Chapter 7: The Recording That Was Supposed to Destroy Me
I didn't sleep that night.
Every time I closed my eyes, I heard the same words.
Tomorrow, everyone will finally see the truth about you.
Marcus had spent months building a version of me that didn't exist.
A jealous wife.
An unstable pregnant woman.
A mother who couldn't be trusted with her own child.
And now he had a recording from the worst night of my life.
The night I lost our first pregnancy.
I remembered every second of that evening.
The blood on the bathroom floor.
The hospital lights.
The doctor who couldn't look me in the eyes.
And the way I had collapsed against Marcus when he told me we would try again.
He had held me for hours.
He had promised we would get through it together.
Apparently, he'd also been recording me.
At seven the following morning, Eleanor arrived at Robert's office carrying two cups of coffee and a thick folder.
She placed one cup in front of me.
"Did you get any sleep?""
"Not really.""
"That's understandable.""
I wrapped my hands around the cup.
"Do you think he'll actually play it?""
Eleanor sat opposite me.
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"Because he believes it will make people question your credibility before they examine his behavior.""
Robert entered, carrying his laptop.
"We have confirmation that Marcus intends to present the recording during the emergency board meeting.""
"Can he do that?"" I asked.
"He can attempt to introduce it. Whether the board accepts it as relevant is another matter.""
Eleanor opened her folder.
"There's something else. The board members have received an anonymous package.""
Robert stopped walking.
"What package?""
"Several documents describing Claire's alleged medical history, along with copies of the forged guardianship declaration.""
I felt sick.
"Who sent them?""
"Someone using an anonymous email account.""
Robert placed his laptop on the table.
"I've been expecting something like this.""
He opened a message.
"One of the board members forwarded the package to me. It includes a written statement supposedly from Claire's treating physician.""
I shook my head.
"I've never had a treating physician.""
"Exactly.""
Robert enlarged the document.
The letter claimed I had experienced recurring emotional episodes, had displayed aggressive behavior toward my husband, and had expressed fears that Marcus intended to steal our baby.
I read the final paragraph.
In my professional opinion, Mrs. Hale may require supervised assistance when making significant decisions concerning the unborn beneficiary.
My fingers tightened.
"Who signed it?""
Robert pointed to the bottom.
Dr. Samuel Whitaker.
The same doctor connected to the fake medical referral.
Eleanor closed the folder.
"Then we have enough reason to challenge the entire submission.""
Robert nodded.
"I've contacted the medical center's compliance department. They're investigating whether Dr. Whitaker actually examined Claire or authorized the report.""
I looked at the clock.
7:35 A.M.
The meeting began in twenty-five minutes.
"Can we stop him?""
Robert shook his head.
"Not before the meeting. But we can make sure the board understands that the allegations are disputed and the documents are under investigation.""
Eleanor stood.
"Then let's go.""
Hale Holdings occupied the upper floors of a glass tower overlooking downtown Chicago.
I'd been there countless times.
Marcus had taken me to company dinners, charity events, and holiday celebrations.
Employees used to smile when I walked through the lobby.
Some called me Mrs. Hale.
Others asked when the baby was due.
Today, the receptionist barely looked at me.
A security guard approached.
"Mrs. Hale, I'm afraid your access has been temporarily suspended.""
I stopped.
"Suspended?""
He looked uncomfortable.
"I'm following instructions from management.""
Eleanor stepped forward.
"Who authorized that?""
"Mr. Hale.""
Eleanor handed him a document.
"Read the first paragraph.""
The guard scanned it.
His expression changed.
"This is a formal notice from the trustee," she explained.
"It confirms that I retain authority over the trust matters being discussed today. Claire is attending as the mother of the unborn beneficiary.""
The guard stepped aside.
"I'm sorry, Mrs. Hale.""
I followed Eleanor toward the elevators.
As the doors opened on the thirty-second floor, I saw Vivian.
She was standing outside the boardroom in a fitted white dress, holding a tablet.
Her smile appeared the moment she noticed me.
"Well, look who's here.""
I continued walking.
Vivian stepped into my path.
"I wouldn't get too comfortable, Claire.""
Eleanor stopped.
"Move.""
Vivian laughed.
"Mrs. Hale, this is a corporate meeting. Perhaps you should remember that.""
Eleanor looked at the tablet in her hand.
"Perhaps you should remember that you're not an employee of this company.""
Vivian's smile faded.
"Marcus invited me.""
"Then Marcus has made another poor decision.""
The boardroom doors opened.
Marcus emerged.
His eyes immediately found me.
For a moment, something like surprise crossed his face.
Then he smiled.
"Claire. I didn't think you'd come.""
I looked at him.
"You told me to bring a lawyer.""
Robert stepped forward.
"Good morning, Mr. Hale.""
Marcus glanced at him.
"Robert. I was hoping you wouldn't interfere.""
"I'm afraid that's no longer possible.""
Marcus looked at Eleanor.
"Mother, let's not turn this into a family circus.""
Eleanor walked past him.
"Then stop conducting your business like a criminal.""
Vivian's mouth fell open.
Marcus's face hardened.
"Careful.""
Eleanor didn't even turn around.
"That's advice you should have taken months ago.""
The boardroom was filled with twelve directors.
At the far end sat the company's independent chairman, Richard Coleman.
He greeted Eleanor formally, then looked at me.
"Mrs. Hale, I understand this is a difficult situation. We'll try to keep today's proceedings focused on the company's interests.""
Marcus took his seat.
Vivian sat beside him, although she wasn't officially a director.
Robert objected immediately.
"On what authority is Ms. Cross participating in this meeting?""
Marcus answered.
"She's here as an external consultant.""
Eleanor placed a document on the table.
"Her consulting agreement is currently under review because of suspicious financial transactions.""
Richard frowned.
"That's a serious allegation.""
"It is," Eleanor replied.
"And we have documents supporting an investigation.""
Marcus leaned back.
"Mother, you're making accusations without understanding the full picture.""
Richard raised a hand.
"Let's proceed.""
Marcus stood.
He connected his laptop to the large presentation screen.
"Over the past several months, the company has faced increasing uncertainty regarding the family trust. My mother has repeatedly interfered with executive decisions, and certain personal circumstances have made it difficult to maintain stability.""
He looked directly at me.
I knew what was coming.
"Unfortunately, those circumstances involve my wife.""
He clicked the remote.
A video appeared.
It showed our old kitchen.
The date was visible in the corner.
Fourteen months earlier.
I was sitting on the floor, crying.
My hair was tangled. My face was swollen. I was wearing the gray sweater I had worn to the hospital.
Marcus's voice came from behind the camera.
"Claire, you need to calm down.""
My recorded voice answered.
"I can't do this anymore!""
The video continued.
I was sobbing.
"I can't keep losing our babies. I can't!""
Marcus's voice became softer.
"You're upsetting yourself.""
"Then stop telling me everything will be fine!""
The clip ended.
The boardroom was silent.
Marcus turned toward the directors.
"This was recorded during one of several emotional episodes. My wife has struggled with serious psychological instability, and I've been concerned about her ability to make decisions regarding our unborn child.""
I stared at him.
He had taken the worst moment of my life and turned it into a presentation.
He hadn't shown the hospital.
He hadn't shown the doctor explaining our loss.
He hadn't shown himself holding me afterward.
He had shown only the moment when I broke.
Marcus continued.
"I don't want to take anything away from Claire. But the family needs to consider the child's best interests.""
Richard looked toward me.
"Mrs. Hale, would you like to respond?""
I stood.
My legs felt weak, but my voice was steady.
"Yes.""
I walked toward the screen.
"That video was recorded fourteen months ago, after I lost my first pregnancy. My husband knew exactly what I was going through because he was standing beside me at the hospital.""
I looked at Marcus.
"You held me that night.""
He said nothing.
"You told me I wasn't alone.""
His jaw tightened.
"And now you're showing the world a few seconds of my grief to convince people that I shouldn't raise my own child.""
I turned toward the directors.
"I have never been diagnosed with a psychiatric condition. I have never been treated by Dr. Whitaker. And I never authorized anyone to make medical decisions on my behalf.""
Robert placed a letter on the table.
"This is a formal notice disputing the authenticity of the medical authorization and the physician's report. Northbridge Medical Center has confirmed that its compliance department is reviewing the unauthorized submission.""
Marcus stood.
"That's ridiculous.""
Richard picked up the letter.
"Mr. Hale, is there evidence that your wife was examined by this physician?""
Marcus hesitated.
"Not personally, but—"
"Then what is the basis of the report?""
Vivian interrupted.
"Marcus was simply trying to protect the baby.""
Eleanor turned toward her.
"Then perhaps you can explain why your company received twelve million dollars in suspicious payments from Hale Holdings.""
The room erupted.
"What?""
"Which payments?""
"Is that true?""
Vivian went pale.
Marcus slammed his hand on the table.
"This meeting is about governance, not personal attacks!""
Robert opened his briefcase.
"Actually, the two are connected.""
He distributed copies of the financial records.
"These transactions are currently being examined. Several appear to involve duplicate invoices and unauthorized transfers.""
Richard scanned the documents.
"Mr. Hale, do you have an explanation?""
Marcus looked at Vivian.
She looked back.
Neither spoke.
Then the boardroom doors opened.
A woman entered carrying a sealed envelope.
It was Natalie.
She looked terrified.
But she walked directly toward Robert.
"I have the original files," she said.
Marcus shot to his feet.
"Natalie, what are you doing here?""
She flinched.
Robert took the envelope.
"Please explain what you've brought.""
Natalie swallowed.
"Emails, accounting records, and the original agreement between Mr. Hale and Ms. Cross.""
Vivian stood abruptly.
"She's lying!""
Natalie looked at her.
"No, I'm not.""
Marcus stepped toward her.
"You signed a confidentiality agreement.""
"And you asked me to upload forged documents using my credentials.""
The room fell silent.
Natalie placed a second envelope on the table.
"And there's something else.""
She looked at me.
"I'm sorry, Mrs. Hale. I should have spoken sooner.""
Then she turned toward the board.
"Mr. Hale didn't just arrange a medical report about his wife. He also instructed me to create a record showing that she had voluntarily agreed to transfer control of the baby's trust.""
Richard looked at Marcus.
"Did you do that?""
Marcus's expression hardened.
"She's an employee with a personal grievance.""
Natalie shook her head.
"Then explain the emails.""
She handed Robert a printed page.
He read it.
Then slowly turned toward the board.
"This email is dated six weeks ago. It contains instructions from Mr. Hale to prepare the guardianship documents before the child's birth.""
Eleanor leaned forward.
"Read the final paragraph.""
Robert did.
Once the transfer is complete, Vivian will assume administrative control. Rebecca's participation is secured. Claire will be kept away from the process until the legal position is irreversible.
I felt my stomach tighten.
Marcus had planned everything.
The affair.
The forged medical records.
My sister's involvement.
The trust transfer.
And the divorce.
Richard removed his glasses.
"Mr. Hale, I think we need to suspend this meeting.""
Marcus looked around the table.
"You're making a mistake.""
Richard shook his head.
"No. I think we've discovered one.""
But before anyone could speak again, the conference room television suddenly lit up.
A notification appeared.
*INCOMING VIDEO CALL — REBECCA BENNETT.*
Marcus stared at the screen.
For the first time that morning, he looked completely terrified.
Because Rebecca wasn't supposed to be calling.
And when the video connected, she wasn't alone.
Beside her sat a man in a hospital gown.
A man I recognized immediately.
May you like
My father.
And he was holding a document with my name on it.
