Chapter 6: The Photograph Beneath the Floorboards

By the third morning after Grace's birth, I had learned to measure time in small victories.

Grace finished a feeding without tiring.

Her temperature remained stable.

The neonatal nurse told me that if her progress continued, we might soon be able to hold her for longer periods without the incubator.

I treasured every minute.

I also learned to recognize the sound of Samantha's footsteps in the corridor.

Whenever she arrived, I searched her face for answers.

Sometimes she brought documents.

Sometimes she brought questions.

That morning, she brought a photograph.

She placed it on the table beside my bed.

“Emily, I need you to look at this carefully.””

I picked it up.

It showed a younger Charles standing beside a man I recognized from an old family photograph.

Daniel Hart.

They were outside a brick office building, shaking hands beneath a company sign.

Between them stood a little girl with dark hair and a serious expression.

“Is this Rebecca?”” I asked.

“Yes.””

I studied the child's face.

“She looks frightened.””

“It's difficult to determine someone's emotions from a photograph.””

“I know what a frightened child looks like.””

Samantha didn't argue.

She turned the photograph over.

On the back, someone had written a date: September 14, 2019.

“Where did this come from?””

“It was found inside the blue ledger.””

I looked up.

“Why would Lucas keep a photograph of Daniel's family?””

“Because he believed Daniel's death was connected to the financial records he was investigating.””

I ran my finger along the photograph's edge.

“Did Lucas ever mention Rebecca?””

“No. But the investigators found a reference to her in one of the ledger's entries.””

“What kind of reference?””

“A payment described as a settlement.””

My stomach tightened.

“How much?””

“Forty thousand dollars.””

“To Rebecca?””

“We don't know. The recipient's account is no longer active, and the payment description doesn't identify the beneficiary.””

I set the photograph down.

“Every time we find something, there's another question.””

“I know.””

“Did my father pay her to disappear?””

“We cannot conclude that.””

“Did he threaten her?””

“We don't know.””

“Did she see something before Daniel died?””

Samantha folded her hands.

“That's why we need to speak with her.””

I looked toward Grace's incubator.

“Find her.””

“We're trying.””

“No. Don't just send letters and wait. Someone left me a note in a hospital room.

Someone is trying to make me ask questions about Daniel's daughter. I need to know whether Rebecca is in danger.””

Samantha's expression grew serious.

“I agree that her safety matters. We'll work through the appropriate channels and avoid exposing her location to anyone who might be involved.””

I nodded.

Then I picked up the photograph again.

There was something strange about the little girl's expression.

She wasn't looking at the camera.

She was looking at Charles.

And Charles wasn't looking at the photographer, either.

He was looking at Daniel.

The two men were smiling for the picture, but their eyes seemed fixed on each other with a tension that didn't belong in a family photograph.

I turned it over again.

“Why would Lucas hide this beneath the floorboards of his office?””

Samantha looked at me.

“Floorboards?””

I blinked.

“You said it was hidden in his office.””

“I said it was hidden behind a loose panel in his filing cabinet.””

I stared at her.

“Then where did this come from?””

Samantha's face changed.

She reached into her briefcase and removed another photograph.

It showed the inside of Lucas's office.

The filing cabinet stood against the wall.

Beside it, one section of the wooden floor had been lifted.

“We found this beneath the floorboards,” she said.

I looked from one photograph to the other.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because the investigators only discovered it this morning. The ledger was behind the filing cabinet. This photograph and several other items were hidden under the floor.””

“What other items?””

Samantha opened a sealed evidence sleeve.

Inside was a small brass key.

I recognized it immediately.

It had hung on Lucas's key ring for years, attached to a faded blue tag.

He had once told me it opened a storage unit he no longer used.

I had forgotten about it.

“Where did you find that?””

“Under the floorboards, alongside the photograph.””

I stared at the key.

“Lucas said it was for an old storage unit.””

“Do you know which one?””

“No. He never told me the number.””

Samantha wrote something down.

“We'll ask the investigators to trace the key. If it opens a storage unit, we won't enter it without the appropriate authorization and documentation.””

I leaned back against the pillows.

“What else was hidden there?””

She took out another sleeve.

This one contained a folded piece of paper.

Lucas's handwriting covered the front.

If Emily has found this, Charles has moved against her.

My throat tightened.

Samantha opened the sleeve carefully and read the note.

The ledger is only the beginning. The original evidence is somewhere Charles cannot access through his usual channels.

Do not confront him without protection.

Do not assume Courtney is acting alone.

And do not trust anyone who claims Daniel's death was an accident without examining the original case file.

I closed my eyes.

Lucas had known.

He had known that my father might come for the estate. He had known Courtney might be involved. He had known that Daniel's death had never been fully explained.

And he had tried to leave us a path toward the truth.

“Why didn't he tell me?”” I whispered.

Samantha sat beside me.

“I wish I knew.””

I stared at the note.

“Maybe he thought he could protect me by keeping me ignorant.””

“Maybe.””

“That doesn't make it easier.””

“No.””

For a long time, neither of us spoke.

Then my phone rang.

The number was unfamiliar.

Samantha gestured for me to wait while she checked the caller information. After a moment, she nodded.

“It's the investigator handling the repair shop. You can speak to him, but keep the conversation brief.””

I answered.

“Hello?””

“Mrs. Hart? My name is Detective Miller. I'm investigating the suspected tampering with your husband's vehicle.””

I sat upright.

“Yes.””

“We've confirmed that the vehicle identification number provided by Robert Mills matches your husband's car. We're also reviewing the original accident report.””

“Do you believe someone deliberately caused the crash?””

“We have grounds to investigate that possibility. We have not reached a final conclusion.””

I gripped the phone.

“What about Courtney?””

“Her alleged involvement is being examined. At this stage, we cannot disclose every detail of the investigation.””

“Was my father involved?””

“We are looking into the financial records and any communications connected to the alleged payment.””

I swallowed.

“Detective, my husband left a note saying that Daniel Hart's death might be connected to the same financial irregularities.””

There was a pause.

“Daniel Hart?””

“Yes.””

“Do you have that note?””

“My attorney has it.””

“Please make sure it is preserved. We would like to examine the original.””

“I'll arrange that.””

He hesitated.

“Mrs. Hart, I also need to ask whether anyone has attempted to contact you privately.””

I thought of the anonymous messages.

The note in my hospital room.

Courtney's visit.

“Yes.””

“Can you describe the contact?””

I told him about the messages and the handwritten note.

When I finished, his voice had become more serious.

“Do not respond to any further anonymous messages. Preserve them and notify us immediately.””

“Do you think someone is trying to intimidate me?””

“We cannot determine the sender's intent yet. But given the circumstances, we are treating the contact seriously.””

I ended the call and looked at Samantha.

“They think someone is trying to frighten me.””

“Then we will make sure they don't succeed.””

I looked at the brass key.

“Can we find the storage unit?””

“We'll try.””

“No,” I said.

“I want to know what Lucas was protecting.””

Samantha held my gaze.

“Then we will find it carefully.””

That afternoon, Grace was moved from the incubator to a warmer cot for a short period while the nurses monitored her progress.

I sat beside her, gently touching her fingers.

“Your daddy was a detective at heart,” I whispered.

“He could never leave a problem alone.””

Grace yawned.

I smiled through my tears.

“He would have loved you so much.””

A nurse approached to check the feeding chart.

“Your daughter is doing beautifully today.””

“Can I hold her?””

“Let's ask the neonatal team. If they approve, we'll help you.””

A few minutes later, Olivia brought Grace to me.

The moment my daughter settled against my chest, the world grew quiet.

Her warmth seeped through the blanket.

I kissed the top of her head.

“I have you,” I whispered.

“Whatever happens, I have you.””

For the first time since the porch, I felt something stronger than fear.

I felt responsibility.

Not the crushing responsibility Charles had always used to control me.

Something chosen.

Something I would protect.

Samantha returned while I was holding Grace.

“We have an update about the key.””

I looked up.

“The storage unit?””

“Yes. Investigators traced the key to a facility on the outskirts of town. The unit is registered under a business name connected to Lucas's company.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means Lucas may have rented it for business purposes, although the records are incomplete.””

“Can we go there?””

“Not today. The investigators are arranging lawful access and will document everything they find.””

I looked down at Grace.

“Will it take long?””

“I can't promise a timeline.””

I sighed.

“I'm tired of waiting.””

“I know.””

She pulled a chair close.

“Emily, there is something else we discovered in the estate records. Charles submitted a request to become the temporary administrator of Lucas's business before your father's alleged authorization was challenged.””

I frowned.

“Why would he do that?””

“His application claimed that Lucas's death left the company without adequate management and that you were unable to oversee its affairs.””

I felt my face grow hot.

“He's using my medical condition against me.””

“He is attempting to establish control over the business. We have challenged the request and supplied evidence that you have legal representation and that the estate's affairs are being managed.””

“Could he succeed?””

“Not automatically. The court will consider the relevant documents and legal requirements. But we need to respond promptly.””

I looked at Grace.

“He wants the house. He wants the company. He wants the trust.””

“He appears to be seeking control over several assets.””

“Why?””

Samantha was quiet.

Then she said, “I suspect the answer lies in what Lucas discovered.””

I looked at the photograph of Daniel and Charles.

“Then we need to find the original evidence.””

“We do.””

Samantha's phone rang.

She answered, listened, and slowly stood.

“Yes. I understand.””

She ended the call.

I watched her face.

“What happened?””

“The investigators have entered the storage unit.””

My pulse quickened.

“What did they find?””

“Several boxes of financial records, a laptop, and a sealed envelope addressed to you.””

I stared at her.

“Another letter?””

“Yes.””

“What's inside?””

“They haven't opened it yet. The envelope appears to have been sealed by Lucas, and they're documenting the contents before anything is disturbed.””

I looked at Grace.

“Can I see it?””

“Once it's been properly secured and the investigators approve its release.””

I swallowed.

“Is there anything else?””

Samantha hesitated.

“They also found a photograph of your father standing outside the repair shop on the night before Lucas's accident.””

The room seemed to tilt.

“Charles was there?””

“The photograph appears to show him near the building. Investigators are working to establish the date and circumstances.””

“Then he was involved.””

“Emily, we have a photograph that may place him near the shop. We do not yet know why he was there or what he knew about the alleged tampering.””

I looked at the picture of Daniel's daughter.

Then I looked at Grace.

My father had been near the repair shop before Lucas died.

Lucas had hidden financial records, a photograph, and a letter.

Someone had tried to take control of the estate.

And the woman who had signed the disputed authorization had allegedly paid the mechanic who tampered with the brakes.

It was no longer possible to dismiss these events as separate coincidences.

But I needed proof.

Real proof.

The kind that would survive my father's money, his lawyers, and his ability to make people doubt what they had seen.

“What's in the sealed envelope?”” I asked.

Samantha looked at me.

“We don't know yet.””

“Then find out.””

“I will.””

She stepped toward the door.

Before she left, I spoke again.

“Samantha?””

She turned.

“If Lucas knew he was in danger, why did he still drive that morning?””

Her expression softened.

“We don't know.””

I looked down at my daughter.

Maybe Lucas hadn't known the danger was immediate.

Maybe he had believed he could solve the problem before it reached our family.

Or maybe he had discovered something so urgent that he couldn't afford to wait.

I kissed Grace's forehead.

“Whatever you were trying to protect us from, Lucas,” I whispered, “I promise I'll finish it.””

At 6:12 p.m., Samantha returned with the sealed envelope.

The investigators had photographed it, documented its condition, and confirmed that it was addressed to me.

She placed it on the table.

My name was written across the front.

Beneath it, Lucas had added four words.

Read this only alone.

I stared at the envelope.

“Why would he write that?””

“Perhaps he intended the contents to be private.””

I looked at Samantha.

“Should I open it?””

“That is your decision. But I recommend preserving the envelope and its contents after you read it.””

My hands trembled as I broke the seal.

Inside was a folded letter and a small memory card.

I opened the letter first.

Emily,

If you've reached this point, then Charles has either taken action against the estate or something has happened that prevents me from explaining this to you myself.

I'm sorry.

I should have trusted you with the truth sooner.

The payments in the ledger are not all what they appear to be. Some were made to conceal the movement of money. Others were made because someone was threatening to expose a secret that could destroy several people.

I stopped reading.

Samantha remained silent.

I continued.

Daniel discovered that Charles had been diverting money through shell companies. Before he died, Daniel told me he had evidence. He said he had made copies and placed them somewhere no one would think to look.

I believed him.

After his death, the evidence disappeared. Charles insisted the case was closed. But the financial irregularities continued.

When I found the first transfer connected to Daniel's old company, I started investigating.

My throat tightened.

I did not tell you because I was afraid that if Charles learned how much I knew, he would come after you.

I thought keeping you out of it would keep you safe.

I was wrong.

Tears blurred the words.

I wiped my face and continued.

The memory card contains a recording. I have not included it in the ledger because I do not know who may have access to those files.

Listen to it before you decide what to do next.

And Emily, whatever you hear, remember that a recording is evidence to be examined, not a verdict by itself.

I love you.

Lucas.

I stared at the memory card.

“What is on it?””

Samantha shook her head.

“We don't know. The investigators should examine it using a forensic process that preserves the original data.””

I looked at her.

“Could it contain proof that my father arranged the accident?””

“Possibly. It could also contain information about the financial misconduct or Daniel's death.””

I held the card between my fingers.

For the first time, I understood why Lucas had hidden everything so carefully.

He hadn't been trying to leave me a fortune.

He had been trying to leave me the truth.

Samantha placed the letter and memory card into separate protective sleeves.

“I'll arrange for a forensic copy to be made and reviewed.””

I nodded.

“Don't let anyone alter it.””

“We won't.””

She began packing her briefcase.

Then she stopped.

“Emily, the investigators have also confirmed that Courtney used a company credit card to pay the repair shop.””

My breath caught.

“Her own card?””

“Yes.””

“Then she paid for the tampering.””

“It is significant evidence, but the investigators still need to establish what she intended and whether someone else directed her.””

I looked at the sealed sleeve.

Courtney had paid the mechanic.

Charles had been photographed near the shop.

Lucas had discovered concealed financial transfers.

And now I had a recording that might explain why.

Samantha's phone vibrated.

She glanced at the screen.

Then she looked at me.

“The forensic examiner has accessed a preliminary copy of the recording.””

I felt my heart hammer against my ribs.

“What does it say?””

Samantha swallowed.

“It's a conversation between your father and Courtney. It appears to have been recorded two nights before Lucas's accident.””

I gripped the edge of the table.

“Play it.””

“We need to verify the recording and establish its context.””

“Please, Samantha.””

She studied my face.

Then she took a breath.

“The examiner has transcribed the opening portion.””

She turned the screen toward me.

The first line was marked with a timestamp.

Charles's voice had been identified.

“If Lucas gives that ledger to the police, we're finished.””

Courtney's reply appeared beneath it.

“Then make sure he never gets the chance.””

I stared at the words.

The hospital room seemed to disappear around me.

For three weeks, I had mourned my husband as a victim of a tragic accident.

Now I was reading what appeared to be a conversation between the two people who had watched me lose everything.

I looked at Samantha.

“Does it continue?””

“Yes.””

“Then tell me what they said next.””

Samantha's face was pale.

She turned the screen toward herself and read the next line.

Then she stopped.

“What?”” I whispered.

She looked up at me.

“Emily, the next part changes what we thought we knew about Lucas's final morning.””

I reached for her hand.

“Read it.””

Samantha lowered her voice.

“Your father says, ‘The mechanic was supposed to frighten him, not kill him.’”

I felt the air leave my lungs.

Then she read Courtney's reply.

“You said Lucas would never make it to the police.””

And beneath that, in a different voice, someone else spoke.

May you like

A voice the forensic examiner had not yet identified.

“Neither of you understands what he found.””
