childish.""

"Then explain why you forged my signature.""

Silence.

"Who told you that?""

"Does it matter?""

"It matters because you're being manipulated.""

I shook my head.

"By whom?""

"My mother. Robert. Natalie. They're all trying to take control of my company.""

"Your company?""

"Hale Holdings.""

"Which is partly controlled by a trust established for your unborn child.""

He became irritated.

"Claire, you don't understand corporate structures.""

"Then explain the twelve million dollars.""

Silence.

I continued.

"Explain the medical report. Explain why you asked my sister to sign a guardianship declaration. Explain why Vivian practiced my signature.""

Marcus's breathing changed.

Then he said something I never expected.

"Rebecca shouldn't have told you that.""

I closed my eyes.

"Thank you.""

"What?""

"You just confirmed it.""

He went silent.

Then his voice became cold.

"You're making a serious mistake.""

"No, Marcus. I made one three years ago.""

"And what's that?""

"Marrying you.""

He laughed bitterly.

"You think Eleanor is going to protect you forever? She has her own interests.""

"Maybe. But at least she isn't trying to steal my child.""

His voice dropped.

"You're not listening.""

"Then tell me the truth.""

He paused.

"Vivian and I have a plan. The trust was never supposed to work the way my father designed it. He wanted to punish me for being successful.""

I stared at the phone.

"Your father wanted to protect his grandson.""

"His grandson is my son!""

"Then why are you trying to take him away from me?""

"Because you're not capable of managing what he will inherit.""

I felt something inside me go completely still.

There it was.

Not an apology.

Not regret.

Not even an attempt to pretend.

He believed I was beneath him.

He believed that because I had trusted him, he could decide what happened to my life.

I spoke quietly.

"You should stop calling me.""

"Claire—"

"Speak to my lawyer.""

I ended the call.

Eleanor looked at me.

"Are you all right?""

I nodded.

For the first time, I wasn't waiting for him to change his mind.

By noon, Robert had filed an urgent request for the preservation and recovery of the original trust agreement.

The board had also voted to suspend Marcus's authority over trust-related transactions pending investigation.

Vivian's consulting contract was frozen.

Natalie had agreed to cooperate fully and provide the original electronic records.

But the biggest development came from the rehabilitation facility.

A nurse named Patricia called Robert.

She had found something.

A small voice recorder hidden behind a cabinet in my father's room.

It had been placed there during the previous afternoon.

Robert arranged for the device to be examined.

The recording was clear.

Marcus's voice came first.

"Daniel, we need to talk about the old agreement.""

My father's voice sounded weak.

"There's nothing to discuss.""

"You're making this difficult.""

"You forged my granddaughter's signature.""

A pause.

Then Marcus laughed.

"That's an accusation.""

"It's the truth.""

"Claire doesn't need to know about any of this.""

"She's the child's mother.""

"She's emotional. She won't understand.""

My father's voice became stronger.

"Then explain it to her.""

Marcus sighed.

"Vivian and I are going to get married. We have a plan. The trust is too large to be managed by people who don't understand business.""

"And you think Vivian should manage it?""

"She understands what needs to happen.""

My father's voice was quiet.

"You're planning to take the money.""

Marcus didn't deny it.

"Not all of it.""

"How much?""

"Enough to establish something independent.""

"That's theft.""

"It's business.""

Then came a sound.

A chair moving.

My father spoke again.

"Marcus, listen to me. Claire has done nothing to deserve this.""

Marcus's reply made my blood run cold.

"That's why it will be easier if everyone believes she's unfit.""

The recording continued.

My father asked, "And the baby?""

Marcus answered without hesitation.

"The baby will be raised by people who can give him the life he deserves.""

My father whispered, "You mean Vivian.""

"She'll be a much better influence than Claire.""

There was a long silence.

Then my father said:

"You should leave.""

Marcus laughed.

"You're in no position to give me orders.""

A door slammed.

The recording ended.

I sat motionless.

Eleanor had tears in her eyes.

Robert looked furious.

And I couldn't stop thinking about the way Marcus had spoken about our child.

Not as a person.

Not as a baby.

As an asset.

Something to be controlled.

Something that would make him rich.

Eleanor reached across the table.

"Claire.""

I looked at her.

"We have him.""

Robert nodded.

"This recording is extremely important. We'll preserve it, authenticate it, and submit it to the appropriate investigators.""

I wiped my eyes.

"What about the original agreement?""

"Even without it, the recording and other evidence give us grounds to challenge his actions. But we still need the original.""

I looked at the screen.

"Then find it.""

That afternoon, I received another call.

This time, it was from Rebecca.

I almost let it go to voicemail.

But I answered.

"Claire?""

"What?""

She was crying.

"Marcus called me.""

I said nothing.

"He told me I had ruined everything.""

"Did you?""

"I gave him information about the agreement. I thought he was going to use it to protect the baby.""

"You knew what he was planning.""

"I know.""

"Then why are you calling?""

She took a shaky breath.

"Because he threatened me.""

I sat straighter.

"What did he say?""

"He said if I didn't tell him where Dad's original document was, he'd make sure I was charged with fraud too.""

I stared at the phone.

"Where is it, Rebecca?""

"I don't know.""

"Are you sure?""

"Yes. But there's something I haven't told you.""

I closed my eyes.

"What now?""

"Before Dad moved rehabilitation rooms, I helped him put some personal things in a storage locker.""

My heart began pounding.

"What things?""

"His old files. Photographs. Letters. Documents he didn't want the facility to keep.""

"Did he put the original agreement there?""

"I don't know. But I remember him saying something about keeping the most important document somewhere nobody would think to look.""

"Where is the locker?""

Rebecca gave me an address.

It was a storage facility on the outskirts of Chicago.

Robert immediately contacted the facility and arranged for the property to be secured pending verification of ownership.

But before we could leave, Rebecca spoke again.

"Claire?""

"What?""

"There's something else in Dad's box.""

I waited.

"A letter.""

"To whom?""

"To you.""

I felt my throat tighten.

"What does it say?""

Rebecca hesitated.

"He wrote that if Marcus ever tried to take control of the trust, you should ask Eleanor about the original beneficiary arrangement.""

I looked at Eleanor.

Her face changed.

"Why?"" I asked.

Rebecca whispered:

"Because Dad said the baby wasn't the only person protected by the trust.""

I turned toward Eleanor.

"What does that mean?""

She looked away.

For the first time since the hotel incident, my mother-in-law seemed unable to meet my eyes.

Then she spoke.

"Claire, there's something your father-in-law never told Marcus.""

"What?""

Eleanor took a slow breath.

"The trust doesn't simply protect your child's inheritance.""

She paused.

"It also contains a provision that could remove Marcus from Hale Holdings permanently.""

I stared at her.

"Why?""

"Because the person who attempts to steal from the beneficiary automatically becomes subject to a forfeiture clause.""

Robert looked up sharply.

"Are you saying Marcus could lose his entire executive position and his remaining trust interests?""

Eleanor nodded.

"If the evidence proves deliberate fraud, yes.""

My phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number.

It contained a photograph of a document lying on a desk.

The original trust agreement.

Beneath it was a handwritten note.

*You have until tomorrow morning to withdraw the complaint. Otherwise, you'll never see the original again.*

I stared at the photograph.

Then I noticed something in the corner.

A reflection in the glass desk.

A woman standing behind the person taking the picture.

I enlarged it.

Her face became clearer.

Vivian.

And in her hand was a set of keys.

Keys I recognized.

They belonged to my father's storage locker.

I looked at Eleanor.

"She's been there.""

Robert immediately called the storage facility.

But my phone vibrated again.

This time, the message was from Vivian herself.

*One final offer, Claire. Sign the divorce and guardianship agreement, and I'll make sure your baby never wants for anything. Refuse, and you'll lose much more than money.*

I stared at the words.

Then I looked at Eleanor.

"She's threatening my child.""

Eleanor's expression became ice-cold.

"Then tomorrow, we end this.""

But as Robert prepared to call the authorities, another notification appeared on his laptop.

The trust administrator had just received a new document.

An emergency request to transfer the entire trust into a private holding company.

The authorization carried my electronic signature.

And the transfer was scheduled to become effective at midnight.

I looked at the screen.

My signature.

My name.

My unborn child's inheritance.

Someone had just attempted the final transfer.

And this time, the document included a certificate claiming that I had personally approved it in front of a notary.

A notary whose name I recognized.

*Robert Whitmore.*

My lawyer.

The man sitting in the room with us.

Eleanor slowly turned toward him.

Robert stared at the document.

Then he whispered:

May you like

"That's not my signature.""

And somewhere in the building, his phone began ringing.
