Chapter 6: The Witness in the Shadows

I read the message five times.

The words didn’t change.

I’m sorry, Tessa.

But Mom and Dad are coming for you tonight.

My first instinct was fear.

My second was anger.

They had already taken everything from me.

My home.

My family.

My trust.

What else could they possibly take?

Detective Voss immediately moved closer.

“Let me see.””

I handed him the phone.

He studied the screen.

“Can you trace the number?””

“Already trying,” Bridget said.

She was typing rapidly on her laptop.

My hands clenched.

“Why tonight?””

Nobody answered.

Because we all knew.

They weren’t coming to apologize.

They were coming because they were scared.

And scared people did dangerous things.

The hospital suddenly felt smaller.

Every sound made me look toward the door.

Every shadow felt like someone watching.

Detective Voss called for additional security.

Bridget stayed beside me.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at her.

“For what?””

“For not telling you everything.””

I was quiet.

“I trusted you.””

“I know.””

“That’s why it hurt.””

She nodded.

“I understand.””

Outside, snow continued falling.

The same kind of night when my family left me behind.

Only now I wasn’t alone.

A few minutes later, Detective Voss returned.

“The number is blocked.””

“Can you find the sender?””

“Not yet.””

I looked at the message again.

There was something strange.

“They didn’t say ‘they’re coming.’”

Detective Voss looked at me.

“They said ‘Mom and Dad are coming.’”

“Yes.””

I pointed at the screen.

“Whoever sent this knows how they talk.””

Bridget frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“My parents never called themselves Mom and Dad when they were angry.””

I swallowed.

“Only Emma did.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Bridget whispered:

“Emma.””

A knock came from the door.

Everyone froze.

The handle moved.

Detective Voss reached for his weapon.

The door opened slowly.

A nurse stepped inside.

“Sorry. There’s someone downstairs asking for Detective Voss.””

“Who?””

The nurse looked nervous.

“She wouldn’t give her name.””

Detective Voss exchanged a glance with Bridget.

“I’ll check.””

“No,” I said.

Everyone looked at me.

I didn’t know why, but something inside me screamed.

“Don’t leave.””

Detective Voss studied my face.

Then nodded.

The nurse stepped aside.

A voice came from the hallway.

“Tessa?””

My heart stopped.

I knew that voice.

Emma.

She stepped into the doorway.

But she looked different.

No makeup.

No perfect hair.

No confident smile.

Just a scared girl holding herself together.

Detective Voss immediately moved between us.

“Hands where I can see them.””

Emma raised them.

“I’m not here to hurt her.””

I stared at my sister.

The same person who recorded my pain.

The same person who walked away.

The same person who might have just saved my life.

“Why are you here?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I need to tell you the truth.””

I almost laughed.

“Now?””

She flinched.

“I deserve that.””

“Yes.””

She looked down.

“I know.””

For the first time in years, Emma looked like my little sister again.

And somehow that made it worse.

Because I remembered loving her.

“I watched the video,” I said.

Her face collapsed.

“I know.””

“You laughed.””

Tears fell from her eyes.

“I know.””

“Why?””

She looked at me.

And the answer she gave was the last thing I expected.

“Because Dad told me if I didn’t, he would make sure you died.””

Silence.

Detective Voss narrowed his eyes.

“Explain.””

Emma wiped her face.

“Dad knew Tessa had evidence. He knew she was going to expose him.””

She looked at me.

“He told me to record everything.””

My stomach twisted.

“I still don’t understand.””

Emma stepped closer.

“I thought if I did what he wanted, I could protect you.””

I stared at her.

“You hurt me to protect me?””

Her tears fell faster.

“I know how that sounds.””

“It sounds insane.””

“I know.””

The room went quiet.

Then Emma reached into her coat.

Detective Voss immediately reacted.

But she pulled out a small envelope.

“I found this in Dad’s office.””

She handed it to me.

I opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

My family.

Years ago.

Me.

Emma.

My parents.

We were smiling.

On the back of the photo was handwriting.

My father’s handwriting.

A sentence that made my blood run cold.

When Tessa learns the truth, remove the problem permanently.

I looked up.

Emma whispered:

“That was written two years ago.””

Nobody moved.

Because suddenly the question wasn’t whether my family planned to destroy me.

It was how long they had been planning it.

Then Detective Voss’s phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed immediately.

“What happened?””

A pause.

Then:

“Are you sure?””

He looked at me.

“Tessa…”

My heart stopped.

“What?””

He slowly lowered the phone.

“Your father just reported Emma missing.””

Emma went pale.

“That’s impossible.””

Detective Voss stared at her.

“He also reported that you were dangerous.””

The room went silent.

Because I finally understood.

My father didn’t just want to destroy me.

He wanted to destroy anyone who could prove I was telling the truth.

And Emma had just become his next target.

Then the hospital lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

And my phone received another message.

This time, from my father.

You should have stayed quiet.

May you like

A second message appeared beneath it.

Now I’m going to make sure nobody believes either of you.
