Chapter 3: The Woman Who Signed My Name

I didn't sleep that night.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Courtney standing in the hallway, watching my father drag me toward the front door. I heard her telling him that perhaps I needed a lesson.

Then I saw her signature beneath the document bearing my forged name.

By midnight, the contractions had become more frequent.

Dr. Patel returned to explain that the medical team was preparing for the possibility of an early delivery. Grace's heart rate was being monitored continuously, and they were watching for signs that labor was progressing too quickly.

“Your daughter is showing reassuring signs at the moment,” she told me.

“But we need to remain prepared.””

I nodded.

“Can I ask you something?””

“Of course.””

“If I have to deliver her tonight, will I be able to hold her?””

Dr. Patel pulled the chair closer.

“We'll do everything we safely can to help you meet her as soon as possible. Depending on how she does after birth, she may need some time in the neonatal unit.””

I looked down at my stomach.

“Her father was supposed to be here.””

The doctor didn't rush to fill the silence.

Instead, she placed a hand over mine.

“I know this isn't how you imagined it.””

“No,” I whispered.

“It isn't.””

After she left, I reached for the small photograph in my purse.

Lucas had taken it in our backyard two months before he died. I was sitting on the porch swing, laughing at something he had said, one hand resting on my stomach.

He had taken dozens of pictures that afternoon because he claimed he wanted to remember every version of me before Grace arrived.

I had complained that he was being ridiculous.

He had kissed my cheek and said, “One day, you'll thank me.””

Now the photograph was all I had of that afternoon.

I traced the edge of his face with my thumb.

“You knew something was wrong, didn't you?”” I whispered.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

There was no answer.

Only the soft hum of the medical equipment and the sound of footsteps passing outside my room.

At 1:17 a.m., my phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number appeared on the screen.

You need to stop listening to Samantha.

I sat up as much as the monitor cables allowed.

Another message arrived.

Lucas wasn't the man you thought he was.

My fingers went cold.

I typed a reply.

Who is this?

The response came almost immediately.

Someone who knows why he died.

I stared at the screen until the letters blurred.

Then I took a screenshot and sent it to Samantha.

She called within thirty seconds.

“Emily, don't reply to that number.””

“Who is it?””

“I don't know yet.””

“They said they know why Lucas died.””

“I saw the message. I've already sent the number to an investigator.””

“What if it's true?””

“Then we'll find out through evidence, not anonymous threats.””

My voice broke.

“What if Lucas was hiding something from me?””

Samantha paused.

“Emily, loving someone doesn't mean knowing every secret they have. It means being willing to face the truth when it finally comes.””

I pressed the phone to my chest.

“I don't know if I can do that.””

“You don't have to do everything tonight.””

I looked at Lucas's photograph.

“Yes, I do.””

At seven the next morning, Samantha returned with a new document folder and two cups of coffee.

She set one cup on the table beside my bed.

“I spoke with the police. They've recorded your account of the assault, and the hospital has documented your injuries. They'll arrange a formal statement when you're medically able.””

I nodded.

“What about the house?””

“It's still standing, Emily. Your father hasn't legally acquired it.””

“Has he tried?””

Samantha opened the folder.

“He contacted a real estate agent yesterday afternoon and asked for an expedited sale. The agent refused to proceed without verified ownership and authorization.””

A small breath escaped me.

“So he can't just sell it.””

“Not without the proper legal authority. I've notified the relevant parties that the trust is disputed and that any attempted transfer must be reviewed.””

“Can we stop him from entering the house?””

“We can seek appropriate protective measures. We are also arranging for the property to be secured and for Lucas's office to be preserved.””

I glanced at the folder.

“What about Courtney?””

Samantha took out a printed copy of the disputed authorization.

“She has been named as a witness to your supposed signature.””

“Can we prove she knew it was fake?””

“Not yet. A signature alone doesn't establish what she knew. But we can examine the circumstances, her communications, and the document's history.””

I rubbed my forehead.

“She was standing there when my father threw me out.””

“I know.””

“She watched him hurt me.””

“I know, Emily.””

“And she signed that paper.””

Samantha's expression hardened.

“If she knowingly participated in a scheme to obtain control of the trust, she may face serious consequences. But we'll establish the facts before making accusations.””

I looked toward the window.

“I want to see the house.””

“Not today.””

“I need to get Lucas's ledger.””

“We'll arrange for it to be retrieved securely.””

“What if my father finds it first?””

“He doesn't know where it is.””

I stared at her.

“How can you be sure?””

Samantha hesitated.

“Because the letter says Lucas wanted you to find it.””

“That doesn't mean Charles doesn't know about it.””

“No. It doesn't.””

She closed the folder.

“Which is why we're going to treat the property as potentially compromised.””

Before I could respond, a nurse entered and asked Samantha to step outside for a moment.

The doctor wanted to speak with me about my labor.

When Samantha returned, her face had changed.

“What happened?”” I asked.

“Your father has arrived at the hospital.””

My heart began to pound.

“Why?””

“He says he wants to see you.””

I shook my head immediately.

“No.””

“You don't have to see him.””

“Did he come alone?””

Samantha looked at her phone.

“No.””

I already knew the answer.

“Courtney?””

“Yes.””

I gripped the bedrail.

“Tell them to leave.””

“I will.””

But before Samantha could reach the door, it opened.

Charles walked in.

He was wearing the same dark suit from the day before, although his tie was crooked and his eyes were bloodshot. Courtney followed him carrying a large bouquet of white roses.

For one strange second, I thought she had brought them as an apology.

Then she placed them on the windowsill without looking at me.

Charles approached the bed.

“Emily.””

I turned my face away.

“Get out.””

“Please. Just let me explain.””

“You had plenty of time to explain before you dragged me out of my home.””

His jaw tightened.

“I was angry. I shouldn't have handled things that way.””

“You shouldn't have touched me at all.””

Courtney stepped forward.

“Emily, your father is devastated by what happened.””

I stared at her.

“Then why are you here?””

She looked wounded.

“Because we're family.””

“You signed a document claiming I gave Charles permission to sell the estate.””

Her expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“I don't know what you're talking about.””

Samantha took the document from her folder.

“Your signature is on the witness line.””

Courtney glanced at the page.

Then she looked at Charles.

He spoke before she could answer.

“This is a misunderstanding. Courtney witnessed a document that was presented to her as legitimate.””

“By whom?”” Samantha asked.

Charles stiffened.

“What?””

“You've just said she was presented with the document as legitimate. Who presented it to her?””

Charles's mouth opened, then closed.

Courtney crossed her arms.

“This is ridiculous. I don't have to answer questions from you.””

“Not here,” Samantha replied.

“But you may be asked to answer them through the proper legal process.””

My father pulled a chair toward the bed.

“Emily, listen to me. I am trying to protect you.””

I laughed, but the sound came out broken.

“Protect me from what?””

“From the debts Lucas left behind.””

“Then show me the debts.””

“It's complicated.””

“Show me.””

He looked at Samantha.

“She has no idea what she's getting into.””

Samantha remained calm.

“Then provide the supporting records.””

Charles leaned forward.

“The estate has liabilities that could swallow everything. I was trying to settle the situation before creditors came knocking.””

“Which creditors?”” Samantha asked.

He ignored her.

“Emily, you have a baby coming. You cannot afford to fight me on this.””

My hands curled around the blanket.

“You keep talking about my baby as if she's a problem you have to manage.””

“That's not what I meant.””

“Then what did you mean?””

He looked at me, and for a moment I saw something beneath his anger.

Fear.

Not concern for me.

Fear of what I might discover.

“You don't understand what Lucas was involved in,” he said.

Samantha stepped between us.

“That's enough. Emily is receiving medical care. You need to leave.””

Charles rose.

“You can't keep me from my own daughter.””

“Emily has asked you to leave. I am asking you to respect that.””

He pointed at Samantha.

“You think you're protecting her? You're turning her against her family.””

I looked straight at him.

“You did that yourself.””

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Courtney picked up her handbag.

“We're leaving,” she said sharply.

Charles turned toward her.

“Not yet.””

She stared at him.

“Charles.””

“Not yet.””

Something passed between them.

A warning.

A question.

I couldn't tell which.

Finally, my father leaned toward me.

“You have until the end of the week to stop this nonsense. After that, I won't be able to protect you from the consequences.””

I felt the baby move beneath my hand.

“Get out.””

His face darkened.

“You'll regret this.””

Samantha opened the door.

“Mr. Hart, leave now.””

Charles walked out.

Courtney followed, but just before she crossed the threshold, she turned toward me.

Her expression was no longer amused.

It was cold.

“You really have no idea what your husband did, do you?””

Samantha stepped forward.

“Courtney, don't.””

Courtney ignored her.

“Ask yourself why Lucas needed a secret ledger. Ask yourself why he was so afraid of your father.””

My breath caught.

“What are you talking about?””

She smiled faintly.

“Maybe your husband wasn't the innocent man you think he was.””

Then she walked out.

Samantha shut the door.

I stared at her.

“Do you think she's telling the truth?””

“I think she's trying to frighten you.””

“But what if—”

“Emily, we will examine every piece of evidence. If Lucas made mistakes, we'll face them. If someone is lying, we'll establish that, too.””

I wanted to believe her.

But the anonymous message still sat on my phone.

Someone who knows why he died.

And Lucas's letter had warned me not to give the blue ledger to Charles.

I looked at Samantha.

“I want to see that ledger today.””

She studied my face.

“I'll arrange for a secure retrieval.””

“No. I want to know what's inside it.””

“Then we'll examine it together.””

A sharp pain suddenly tightened across my abdomen.

I gasped and grabbed the bedrail.

Samantha stood immediately.

“Emily?””

The monitor began to beep faster.

A nurse rushed in, followed by Dr. Patel.

“Emily, look at me,” the doctor said.

“Tell me where the pain is.””

“Everywhere,” I whispered.

“Something's wrong.””

Dr. Patel checked the monitor and exchanged a quick look with the nurse.

“We're going to move you to the delivery area. Your contractions have intensified.””

I gripped Samantha's hand.

“Please don't leave me.””

“I won't.””

As the medical team began preparing the bed, I looked toward the window.

The white roses Courtney had brought were reflected in the glass.

For the first time, I understood something I hadn't wanted to admit.

My father and Courtney hadn't come to apologize.

They had come to find out what I knew.

And whatever Lucas had hidden in that blue ledger was dangerous enough to make them afraid.

Thirty minutes later, Samantha's phone rang.

She stepped into the corridor to answer it while a nurse prepared my medication.

I watched her through the open doorway.

At first, she simply listened.

Then her shoulders stiffened.

She asked the caller to repeat something.

A moment later, she turned toward me.

Her face had gone pale.

“Samantha?”” I called.

“What happened?””

She ended the call and came back into the room.

“The person securing your house has found the blue ledger.””

I struggled to sit up.

“Where?””

“In Lucas's office, hidden behind a loose panel in the bottom of his filing cabinet.””

“Is it safe?””

“We have it secured.””

“Then what is wrong?””

Samantha hesitated.

“The ledger contains records of payments made from Lucas's company to an account controlled by Charles.””

My mouth went dry.

“How much?””

She looked down at her phone.

“Over the last eighteen months, the total is just under two million dollars.””

I stared at her.

“My father stole two million dollars from Lucas?””

“We don't know that yet. The entries could have more than one explanation, and we'll need the underlying bank records. But the transfers appear to have been concealed.””

I felt the room spin.

“Why would Lucas pay my father?””

“We're going to find out.””

Samantha's phone vibrated again.

She looked at the screen, and the color drained from her face.

“What now?”” I whispered.

She turned the phone toward me.

It was a photograph of a page from the ledger.

Beneath the list of transfers, Lucas had written a sentence in his own handwriting.

If Charles discovers that I know what happened to Daniel, he will do anything to keep the truth buried.

I stared at the words.

“Who is Daniel?””

Samantha slowly lowered the phone.

“Emily, I need to tell you something about your husband's accident.””

Before she could continue, the doctor called my name.

Grace's heart rate had changed, and the medical team needed to prepare for delivery.

Samantha took my hand.

“We'll talk as soon as you're stable.””

I squeezed her fingers.

“No. Tell me now.””

She looked toward the monitor, then back at me.

“Daniel Hart was your father's business partner before Lucas ever started his company.””

My blood turned cold.

“Was?””

Samantha swallowed.

“He died in a car accident seven years ago.””

I stared at her, unable to breathe.

Seven years ago, my father had told our family that Daniel had been driving drunk.

He had said there was nothing anyone could have done.

He had said the police found no reason to suspect foul play.

And now Lucas's ledger suggested that my father had spent eighteen months paying someone nearly two million dollars while hiding records of those transactions.

I looked at Samantha.

“Are you saying my father killed Daniel?””

“No,” she said firmly.

“I'm saying Lucas believed there was something about Daniel's death that needed investigating. We cannot conclude anything beyond that without evidence.””

The doctor called for the delivery team.

A nurse adjusted my bed and told me to focus on breathing.

But I could no longer stop thinking about the words in Lucas's handwriting.

He will do anything to keep the truth buried.

My father had thrown me out of my own home.

He had tried to take my daughter's inheritance.

He had forged my signature—or someone had done so on his behalf.

And my husband, before he died, had left behind a warning about a man who had supposedly been dead for seven years.

Then Samantha leaned close to me.

“There is one more thing I found in the ledger.””

I turned toward her.

“What?””

She looked as though she wished she didn't have to tell me.

“Three days before Lucas's accident, someone made a payment from Charles's account to a vehicle repair shop.””

My breath stopped.

“Why would that matter?””

“Because the payment was made the morning before Lucas's brakes failed.””

The room fell silent around me.

I stared at Samantha.

For a moment, I couldn't hear the monitor, the nurses, or the doctor giving instructions.

All I could hear was Lucas's voice from three weeks earlier, telling me he would be home before dinner.

May you like

And suddenly, the question wasn't whether my father had betrayed me.

It was whether the man who had raised me had arranged for my husband to die.
