Chapter 4: The Woman Outside Our House

James stared at the photograph on his phone.

The woman standing outside our house had shoulder-length brown hair, pale skin, and a small scar above her left eyebrow.

The little girl beside her wore pink hair clips.

Lily's favorite kind.

But the child in the photograph wasn't Lily.

She looked about six years old.

She had the same dark eyes, the same tiny nose, and the same dimple that appeared whenever she smiled.

My fingers tightened around the photograph Margaret had given me.

"Who is she?"" I asked.

James didn't answer.

I looked at Margaret.

"Do you know that woman?""

My mother-in-law lowered her eyes.

"Emily, I think we should all go home.""

"That's not an answer.""

"You're upset. You're making assumptions based on incomplete information.""

I held up James's phone.

"Then tell me who is standing outside my house.""

Margaret looked at the screen.

Her face lost its color.

James noticed.

"Mother?""

She reached for a chair.

"That's Sarah.""

"Sarah Bennett?""

Margaret nodded.

James looked at the photograph again.

"Why is she at our house?""

"I don't know.""

"Stop lying!""

His voice echoed through the conference room.

Margaret flinched.

"I haven't seen her in years.""

"Then how did she get our address?""

Margaret pressed her lips together.

I turned toward James.

"Call the police.""

He looked at me.

"Emily, let's not overreact.""

I stared at him.

"There's a woman outside our home holding a child who may be connected to the hospital records. We don't know what she wants. Our daughter is there with Mrs. Collins.""

His expression changed immediately.

He called Mrs. Collins.

She answered on the second ring.

"Mr. Sterling?""

"Is anyone outside the house?""

There was a pause.

"Yes, sir. A woman is standing by the front gate.""

"Is Lily with you?""

"She's upstairs.""

"Lock the doors. Don't let anyone inside.""

Mrs. Collins sounded frightened.

"Is something wrong?""

"Just do what I said.""

James ended the call.

Then he looked at me.

"We're going home.""

Margaret stood.

"I'm coming with you.""

"No," James said.

She blinked.

"What?""

"You've done enough for one evening.""

"James, I'm your mother.""

"And I'm Lily's father.""

For the first time, Margaret seemed unable to find a response.

We left the hotel through a side entrance.

The night air was cold, and the streets were nearly empty.

During the drive, James kept checking his phone.

I sat beside him, holding the photograph.

I couldn't stop looking at the little girl.

Who was she?

Was she Lily's biological sister?

Had someone taken her from another family?

Or had Margaret somehow arranged another deception?

My mind returned to the words on the message.

Your daughter has been looking for her real mother for six years.

I looked at James.

"Do you think Lily is the child in the photograph?""

"No.""

He answered too quickly.

"How can you be sure?""

"Because that's not Lily.""

"Then who is she?""

He gripped the steering wheel.

"I don't know.""

I looked out the window.

"James, I need you to understand something. I don't care whether Lily shares my DNA. I don't care whose genetic material was used. I want to know what happened to her.""

"I know.""

"And if your mother took a baby from someone...""

He swallowed.

"We'll find out.""

When we reached the house, two police officers were standing near the gate.

Mrs. Collins was waiting on the front steps.

She hurried toward us.

"Mrs. Emily!""

"Where's Lily?""

"Upstairs. She's safe.""

I rushed inside.

Lily was sitting on her bed, wearing her blue pajamas, with her teddy bear tucked under one arm.

Her eyes were swollen from crying.

"Mommy!""

She jumped into my arms.

I held her tightly.

"Hi, my love.""

"Is Grandma coming?""

I hesitated.

"No, sweetheart.""

Lily looked down.

"Is she still mad at me?""

My heart broke.

"No. But Grandma isn't going to hurt you again.""

Lily nodded slowly.

Then she whispered, "The lady outside said she knew my name.""

I froze.

"What lady?""

"The lady at the gate.""

I crouched in front of her.

"Did she talk to you?""

Lily nodded.

"She waved at me through the window.""

"What did she say?""

"She said, 'Hello, Lily.''"

My stomach tightened.

"Did she tell you anything else?""

Lily looked at her teddy bear.

"She said she knew my daddy.""

I kissed her forehead.

"You're safe, sweetheart.""

When I left the bedroom, James was speaking to the officers.

The woman outside had already been escorted away.

But she had left something with them.

A small white envelope.

James opened it in the foyer.

Inside was a photograph of a newborn baby.

On the back, someone had written:

The baby you raised was never the baby you were promised.

James's face tightened.

He turned the photograph over.

There was a hospital bracelet attached to the corner.

The name read:

*Sarah Bennett — Baby Girl.*

I looked at him.

"James, what does this mean?""

He shook his head.

"I don't know.""

One of the officers cleared his throat.

"Sir, the woman identified herself as Sarah Bennett. She says she has information about an incident at St. Mary's Hospital six years ago.""

"Did she explain what happened?""

"She asked to speak directly with Mrs. Emily Sterling.""

I felt my heart beating faster.

"Why me?""

The officer handed me another piece of paper.

It was a handwritten note.

Emily, I have waited six years to tell you the truth. Margaret made us believe our daughters were gone forever. But one of them is still alive. And the other is sleeping in your house.

I looked up.

"One of them?""

James took the note from my hand.

His face had gone white.

"Two daughters?""

Before I could respond, his phone rang.

The caller ID displayed an unfamiliar number.

He answered.

"Hello?""

A woman's voice came through.

"James Sterling?""

"Who's this?""

"My name is Sarah Bennett. I know you're with Emily.""

James looked at me.

"Where are you?""

"At the police station. They asked me to come in tomorrow morning.""

"What do you want?""

There was a long silence.

Then Sarah whispered:

"I want my daughter back.""

I felt the room spin.

James closed his eyes.

"Which daughter?""

Sarah's answer came quietly.

"Both.""

The call ended.

I stood motionless.

Then I heard footsteps on the stairs.

Lily appeared at the top, holding her teddy bear.

"Mommy?""

I turned.

"Yes, baby?""

She looked at James.

"Can I ask something?""

James immediately walked toward her.

"Of course.""

Lily hesitated.

"Why did that lady say I have a sister?""

Neither of us moved.

May you like

Then Lily added something that made James drop his phone.

"She said her little girl has the same birthday as me.""
