Chapter 5: The Woman Who Knew Too Much

The silence after my mother left felt heavier than any argument.

I looked at Bridget.

She looked back at me.

Neither of us spoke.

Finally, Detective Voss broke the silence.

“Bridget.””

Her eyes closed briefly.

“I was hoping she wouldn’t use that.””

My stomach dropped.

“Use what?””

Bridget sat down slowly.

“Tessa, there are things I didn’t tell you because I was trying to protect you.””

I laughed quietly.

Protect me.

Everyone kept saying that.

My family said they protected me.

My mother said she protected me.

My father said he protected the company.

And now Bridget.

The word had started to lose meaning.

“Tell me the truth.””

She nodded.

“I found the first evidence because someone sent it to me.””

“Who?””

She hesitated.

I felt my heartbeat increase.

“Emma.””

The room went completely still.

“No.””

Bridget looked down.

“Yes.””

I shook my head.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“I know.””

“Emma filmed me being attacked.””

“I know.””

“She helped them.””

“I know.””

I pushed the blanket away.

“Then why?””

Bridget looked at the floor.

“Because Emma has been trying to escape your father for months.””

I stared at her.

“That’s impossible.””

“Is it?””

The question bothered me.

Because I remembered Emma’s face.

Not just the cruelty.

Something else.

Fear.

Hidden underneath the laughter.

Bridget opened a file.

“Your sister contacted me anonymously three months ago.””

She handed me a printed email.

The sender was unknown.

The message was short.

I read it.

If anything happens to Tessa Vale, check the company records. My father is not who people think he is.

My fingers shook.

“She sent this?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did she do what she did?””

Bridget’s expression was painful.

“Because she was trapped.””

I looked away.

I didn’t want to hear it.

Not yet.

Because understanding someone’s pain did not erase what they did.

Emma still watched me suffer.

Emma still laughed.

“She had choices.””

“Yes,” Bridget said quietly.

“And she made the wrong ones.””

That was the first thing someone said that felt honest.

Detective Voss leaned against the wall.

“Where is Emma now?””

Bridget looked at him.

“She disappeared.””

“When?””

“After the video was uploaded.””

My stomach tightened.

“Uploaded?””

Bridget froze.

I noticed.

“What?””

She looked at Detective Voss.

Then back at me.

“The video was not only recorded.””

A cold feeling spread through my body.

“What are you saying?””

“Someone sent it.””

“Who?””

She didn’t answer.

Detective Voss checked his phone.

Then his face changed.

“What?””

He turned the screen toward us.

An email notification.

Unknown sender.

Subject line:

The truth your family buried.

My heart raced.

“Open it.””

Detective Voss hesitated.

Then clicked.

A video appeared.

Not Emma’s video.

Something else.

The camera showed my father’s office.

Late at night.

My father was sitting behind his desk.

Across from him was Emma.

She looked terrified.

“I can’t keep doing this,” she said.

My father leaned back.

“You don’t have a choice.””

“Yes, I do.””

“No, Emma. You really don’t.””

The recording continued.

My father placed a folder on the desk.

“You know what happens if people find out.””

Emma looked at the folder.

“What did you do?””

My father smiled.

The same smile I had seen when he lied to reporters.

The same smile that never reached his eyes.

“I fixed a problem.””

Emma’s voice shook.

“Tessa isn’t a problem.””

My father leaned forward.

“She became one.””

I stopped breathing.

Then he said something that changed everything.

“She was never supposed to find the records.””

Detective Voss paused the video.

“Who sent this?””

Nobody knew.

But I did.

I knew because there was one person who would want my father exposed.

One person who had been afraid enough to contact Bridget.

One person who had been silent too long.

“Emma.””

Bridget looked at me.

“You think she sent it?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

I stared at the frozen image of my father.

“Because she finally realized what happens when you help a monster.””

The video resumed.

My father stood up.

The audio became clearer.

“You’ll do what I tell you.””

Emma looked up.

“And if I don’t?””

My father smiled.

“Then I’ll tell everyone you were the one who filmed your sister.””

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Because suddenly the story was different.

My sister was not innocent.

But she wasn’t free either.

And my father had been holding something over her.

Detective Voss stood.

“We need to find Emma before your father does.””

A loud sound interrupted him.

My phone.

The screen lit up.

A message.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

I stared at it.

My blood went cold.

May you like

Because the person who sent it knew something nobody else knew.

I’m sorry, Tessa. But Mom and Dad are coming for you tonight.
