Chapter 8: The Sister Nobody Told Me About

I read the sentence three times.
She is your sister.
My mother took the letter from my hands.
Her eyes moved quickly across the page.
“No,” she whispered.
Mr. Bennett looked at her.
“Laura?””
She shook her head.
“That isn't possible.””
My father stared at the photograph.
“Who is Rebecca?””
Nobody answered.
I looked at my mother.
“Do I have a sister?””
She slowly sat on the edge of Grandpa's bed.
“I don't know.””
“But Grandpa wrote that she is.””
Laura pressed the letter against her chest.
“Your grandfather never told me about another child.””
Mr. Bennett picked up the envelope addressed to Michael.
“Perhaps we should read this before making assumptions.””
He opened it carefully.
Inside was a handwritten statement dated four years earlier.
The first paragraph read:
Michael, I know who you are. I know what you did in 2018. But I also know that Rebecca is not responsible for your actions.
Mr. Bennett continued reading.
She deserves to know that she has a sister. She deserves to know that the money you have been demanding was never yours to claim.
My father frowned.
“What money?””
Mr. Bennett turned the page.
There was a reference to the original trust.
And another reference to a separate account.
The same account Diane had mentioned.
But the most disturbing part came at the end.
If you continue trying to reach Maya, I will have no choice but to reveal the truth about Rebecca's birth.
I looked at my mother.
“Was Grandpa protecting her too?””
Laura nodded slowly.
“Apparently.””
Mr. Bennett removed the USB drive.
“Let's see what else Harold preserved.””
He took out his laptop and connected the drive.
There were several files.
Most were scanned documents.
One was a video.
The filename was simple.
*FOR MAYA — WATCH WHEN SHE KNOWS ABOUT REBECCA.*
My father looked at me.
“Are you sure you want to see this?””
I nodded.
Mr. Bennett clicked the file.
Grandpa appeared on the screen.
He was sitting in his study, wearing his favorite brown sweater. His face looked thinner than I remembered, but his eyes were bright.
For a moment, I forgot to breathe.
“Hello, sweetheart.””
I started crying immediately.
Grandpa smiled.
“If you're watching this, then Mr. Bennett has finally done what I asked him to do. And you've probably discovered that your family is even more complicated than you imagined.””
He chuckled softly.
Then his expression became serious.
“Maya, I need you to listen carefully. There are things I should have told you long ago. I was afraid that knowing them would hurt you, but I now understand that silence can be more dangerous than the truth.””
He leaned closer to the camera.
“Rebecca Carter is your half-sister. Her mother was a woman named Claire Bennett.””
Mr. Bennett went still.
My mother looked at him.
“Claire Bennett?””
He nodded slowly.
“My sister.””
The room fell silent.
I looked at the photograph again.
The girl in the white dress was Mr. Bennett's niece.
Grandpa continued.
“Claire and Michael were married briefly. Their relationship ended badly. Michael disappeared when Rebecca was still very young.””
He paused.
“Claire later contacted me because she believed Michael was involved in financial crimes. She was frightened. She had discovered documents linking him to the same trust arrangements that eventually affected you.””
My father sat down.
“Why didn't Harold tell me?””
Grandpa's recorded image looked directly into the camera.
“Because Richard, you were already involved in one deception. I couldn't risk giving you another opportunity to make the wrong decision.””
My father lowered his head.
Grandpa continued.
“Michael wanted access to the money Thomas Reed had placed in trust for Maya. He believed that because he had once been Thomas's business partner, he was entitled to a portion of it.””
Mr. Bennett leaned toward the screen.
“That wasn't true.””
Grandpa nodded, as if he had heard him.
“No. It wasn't. But Michael had information that allowed him to pressure several people into cooperating.””
The recording paused briefly.
Then Grandpa said something that made Diane, standing in the doorway, close her eyes.
“He knew about the original hospital transfer before it happened.””
My father turned toward her.
“What?””
Grandpa continued.
“He had been working with Dr. Whitmore for months. Their plan involved moving Maya away from her mother and placing her under a guardian who could authorize financial transactions.””
My mother began crying.
“I never knew.””
Grandpa's expression softened.
“Laura, if you're watching this, I'm sorry. I should have found you sooner. I should have questioned the story Richard and Diane told me.
I believed the hospital paperwork. I believed the people who said they were helping.””
He took a breath.
“But I eventually discovered that Michael had been using Rebecca's identity and my name to access several accounts.””
Mr. Bennett looked at the photograph.
“That's why Rebecca's name was on the second account.””
Grandpa nodded again.
“Diane was told the account belonged to Emily. She believed she was helping her daughter. But the real beneficiary was Rebecca Carter.””
I stared at the screen.
“Then why did the bank statements show Emily's name?””
Mr. Bennett paused the video.
“Because the account may have been opened using Emily's identity.””
Emily wasn't there to hear it.
She had gone home with her aunt earlier that evening, but I suddenly wished she were beside me.
Mr. Bennett resumed the recording.
Grandpa looked tired.
“Maya, I want you to understand something. Rebecca did not choose any of this. She was a child, just as you were. She was used by adults who wanted money and power.””
He reached for something beside him.
It was another photograph.
This time, it showed two little girls standing in a garden.
One was Rebecca.
The other was me.
I gasped.
“That's me.””
Grandpa nodded.
“You met Rebecca when you were three years old. It was at Claire's house. You played together for an entire afternoon. I remember you refusing to leave because she had a dollhouse.””
My mother covered her mouth.
“I don't remember that.””
“You were very young,” Grandpa said through the recording.
Then he looked directly into the camera.
“But Rebecca remembers.””
The video continued.
“Claire has been trying to locate her daughter for years. The last address we had for Rebecca was in Ohio. She was living with a foster family after Michael disappeared.””
Mr. Bennett stopped the video.
“Ohio?””
Laura looked at him.
“Is Claire still looking for her?””
He nodded.
“She has never stopped.””
My father stood.
“Then we need to find Rebecca.””
Mr. Bennett looked at him.
“We will. But first, we need to understand why Michael wants Maya.””
He restarted the video.
Grandpa's expression had changed.
His eyes were wet.
“There's one more thing.””
He paused.
“Michael is not Maya's father. Richard is.””
My father looked offended.
“Why would he even suggest that?””
Grandpa continued.
“But Michael believes Maya is the key to recovering an asset that belonged to Thomas Reed. He has convinced himself that the original trust documents contain information about a hidden investment.””
Mr. Bennett nodded.
“That would explain his interest in the accounts.””
Grandpa leaned forward.
“However, the most important document is not in the trust file. It is in a sealed envelope held by Claire.””
Mr. Bennett frowned.
“Why Claire?””
“Because she witnessed the original agreement.””
The video ended with Grandpa looking directly at me.
“Maya, I want you to grow up knowing that you are loved. Not because of money. Not because of a name on a document. Not because of what anyone thinks you can provide.””
He smiled sadly.
“You are loved because you are you.””
The screen went black.
I wiped my cheeks.
For several moments, nobody spoke.
Then Mr. Bennett closed the laptop.
“I need to contact my sister.””
He stepped into the hallway.
My mother sat beside me.
She took my hand.
“I am so sorry.””
I looked at her.
“For what?””
“For every birthday I missed. Every school day. Every night you thought I had forgotten you.””
I shook my head.
“You didn't know.””
“But I should have kept looking.””
“You were told I was dead.””
She cried harder.
I leaned against her.
For the first time, I felt like I could remember something about her.
Not a photograph.
Not a story.
A feeling.
Her hand holding mine.
Her voice singing softly while she brushed my hair.
It was faint, but it was there.
My father approached.
“Maya?””
I didn't look up.
“Can I speak with you?””
“About what?””
“About what I did.””
I stared at the floor.
He sat in the chair opposite us.
“I don't expect you to forgive me.””
“Good.””
He nodded.
“I made decisions because I was afraid. Diane told me Laura was unstable. She told me the hospital believed Maya needed a different guardian. I wanted to believe someone else could handle everything.””
“You signed the papers.””
“Yes.””
“You didn't call Mom.””
“No.””
“You let Diane tell me she was dead.””
He swallowed.
“Yes.””
I finally looked at him.
“Why?””
His eyes filled.
“Because I was ashamed.””
I waited.
He continued.
“After I realized what had happened, I was afraid Laura would take you away. I was afraid Harold would expose me. I was afraid everyone would know what I had done.””
“So you stayed away?””
He nodded.
“I thought if I disappeared from your life, you would have a better chance of being safe.””
“That doesn't make sense.””
“I know.””
“You were supposed to protect me.””
He covered his face.
“I know.””
I turned away.
My mother put her arm around me.
Then Mr. Bennett returned.
His face was unusually pale.
“Claire is coming tomorrow morning.””
“Did she know about Rebecca?”” I asked.
“Yes. She has been searching for her for years.””
“Did she know about me?””
He nodded.
“She knew you existed. Harold sent her photographs.””
“Then why didn't she come?””
“Because she believed it would put Rebecca in danger.””
He took a breath.
“There's something else. Claire recognized the name Michael Carter immediately.””
“Why?””
“Because she received a message from him yesterday.””
My mother stood.
“What did it say?””
Mr. Bennett looked at me.
“It said that if Maya wanted to know the truth about her sister, she should come to an address in Ohio.””
I frowned.
“Why would I go there?””
“That's what I told Claire.””
He placed his phone on the desk.
There was a photograph attached to the message.
It showed a young woman standing outside a grocery store.
She had brown hair, dark eyes, and a small scar near her eyebrow.
Underneath it was a sentence.
*Rebecca wants to meet her sister.*
I stared at the photograph.
Then I noticed something in the background.
A man standing beside a black car.
A gray coat.
A familiar face.
Michael Carter.
“He's with her,” I whispered.
Mr. Bennett nodded.
“And that's why we're not going anywhere without the authorities.””
My mother pulled me closer.
But before anyone could say another word, my phone vibrated.
A new message had arrived.
Unknown number.
There was no greeting.
Only a photograph.
It showed Rebecca sitting in a room with a white wall behind her.
Her hands were folded in her lap.
A handwritten note was taped to the wall.
*MAYA, COME ALONE.*
May you like
And beneath it was another message.
*If you don't, Michael will tell you what really happened to your grandfather.*
