Chapter 9: The Name in the Ledger
Emergency lights flickered red across the archive.
I couldn't see Jason.
Couldn't see Maya.
Couldn't see anything except the white blur of Emily's stuffed rabbit disappearing into the darkness.
“Emily!”” I shouted.
A child's voice echoed from somewhere down the corridor.
“Daddy?””
My heart stopped.
I ran.
Maya shouted behind me.
“Daniel, wait!””
I didn't.
I followed the voice.
A door slammed.
I pushed it open.
Emily was there.
Five years old.
Barefoot.
Crying.
And someone was holding her.
Not Hale.
Not Jason.
Sarah.
She was standing by a service elevator, one arm around Emily.
“Sarah!””
She turned.
“I had no choice.””
“Let her go.””
“I can't.””
Emily reached for me.
“Daddy!””
I moved forward.
Sarah stepped back.
“Stay there.””
“What are you doing?””
“Saving her.””
“By taking her?””
“Hale will kill her.””
“Then give her to me.””
Sarah shook her head.
“You don't understand what she is.””
I looked at Emily.
“What she is?””
Sarah's eyes filled.
“The evidence.””
Maya appeared behind me.
“Sarah, step away from the child.””
Sarah shook her head.
“No.””
“Put Emily down.””
“I can't.””
Then Jason appeared in the doorway.
He was holding a gun.
He aimed it at Sarah.
“Give me the girl.””
I turned.
“Jason?””
His expression was empty.
“Daniel, move.””
Sarah screamed.
“No!””
Emily cried.
“Daddy, I'm scared.””
I stepped between them.
“Put the gun down.””
Jason's hand didn't move.
“You don't know what she carries.””
“What?””
“She has the key.””
Sarah shook her head.
“She doesn't.””
Jason laughed.
“Check her necklace.””
Emily had a small silver locket around her neck.
I had given it to her on her fifth birthday.
I reached for it.
Jason shouted.
“Don't!””
I opened it.
Inside was a memory card.
Maya stared.
“That's it.””
Jason's face changed.
“Give it to me.””
I closed the locket.
“No.””
“You don't understand.””
“Then explain.””
He lowered the gun slightly.
“The ledger isn't a book.””
“What is it?””
“A database.””
“Where?””
“On that card.””
Maya stepped closer.
“How does a five-year-old have it?””
Jason answered.
“Because Hale could never legally search her.””
I looked at Emily.
Her tiny fingers were clutching the rabbit.
“Hale planted all of this.””
“No.””
“Then who did?””
Jason's voice softened.
“Your father.””
I shook my head.
“My father died twelve years ago.””
“Not everything he did died with him.””
He stepped closer.
Sarah moved Emily behind her.
“You're not taking her.””
Jason raised the gun again.
“She's the last witness.””
I stared at him.
“You're working with Hale.””
Jason smiled.
“No.””
“Then why threaten my daughter?””
“Because I need her to remember.””
“Remember what?””
“That night.””
Emily looked at me.
“What night?””
Jason said, “The night your father rescued her mother.””
I felt something inside me shift.
My father's voice.
Anna's name.
The hidden room.
The ledger.
They were all connected.
I stepped toward Emily.
“Sweetheart, look at me.””
She did.
“Do you remember a man in a red tie?””
She nodded.
“Hale?””
She nodded again.
Sarah whispered, “Emily, don't.””
Emily looked at her.
“Mommy told me never to talk about him.””
Jason's eyes widened.
“You remember.””
Emily nodded.
“I remember the room.””
“What room?””
“The room with all the babies.””
Silence.
My stomach turned.
“How many?””
Emily held up five fingers.
“Five.””
Jason lowered the gun.
“That's enough.””
Emily looked at me.
“They had names on the wall.””
“What names?””
She whispered one.
“Anna.””
Then another.
“Daniel.””
I froze.
Maya looked at me.
Emily continued.
“Jason.””
Then she looked at Sarah.
“Mommy's name was there too.””
Sarah collapsed against the wall.
I stared at her.
“You knew.””
Sarah nodded through tears.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I was one of them.””
The service elevator dinged.
Doors opened.
Richard Hale stepped out.
He wasn't alone.
Two armed men stood behind him.
Hale smiled.
“Congratulations.””
He looked at Emily.
“She remembers everything.””
Then he looked directly at me.
“But there's one thing she still doesn't know.””
He took a folder from his coat.
Inside was a birth certificate.
He held it up.
“Daniel Carter,” he said softly.
May you like
Then he smiled.
“Your real name was never Daniel.””
