Chapter 8: The Man Who Was Erased From My Life
Nobody moved.
The stranger stood in the doorway, gripping the frame like he needed it to stay standing.
My mother stared at him.
Not with fear.
Not with anger.
With heartbreak.
A heartbreak so deep it looked like recognition.
“Daniel.””
The name escaped her lips.
My chest tightened.
Daniel.
The name I had never heard before.
The name that somehow felt familiar.
The man looked at me.
And his eyes filled with tears.
“Lena.””
I stepped backward.
“No.””
Everyone watched us.
I hated that.
I hated that my entire life was becoming a public disaster.
My graduation.
My family.
My identity.
Everything was being ripped open in front of strangers.
Detective Harris approached him.
“Who are you?””
The man raised his hands.
“My name is Daniel Cross.””
My mother closed her eyes.
“He’s your biological father.””
The words landed harder than anything else.
I looked at her.
“You knew where he was?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
Daniel looked at her.
“I thought you were dead.””
That sentence changed something.
Because there was real pain in his voice.
Not acting.
Not manipulation.
Pain.
Detective Harris looked between them.
“Someone needs to explain.””
Daniel slowly walked inside.
“I was there the night Claire disappeared.””
My mother looked at him.
“You promised me you would stay away.””
“I tried.””
His voice broke.
“But after everything happened, I couldn’t.””
I stared at them.
“What happened?””
Daniel looked at me.
“I loved your mother.””
My father’s voice suddenly came from the hallway.
“You still do.””
Everyone turned.
Marcus stood there.
Two officers held him back.
His face was filled with anger.
“You always wanted what belonged to me.””
Daniel looked at him.
“I never wanted anything from you.””
Marcus laughed.
“You took my family.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“You were never his.””
The words hurt.
Even though I knew what he meant.
Because for six years, Marcus had been my father.
The only father I knew.
The man who raised me.
And now he was standing there like a stranger.
Daniel continued.
“Claire and I were together before Marcus.””
My mother looked down.
“I found out I was pregnant.””
My breath caught.
“Me.””
She nodded.
“Your grandmother knew.””
I looked at Detective Harris.
“The inheritance.””
He understood.
“Your grandmother changed her will after learning Marcus was not Lena’s biological father.””
Daniel nodded.
“She knew Marcus only cared about money.””
Marcus shouted:
“That’s a lie!””
Nobody believed him.
Daniel looked at him.
“You threatened Claire.””
Marcus smiled bitterly.
“And you ran away.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
Because that was true.
My mother looked at him.
“You left.””
The pain between them was obvious.
“I thought Marcus would hurt you if I stayed.””
“You thought?””
Her voice cracked.
“You left me alone.””
Daniel looked destroyed.
“I was wrong.””
The room became quiet.
Because suddenly everyone was human.
Everyone had made mistakes.
But some mistakes destroyed lives.
Detective Harris looked at Daniel.
“Where were you all these years?””
“Hiding.””
“Why?””
“Because Richard Bennett found me.””
My stomach tightened.
“My grandfather.””
Daniel nodded.
“He threatened me.””
“With what?””
“My daughter.””
I felt sick.
“He told me if I came back, Marcus would make sure Lena disappeared.””
My mother covered her mouth.
“He used me.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Yes.””
The truth kept coming.
Every answer created another question.
Detective Harris turned toward Marcus.
“You built this entire situation around controlling Lena.””
Marcus looked at me.
“Everything I did was for you.””
I stared at him.
“You tried to kill my mother.””
“No.””
“You lied about her for six years.””
His face changed.
“I protected you.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
My voice became stronger.
“You protected yourself.””
For the first time, Marcus had no response.
Vanessa suddenly laughed.
Everyone looked at her.
“You’re all acting like Marcus was the mastermind.””
She shook her head.
“He wasn’t.””
Detective Harris narrowed his eyes.
“Then who was?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“The person who started all of this.””
Nobody spoke.
She smiled.
“The person who wrote the fake letters.””
My mother froze.
“What?””
Vanessa continued.
“The person who changed the will.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Who?””
Vanessa looked toward the hallway.
Toward where Marcus had been standing.
But Marcus wasn’t there anymore.
The officers looked around.
“What?””
Everyone turned.
The door at the end of the hall was open.
Marcus was gone.
Detective Harris immediately ran outside.
My mother grabbed my hand.
“Lena, we need to leave.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
Her face was terrified.
“Because Vanessa wasn’t talking about Marcus.””
The lights flickered again.
A phone rang.
Not mine.
Not Detective Harris’s.
My mother’s.
She looked at the screen.
And her face changed.
“What?””
I stepped closer.
“Who is it?””
She slowly answered.
A voice came through the speaker.
An old voice.
A familiar voice.
The voice of someone who should not have been calling.
My mother dropped the phone.
“Lena…”
“What?””
May you like
She looked at me.
“Your grandfather is not the only one who survived that night.””
