Chapter 6: The Promise My Husband Buried

We drove home without speaking.

James kept both hands on the steering wheel.

I watched the city pass outside the window, but my mind remained in that interview room.

Margaret's final words wouldn't leave me alone.

Ask James what he promised his brother.

I waited until we reached the driveway.

Then I turned toward him.

"What did Daniel ask you to do?""

James didn't answer.

I unfastened my seat belt.

"James.""

He closed his eyes.

"Can we talk inside?""

"No. We can talk now.""

He looked at me.

His eyes were red.

"I need you to understand that I never wanted any of this.""

"Then tell me the truth.""

He stared through the windshield.

"Daniel called me the night before his accident.""

My stomach tightened.

"What did he say?""

"He told me Sarah was pregnant.""

I looked at him.

"You knew about her?""

"Yes.""

"And you never told me?""

James shook his head.

"Daniel made me promise not to.""

I laughed bitterly.

"Your family seems to have a lot of promises involving secrets.""

He didn't respond.

I waited.

Finally, he continued.

"Daniel said he wanted to leave the family. He wanted to marry Sarah and raise their baby somewhere far away.""

"Why didn't he?""

"Because Mother threatened to destroy him financially.""

I looked at him.

"That was the night before the accident?""

"Yes.""

James rubbed his face.

"He was angry. He called me because he wanted someone to help him. He said he was afraid Mother would take the baby away.""

I felt cold.

"What did you promise him?""

James looked down.

"I promised I'd protect his child.""

I stared at him.

"And then he died.""

James nodded.

"Two days later.""

I stepped out of the car.

He followed me.

"Emily, please.""

I turned.

"You promised your dying brother you'd protect his child, and you let your mother control everything?""

"I didn't know what she was doing!""

"But you knew about Sarah!""

"I thought the baby had died.""

I looked at him.

"Did you ever verify that?""

He was silent.

"Did you ask to see the medical records?""

"No.""

"Did you ask for a death certificate?""

"No.""

"Did you ask Sarah what happened?""

James's face crumpled.

"Mother told me Sarah had disappeared and that Daniel's child had died before birth. I believed her.""

I shook my head.

"How convenient.""

He reached for my hand.

I stepped away.

"Don't.""

His shoulders dropped.

"I know I've failed you.""

"You didn't just fail me, James. You failed two little girls.""

He nodded.

Then he said something I hadn't expected.

"There's something else.""

I closed my eyes.

"Of course there is.""

"Daniel left me a letter.""

I turned.

"What letter?""

James went inside and returned several minutes later carrying a small wooden box.

It was the box he kept in his office.

I had seen it before, but he'd always said it contained old family photographs.

He opened it.

Inside were several envelopes.

One was addressed to him in Daniel's handwriting.

The paper was yellowed at the edges.

James handed it to me.

I unfolded it carefully.

James,

If you're reading this, something has happened that I couldn't prevent. I need you to do one thing for me.

Find my daughter.

Don't let Mother decide where she belongs. Don't let her use money or the Sterling name to take control of my child.

If Sarah can't raise her alone, help her. But never separate my daughter from the truth.

And James, whatever happens, don't let Mother convince you that love means obedience.

Your brother,

Daniel.

I lowered the letter.

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

James sat on the sofa.

"I found it after the funeral. Mother told me Daniel was emotional and that the letter was written during a difficult period.""

I looked at him.

"And you believed her?""

"I was grieving.""

"So was Sarah.""

He nodded.

"I know.""

I placed the letter on the table.

"Did you know Margaret had arranged the fertility treatment?""

"No.""

"Did you know she had used Daniel's genetic material?""

"No.""

"Did you know she had paid Claire?""

"No.""

I studied his face.

He looked genuinely devastated.

But devastation wasn't the same as innocence.

I had to think about Lily.

About Grace.

About the two little girls whose lives had been decided by adults who believed money could make everything disappear.

I went upstairs.

Lily was sitting on the carpet, arranging her stuffed animals in a line.

When she saw me, she smiled.

"Mommy!""

I knelt beside her.

"Hi, baby.""

She pointed at the toys.

"This is you. This is Daddy. This is me.""

I smiled.

"Who's that?""

She picked up a small teddy bear.

"That's my sister.""

My throat tightened.

"Why did you give her a teddy bear?""

"Because she might be scared.""

I kissed her forehead.

"That's very kind.""

Lily looked up.

"Can I meet her?""

I brushed a strand of hair away from her face.

"We're going to try, sweetheart.""

"Will she like me?""

"I think she'd be very lucky to have you.""

Lily considered that.

Then she whispered, "I can share my pink hair clips.""

I held her close.

That night, I couldn't sleep.

At two in the morning, I went downstairs for water.

James was sitting in the dark.

The wooden box was open on the table.

He was holding Daniel's letter.

I stopped in the doorway.

"Why are you awake?""

He looked up.

"I keep hearing his voice.""

I walked toward the kitchen.

James spoke again.

"Emily, I want to help find Grace.""

I stopped.

"Then we need to do this properly. No more secrets. No more decisions made by your family without Sarah's knowledge.""

"I agree.""

"And Margaret doesn't get access to Lily.""

He nodded.

"I'll make sure of it.""

I poured water into a glass.

Then my phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

A message appeared.

Mrs. Sterling, my name is Claire Dawson. I used to work for Margaret.

I stared at the screen.

Another message arrived.

I know you're looking for Grace.

Then a photograph.

It showed a little girl asleep beneath a pink blanket.

Her face was turned toward the camera.

I recognized the dimple.

The nose.

The dark hair.

My hand began trembling.

A third message appeared.

She's your biological daughter. I have raised her for six years, but Margaret has just contacted me. She's coming to take Grace away.

I immediately called the number.

It rang once.

Twice.

Then a woman answered.

"Hello?""

"Claire? This is Emily Sterling.""

There was a long silence.

Then Claire began crying.

"Please don't hang up.""

"I'm not hanging up. Where are you?""

"At my apartment.""

"Is Grace with you?""

"Yes.""

"Is she safe?""

Claire hesitated.

"Right now, yes.""

I gripped the counter.

"What do you mean, right now?""

Claire lowered her voice.

"Margaret knows I've been talking to Sarah. She sent two men to my building this afternoon.""

My heart pounded.

"Who were they?""

"Her security people. They said she wanted Grace returned to the family.""

"Returned?""

Claire sobbed.

"She said the child belongs to the Sterlings.""

I looked toward James.

He was already standing.

"Claire, listen to me. Do not open your door to anyone. We're coming.""

"Wait.""

Her voice became urgent.

"There's something else you need to know.""

"What?""

Claire took a shaky breath.

"Margaret didn't just switch the babies.""

I closed my eyes.

"What else did she do?""

"She made me sign a document saying I had never seen either child before. But before she paid me, she showed me something.""

"What?""

"A second hospital record.""

I felt my knees weaken.

"Which hospital record?""

Claire whispered:

"The original birth certificate for Lily.""

I looked at James.

He had heard everything.

"What does it say?"" I asked.

Claire began crying harder.

"It lists Sarah Bennett as the mother.""

I stared at the wall.

"That means Lily is Sarah's biological daughter.""

"Yes.""

"And Grace?""

"Grace is yours.""

I couldn't breathe.

Two daughters.

Two mothers.

Two lives deliberately rearranged.

Then Claire said the words that shattered whatever hope I had left.

"Mrs. Sterling, Margaret didn't switch the babies to give Daniel's child a family.""

I tightened my grip on the phone.

"Then why?""

"Because she wanted to erase Sarah from Daniel's life completely.""

A noise sounded in the background.

A door slamming.

Claire gasped.

"Someone's here.""

"Claire?""

I heard hurried footsteps.

Then a man's voice.

"Open the door!""

Claire whispered:

"She's found us.""

The call went dead.

James grabbed his keys.

I rushed upstairs, woke Mrs. Collins, and told her to stay with Lily.

Then I ran back downstairs.

James was standing by the front door.

"Emily, wait for the police.""

I shook my head.

"That little girl has spent six years without her mother.""

"Claire could be in danger.""

"Then we need to get there.""

He opened the door.

But before we could leave, another message appeared on my phone.

It was from Claire.

Only four words.

May you like

*"Margaret has taken Grace.""*

And beneath it was a photograph of an empty pink bed.
