Chapter 6: The Last Secret Emma Left Behind

I didn't remember leaving Daniel's office.
I remembered the photograph.
Emma's face.
Her smile.
And Ethan standing beside her.
The date on the picture was three days before she died.
I had spent four years believing Emma's final days had been peaceful.
I remembered holding her hand in the hospital.
I remembered her telling me to take care of Lily.
I remembered promising.
But I also remembered something else.
The night before she died, she had asked me to remove Vanessa from the hospital room.
I hadn't understood why.
Vanessa had been sitting beside the window, scrolling through her phone.
Emma had looked at her.
Then at me.
"Marcus, can I speak to you alone?""
Vanessa had smiled.
"Of course.""
She left.
Emma held my hand.
"Don't let anyone make decisions about Lily without you.""
I kissed her forehead.
"Nobody will.""
She looked toward the door.
"Promise me.""
"I promise.""
Then she closed her eyes.
At the time, I had thought she was frightened about leaving us.
Now I wondered what she had been trying to tell me.
I drove home with the photograph on the passenger seat.
Lily was watching a cartoon when I entered.
She looked up.
"Daddy!""
I smiled.
"Hey, sweetheart.""
She ran toward me.
I caught her.
"Did you sleep well?""
She nodded.
"I had breakfast.""
"Good.""
"And I didn't make a mess.""
I held her at arm's length.
"You don't have to tell me that.""
She looked confused.
I kissed her forehead.
"You can make as many messes as you want. That's what homes are for.""
She smiled.
A real smile.
Small.
But real.
We made pancakes together.
She stood on a chair and stirred the batter while I heated the pan.
She spilled flour across the counter.
Then she looked at me.
I waited.
She slowly reached for the cloth.
I gently took it from her hand.
"Let's eat first.""
She stared at the mess.
"But—"
"I'll clean it.""
"Really?""
"Really.""
She watched me for several seconds.
Then she returned to stirring.
That simple moment nearly broke me.
After breakfast, I called Daniel.
"I need everything Emma left behind.""
"All the documents?""
"Everything. Letters, recordings, photographs, notes. Anything she gave you.""
"I'll prepare a file.""
"And I need the investigator's contact details.""
"I'll send them.""
I ended the call.
Then I checked my messages.
There was one from Ethan.
Meet me at the old railway café. 4 p.m. Come alone.
I stared at it.
Come alone.
I didn't like that.
I called him.
No answer.
I sent a message asking whether he could meet somewhere public with security nearby.
His response came immediately.
No. Vanessa has people watching.
I felt my stomach tighten.
I looked outside.
A black sedan was parked across the street.
Its engine was running.
I watched it for nearly a minute.
Then it drove away.
I took a photograph of the license plate.
I didn't tell Lily.
Instead, I called a friend from the police department and explained the situation.
He advised me not to confront anyone and to keep all communications documented.
At 3:30 p.m., I arranged for Lily to stay with a trusted family friend while I met Ethan.
Before leaving, I sat beside her.
"I have to meet someone.""
She looked worried.
"Are you going away?""
"No, sweetheart. I'll be back.""
She held my hand.
"Can you show me your phone?""
I smiled.
"Why?""
"So I can call you.""
I unlocked it and showed her my number.
She practiced pressing the green call button.
Then she handed it back.
"Okay.""
I kissed her forehead.
"I'll be back before dinner.""
The railway café hadn't changed much.
The wooden tables were scratched.
The coffee machine made the same terrible noise.
A little bell rang whenever someone entered.
I arrived ten minutes early.
At 4:07 p.m., a man walked through the door.
He wore a dark jacket and a baseball cap.
His face was thinner.
There were lines around his eyes.
But when he removed the cap, I knew.
"Ethan.""
He stopped.
For a moment, neither of us moved.
Then he crossed the room.
I stood.
He grabbed my shoulders.
I grabbed his.
And suddenly, I was holding my brother.
The brother I had buried in my mind.
The brother I had mourned.
The brother I had failed to find.
"You're alive," I whispered.
He nodded.
"Yeah.""
I pulled back.
"Where have you been?""
He looked toward the window.
"Running.""
"From Vanessa?""
"From the people she hired.""
I stared.
"Tell me everything.""
Ethan sat down.
He ordered coffee.
Then he placed a small envelope on the table.
"Emma gave me this before she died.""
I opened it.
Inside was a photograph of Lily as a toddler.
On the back, Emma had written:
If something happens to me, make sure Marcus knows the truth.
I looked up.
"What truth?""
Ethan leaned forward.
"Vanessa didn't enter your life by accident.""
I frowned.
"What does that mean?""
"She knew about Emma's inheritance before you married her.""
I stared.
"How?""
"She worked for a financial firm that handled some of the property transactions. She had access to records showing Emma's assets.""
I shook my head.
"That's impossible. Vanessa was introduced to me by a colleague.""
"That colleague was being paid.""
I felt sick.
Ethan opened his bag.
He removed a stack of printed emails.
"Emma discovered the connection. She hired someone to investigate Vanessa.""
I scanned the pages.
There were payments.
Messages.
Photographs.
One email contained a sentence that made my blood run cold.
Marcus is emotionally vulnerable. His wife's illness has made him protective of Lily. Establish trust before approaching him.
I looked at Ethan.
"She targeted me?""
He nodded.
"She wanted access to the trust.""
"Why didn't Emma tell me?""
"She tried.""
I stared at him.
"She told me nothing.""
"Because Vanessa was monitoring your communications.""
I shook my head.
"No.""
Ethan leaned forward.
"Marcus, Emma found out that Vanessa had been accessing your business accounts. She also found transfers that didn't match the company records.""
I looked at the papers.
"How much?""
"More than you know.""
I felt my hands shaking.
"Why didn't you report it?""
"I tried.""
"What happened?""
Ethan looked down.
"Vanessa found out.""
He told me that he had been preparing to meet Emma and give her copies of the financial records when his car was forced off the road.
He survived.
But someone removed his identification and personal belongings before the emergency services arrived.
A false identification had been used to report his death.
He spent months recovering in another state.
When he tried contacting me, his calls were intercepted.
When he wrote letters, they never reached my house.
"How do you know Vanessa was involved?""
He pulled out a photograph.
It showed a man standing beside the wrecked vehicle.
The man was Derek.
I stared.
"That's him.""
Ethan nodded.
"He was the one who arranged the accident.""
I felt my stomach turn.
"And Vanessa?""
"She paid him.""
I looked at the photograph again.
The same Derek who had been sitting beside my wife.
The same man who had hit my daughter.
I wanted to tear the paper apart.
Instead, I placed it carefully on the table.
"Why did you wait so long?""
Ethan's face changed.
"I didn't.""
He reached into his jacket and removed a folded letter.
It was addressed to me.
The handwriting was Emma's.
I recognized it immediately.
"She wrote this?""
"Yes.""
"Why do you have it?""
"Because she told me to give it to you when you were ready to believe the truth.""
I opened the letter.
Marcus,
If you're reading this, I hope you and Lily are safe.
I know you love Vanessa. I know you believe she is good for our family.
I wish I could tell you that I am mistaken.
But I found documents proving she has been moving money from the company and trying to gain access to Lily's inheritance.
Ethan has copies.
Please listen to him.
There is one thing I haven't told you.
I stopped.
The next paragraph was underlined.
The money isn't the only reason Vanessa wants custody of Lily.
I looked up.
"What does that mean?""
Ethan shook his head.
"I don't know everything.""
I read the next lines.
There is a second account connected to the trust. It was established before Lily was born. I discovered that someone has been trying to access it using documents that contain my name.
My heart began pounding.
I turned the page.
If Vanessa succeeds, she will have control of something Lily cannot inherit until she turns eighteen.
At the bottom was a final sentence.
Ask Daniel about the sealed envelope.
I looked at Ethan.
"Daniel told me Vanessa collected an envelope three months ago.""
Ethan nodded.
"That's what she was looking for.""
"What was inside?""
He shook his head.
"Emma never told me.""
I sat back.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then Ethan reached into his bag again.
He removed a small flash drive.
"This is what I managed to recover.""
I took it.
"What's on it?""
"Bank records. Emails. Audio recordings.""
"From Vanessa?""
"Some.""
"From Derek?""
"Yes.""
I looked toward the window.
The black sedan was back.
Parked across the street.
Ethan noticed my expression.
"Don't look at it.""
"Someone's watching us.""
"I told you.""
I lowered my voice.
"Who?""
"One of Derek's associates.""
I reached for my phone.
Ethan caught my wrist.
"Don't.""
"Why?""
"Because I need you to understand something.""
He leaned closer.
"Vanessa isn't the person you should be most worried about.""
I stared at him.
"What are you talking about?""
He took a folded photograph from his pocket.
It showed Vanessa standing outside a courthouse.
Beside her was a man in a dark suit.
I recognized him immediately.
He was the family lawyer who had handled Emma's estate.
Mr. Whitmore.
The man who had explained the trust.
The man who had witnessed the original documents.
The man who had assured me that everything was secure.
I looked at Ethan.
"Why is he with Vanessa?""
Ethan's face hardened.
"Because he helped her forge the documents.""
I felt the blood drain from my face.
"Are you sure?""
"I have proof.""
He pushed the flash drive toward me.
"There's something else on here. Something Emma recorded shortly before she died.""
I picked it up.
"What did she say?""
Ethan looked directly into my eyes.
"She said Vanessa had been trying to get close to Lily's mother for years.""
I frowned.
"Emma's mother?""
He shook his head.
"No.""
He paused.
"Vanessa was trying to get close to Lily herself.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"What?""
Ethan leaned forward.
"Marcus, there's a reason Emma was so frightened before she died.""
I stared at him.
He took a breath.
"Vanessa knew something about Lily's birth that neither you nor Emma knew.""
I couldn't speak.
Then he said the words that destroyed everything I thought I understood about my family.
"Marcus, Emma suspected Lily wasn't the only child connected to that inheritance.""
My phone vibrated.
A message from the family friend looking after Lily.
I opened it.
*Marcus, Lily is asking for you. She says someone called the house and asked to speak to her.*
A second message arrived.
*The caller said her real name was different.*
I looked at Ethan.
He stood immediately.
"Marcus, we need to leave.""
I called the family friend.
She answered on the first ring.
"What's happened?""
Her voice was shaking.
"Marcus, a woman called. She said she was Lily's biological aunt.""
I gripped the phone.
"Did she give you her name?""
"Yes.""
"Who?""
A pause.
Then she answered.
"Vanessa.""
I stared at Ethan.
He had gone completely pale.
May you like
And for the first time since I found him, my brother looked genuinely terrified.
"Marcus," he whispered, "don't let Vanessa get anywhere near Lily.""
