Chapter 8: The Boy in the Window
I stared at the photograph.
The man standing behind our family had my face.
Not similar.
Not close.
Mine.
Same jaw. Same crooked smile. Same scar above the left eyebrow.
Even the small tattoo on his wrist was identical.
My hands started shaking.
“Your twin?”” I whispered.
Anna nodded.
“He was born with you.””
Maya took the photograph from my hand.
“That isn't possible.””
Anna's eyes stayed on me.
“It is.””
I looked at Sarah.
She couldn't meet my eyes.
“You knew?””
She whispered, “Not everything.””
“That isn't an answer.””
“I knew there was another child.””
“My twin?””
“Yes.””
“You never told me.””
“I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“That if you remembered him, you'd start looking.””
“And what happens if I look?””
Sarah's face crumpled.
“He finds you.””
The room went silent.
Emily was still holding my hand.
I looked down at her.
“Who finds me?””
Sarah closed her eyes.
“Evan.””
The name meant nothing.
But when she said it, something inside me reacted.
A pressure behind my eyes.
A flash.
A little boy sitting across from me.
Two identical faces.
One laughing.
One crying.
A woman kneeling between us.
My father shouting from somewhere behind a door.
*Only one of you.*
I stumbled backward.
Anna caught me.
“You remember.””
“I saw him.””
“When?””
“When I was five.””
Anna nodded.
“You were always together.””
“Then why don't I remember?””
“Because they separated you.””
“Who?””
“Your father.””
I pulled away from her.
“No.””
“He chose which child to keep.””
The words hit like a gunshot.
“Why me?””
Anna looked toward the photograph.
“Because Evan was sick.””
“Sick?””
“He had the genetic marker they wanted.””
I frowned.
“Then wouldn't that make him more valuable?””
“Exactly.””
Maya looked sharply at her.
“They wanted him alive.””
Anna nodded.
“And they knew your father would do anything to save him.””
I shook my head.
“Then why take me?””
“Because you were the decoy.””
I felt sick.
“What?””
“They needed another child with the same DNA.””
Maya's eyes widened.
“They used Daniel as a substitute identity.””
“Yes.””
Anna touched the photograph.
“Evan was the child they wanted. You were the child they showed the world.””
I couldn't breathe.
“So every document—”
“Was built around you.””
“Every school record?””
“Fake.””
“My birth certificate?””
“Fake.””
“My adoption?””
“Real, but under the wrong identity.””
“My entire childhood…”
“Was constructed.””
I stared at Sarah.
“And you knew.””
Her voice was barely audible.
“I met you when you were twelve.””
“What?””
“Not for the first time.””
I looked at her.
“I don't understand.””
“You thought we met when we started college.””
“Yes.””
“We didn't.””
My head spun.
She took a trembling breath.
“I had seen you years before.””
“Where?””
“In the hospital.””
My stomach dropped.
“What hospital?””
“St. Vincent's.””
“The day Emily was born?””
“No.””
She looked at the photograph.
“The day Evan disappeared.””
Anna interrupted.
“You weren't supposed to tell him that.””
“I can't keep lying.””
Anna's eyes hardened.
“You already did.””
Sarah flinched.
I stepped between them.
“What happened at St. Vincent's?””
Sarah looked at me.
“You were there.””
“I don't remember.””
“You were five.””
“Again.””
“Yes.””
“Why was I at a hospital?””
“Because Evan was dying.””
I felt a cold weight in my chest.
“He needed a transplant.””
“Yes.””
“From me?””
Sarah nodded.
“They said your blood was compatible.””
Maya stepped closer.
“Are you saying they intended to take tissue from a five-year-old?””
Sarah's eyes filled.
“They intended to do much worse.””
I looked at her.
“What happened?””
“Your father found out.””
“Then what?””
“He came to the hospital.””
She paused.
“He took you.””
“Me?””
“Yes.””
“And Evan?””
“He tried to take him too.””
“What happened?””
Sarah swallowed.
“They caught him.””
“Who?””
“Blackwell.””
I thought of the blue room.
The screaming.
The smoke.
My father's hand.
The door.
And another child.
I whispered, “He left Evan.””
Sarah nodded.
“He couldn't get both of you out.””
Anna looked at the floor.
“He chose Danny.””
My chest tightened.
“Why?””
“Because Evan told him to.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
“Evan was already weak. He knew what they would do.””
Anna's voice broke.
“He told your father to take you.””
I closed my eyes.
For the first time, the memory became clear.
A boy who looked exactly like me.
His hand against the blue door.
His face wet with tears.
*Take Danny.*
Then my father's arms around me.
Then the door closing.
Then Evan screaming.
I opened my eyes.
“I left him.””
Anna shook her head.
“You were five.””
“I still left.””
“You didn't choose.””
I looked at her.
“Did he survive?””
Anna was silent.
Sarah did not answer.
I already knew.
“He survived,” Anna finally whispered.
My heart stopped.
“Where is he?””
“We don't know.””
“You just said he finds me.””
“I said he was looking for you.””
“Where is he now?””
Anna looked toward the farmhouse windows.
“He was here.””
I turned.
“What?””
“Tonight.””
Maya raised her weapon.
“Why didn't you tell us?””
“Because I didn't know whether he was friend or enemy.””
I walked toward the window.
Outside, rain blurred the yard.
Nothing moved.
Then I saw something.
A figure beneath the trees.
A man in a dark coat.
He was standing perfectly still.
Watching the house.
I whispered:
“Evan.””
The figure lifted one hand.
Not waving.
Pointing.
Toward the road.
Then a car exploded into the ditch.
Maya shoved me to the floor.
“DOWN!””
Glass shattered.
Sarah screamed.
The room filled with smoke.
Emily cried out.
I crawled toward her.
“Daddy!””
“I'm here!””
I pulled her under the table.
Gunfire erupted outside.
Maya fired through the window.
Anna grabbed Sarah.
“We have to go!””
I held Emily against my chest.
Another explosion shook the house.
The ceiling cracked.
“Move!””
We ran through the rear door.
Rain poured over us.
A vehicle was burning near the road.
The attackers were gone.
But Evan's figure was gone too.
Only footprints remained in the mud.
I crouched beside them.
One set led away from the house.
Another set led toward the woods.
A third set stopped beside the burning vehicle.
Maya looked at me.
“He may have saved us.””
“Or caused the explosion.””
Anna stared into the trees.
“He wouldn't hurt Emily.””
“Why are you so sure?””
“Because she's his niece.””
“That's not enough.””
Anna looked at me.
“You don't know Evan.””
“No.””
“But I do.””
“What happened to him?””
She swallowed.
“He spent twelve years believing you abandoned him.””
I felt the words in my chest.
“He's angry.””
“Yes.””
“At me?””
“No.””
“Then who?””
Anna's eyes hardened.
“At the people who taught him to hate you.””
The fire crackled behind us.
A shape appeared among the trees.
I raised my flashlight.
A man stepped forward.
He had my face.
But older.
Harder.
A scar crossed his cheek.
His eyes were fixed on me.
Emily whispered:
“Daddy…”
I stood slowly.
The man stared at me.
“Danny.””
My heart stopped.
I knew that voice.
The voice from the blue room.
The voice from my nightmares.
“You remember me,” he said.
I couldn't speak.
He smiled sadly.
“You left me.””
“I was five.””
“So was I.””
“I didn't choose.””
“No.””
He stepped closer.
“They chose for us.””
Anna moved between us.
“Evan.””
He looked at her.
“You're still protecting him.””
“He's our brother.””
“You always did that.””
“You don't know what happened.””
“I know exactly what happened.””
He looked at me again.
“Father took Danny.””
“He saved him.””
“He stole him.””
My phone vibrated.
A new message.
I looked down.
The sender was the unknown number.
*DON'T TRUST EVAN.*
Then another message appeared.
*HE DIDN'T SURVIVE THE BLUE ROOM.*
I looked up.
Evan was still standing in front of me.
Then the screen on my phone changed.
A photograph loaded.
It showed Evan strapped to a hospital bed.
Not five years old.
Not twelve.
Twenty-seven.
The photograph had been taken yesterday.
May you like
And written across the bottom was one sentence:
*THE MAN STANDING IN FRONT OF YOU IS NOT YOUR BROTHER.*
