Chapter 5: The Brother Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

I read the name three times.
Ethan Reed.
My younger brother.
For four years, I had believed he was dead.
I remembered the phone call.
It had come shortly after Emma's funeral.
A police officer had contacted me and said Ethan had been involved in a serious accident outside Portland.
His vehicle had caught fire.
The remains had been identified through documents and personal belongings found at the scene.
I had been devastated.
But I had also been dealing with Emma's death, Lily's grief, and a business that was close to collapsing.
Vanessa had handled most of the communication.
She had told me the funeral arrangements were complicated.
She had said Ethan had left instructions that he wanted to be cremated privately.
I never saw the body.
I never attended a funeral.
Vanessa explained that the family should remember him as he had been.
I had accepted it.
Now Daniel was telling me Ethan had been named in Emma's trust.
I called him immediately.
"Explain.""
Daniel sighed.
"Come to my office. I'll show you the original documents.""
"Is Ethan alive?""
A long silence followed.
"I don't know, Marcus.""
"Then why is his name there?""
"Because Emma amended the trust six weeks before she died.""
I looked at Lily.
She was sitting in the passenger seat of my car, carefully arranging her rabbit pillow on her lap.
I lowered my voice.
"What did she change?""
"She added Ethan as a secondary beneficiary and appointed him as an independent protector of Lily's interests.""
"Why?""
"She believed you might need help managing the trust if something happened to her.""
I gripped the steering wheel.
"Emma never told me.""
"She may have intended to. But she was ill, and she wanted to complete the paperwork first.""
I swallowed.
"Did Ethan sign anything?""
"Yes.""
"When?""
"Two days before the amendment.""
I looked through the windshield.
A cold rain was beginning to fall.
"Daniel, if Ethan was alive six weeks before Emma died, why was I told he died four years ago?""
"I can't answer that.""
I stared at the road.
"Who submitted the death notification?""
"Your wife.""
My hands went numb.
Vanessa.
The same woman who had convinced me that Ethan was dead.
The same woman who had told me that my brother had wanted no contact with the family.
The same woman who had been trying to take control of Lily's trust.
I ended the call.
For several minutes, I sat without moving.
Then Lily spoke.
"Daddy?""
I turned.
"Yes?""
"Are you angry?""
I forced a smile.
"No, sweetheart.""
She studied me.
"You look like when Mommy was sick.""
That sentence hurt more than anything else.
I reached across and squeezed her hand.
"I'm just trying to understand something.""
"Can I help?""
I looked at her.
"Not this one, baby. You just need to rest.""
She nodded.
I started the car.
At home, I took Lily to the guest bedroom.
It had been Emma's favorite room because the morning sun came through the curtains.
Vanessa had changed almost everything after Emma died.
The pale blue walls were now gray.
The family photographs had disappeared.
Even the little wooden bookshelf Emma had bought for Lily was gone.
But I remembered where I had stored it.
In the garage.
I carried Lily's backpack upstairs.
Then I brought the old bookshelf back into the room.
Lily stood in the doorway.
"Is this my room?""
"It can be.""
She walked toward the bed.
The mattress was covered in clean white sheets.
A yellow blanket lay folded at the foot.
She touched it with one finger.
"Can I sleep here?""
"Of course.""
She looked toward the door.
"Will you close it?""
I hesitated.
"Would you like it closed?""
She shook her head.
"Just a little open.""
I nodded.
"Then a little open it is.""
I sat beside her while she brushed her teeth.
Afterward, she climbed beneath the blanket.
I tucked the edges around her shoulders.
"Do you want a bedtime story?""
She looked at me.
"Will you stay until I sleep?""
"Yes.""
I sat in the chair beside the bed.
For twenty minutes, she watched me.
Then she whispered:
"Daddy?""
"Yes?""
"Is Vanessa coming back?""
I took a breath.
"I don't know what will happen with the grown-ups. But nobody is allowed to hurt you.""
She considered that.
Then she asked:
"Can I call you if I have a bad dream?""
I smiled.
"You don't even need to call. I'll be right here.""
She finally closed her eyes.
I stayed until her breathing became steady.
Then I went downstairs.
The house was silent.
The Christmas lights blinked in the living room.
Three presents remained beneath the tree.
One was mine.
One was Vanessa's.
And one was Lily's.
I picked up the one with Lily's name written in Emma's old handwriting.
It had been wrapped months earlier.
I had forgotten about it.
Inside was a small silver music box.
I opened it.
A familiar melody began to play.
Emma's favorite song.
Beneath the music box was a handwritten note.
For my little girl. Whenever the world feels too big, remember that you are loved more than you can imagine.
I sat on the floor.
And cried.
The next morning, I arrived at Daniel's office at 9:00 a.m.
He was waiting with a thick folder.
"Marcus.""
He shook my hand.
Then he closed the office door.
"Before we discuss the money, I want to show you something.""
He placed a photograph on the desk.
It showed Ethan standing outside a small restaurant.
He looked older.
His hair was shorter.
But there was no mistaking him.
"Where did you get this?""
"From a private investigator.""
I looked up.
"You hired someone?""
"No. Emma did.""
I stared at him.
Daniel opened another folder.
"Six weeks before her death, Emma asked me to help locate Ethan. She believed he was in danger.""
"What kind of danger?""
"Financial.""
He slid another document across the desk.
It was a bank statement.
An account in Ethan's name had received several deposits from a company called Reed Development Holdings.
My company.
I frowned.
"That's impossible. I closed that subsidiary three years ago.""
Daniel pointed to the dates.
The deposits had been made before the company was dissolved.
"Someone was moving money through the subsidiary.""
"Who?""
He turned another page.
The authorization signature belonged to Vanessa.
I leaned back.
"She had access to the accounts.""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"She was listed as your financial administrator.""
I remembered.
After Emma died, Vanessa had helped me reorganize the business.
She had insisted I needed someone to handle paperwork while I focused on raising Lily.
I had trusted her.
I had given her access to almost everything.
Daniel folded his hands.
"Emma discovered irregularities. She suspected Vanessa was using the company to move money.""
"And Ethan?""
"She believed he knew.""
I stared at the photograph.
"Why didn't he come to me?""
Daniel opened a final envelope.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
The paper was yellowed.
The handwriting was unmistakably Ethan's.
Marcus,
If you're reading this, something has gone badly wrong.
I tried to warn you about Vanessa.
She knows about the money.
She knows what Emma discovered.
And she knows I have the original records.
Please protect Lily.
Don't trust anyone who tells you I'm dead.
I read the final line again.
My brother was alive.
And someone had spent years making sure I believed otherwise.
I looked at Daniel.
"When did you receive this?""
"Yesterday.""
"From Ethan?""
He shook his head.
"From an anonymous courier.""
I picked up the envelope.
"Do we know where he is?""
"Not yet.""
I stood.
"Then we'll find him.""
Daniel reached for another document.
"Marcus, there's one more thing.""
I turned.
He slid a copy of the trust amendment across the desk.
"Emma left instructions that Ethan would receive a sealed letter only if Lily's trust was ever compromised.""
"Where is the letter?""
"Someone collected it three months ago.""
My stomach tightened.
"Who?""
Daniel looked directly at me.
"Your wife.""
I felt the room grow cold.
Three months ago.
The same month Vanessa had begun telling Lily that I was too busy to call.
The same month she had tried to replace me as trustee.
And the same month the money disappeared.
"Daniel, what was in that letter?""
He shook his head.
"I don't know. It was sealed.""
I stared at him.
"Then how did Vanessa get it?""
"She presented a signed authorization from Ethan.""
I looked down at the signature.
It looked genuine.
But the date was impossible.
Ethan had supposedly been dead for four years.
I picked up my phone.
There was a missed call from an unknown number.
Then another.
I called back.
A man's voice answered.
"Marcus?""
I stopped breathing.
It was a voice I knew from childhood.
A voice I had heard through birthday cards, old home videos, and memories.
"Ethan?""
A pause.
Then he said:
"You're finally home.""
I gripped the phone.
"Where have you been?""
"That's a long story.""
"Are you alive?""
He gave a quiet, broken laugh.
"Last time I checked.""
I closed my eyes.
"Why didn't you contact me?""
"Because I couldn't.""
"Who stopped you?""
His voice lowered.
"Vanessa.""
I looked toward Daniel.
He was watching me.
"Ethan, listen carefully. Lily is safe with me now. But I need to know what happened.""
My brother took a breath.
Then he said something I would never forget.
"Marcus, I didn't fake my death. Someone else did.""
I gripped the edge of the desk.
"Who?""
"Your wife.""
Then the call ended.
I stared at the screen.
Before I could call him back, another message appeared.
A photograph.
It showed Ethan standing beside a woman.
Emma.
My late wife.
The picture was dated four years earlier.
But Emma was smiling.
May you like
And beneath the photograph was a message:
*She didn't die believing Vanessa was innocent.*
