Chapter 6: The Witness Who Came Back From The Grave
Nobody moved.
The phone remained pressed against my ear.
My mother’s face had gone completely white.
“Emily?””
She whispered the name like it was impossible.
Like she was hearing someone speak from the dead.
I looked at Detective Harris.
He immediately motioned for me to put the call on speaker.
I did.
The voice returned.
“Claire?””
My mother stepped closer.
“I’m here.””
A shaky breath came through the phone.
“I thought I would never hear your voice again.””
My mother covered her mouth.
“Emily, where are you?””
Silence.
Then:
“I don’t have much time.””
My heart started racing.
Detective Harris grabbed his radio.
“Can you tell us your location?””
The woman on the phone laughed weakly.
“You sound just like every officer who failed to find me.””
The detective’s expression tightened.
“We’re trying to help you.””
“I know.””
Her voice softened.
“But you need to understand something.””
“What?””
“I wasn’t missing.””
Everyone froze.
Emily continued.
“They wanted everyone to think I disappeared.””
My mother closed her eyes.
“Who?””
A pause.
Then:
“Your father.””
I looked down.
Another piece.
Another nightmare.
“How are you alive?”” my mother asked.
Emily took a shaky breath.
“Because someone helped me.””
“Who?””
The line went silent.
Then Emily answered.
“Richard Bennett.””
My grandfather.
My stomach twisted.
Detective Harris looked confused.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It does,” Emily said.
“Richard knew Marcus was dangerous.””
My mother shook her head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
Emily’s voice became stronger.
“He saved me.””
Everyone went quiet.
The truth was becoming impossible to follow.
My grandfather had known.
My father had lied.
Vanessa had helped cover it.
But now the person who had been missing for six years was saying my grandfather saved her.
“Then why did he let us think you were dead?”” Detective Harris asked.
Emily didn’t answer immediately.
When she did, her voice was broken.
“Because he made a deal.””
“What deal?””
“To protect Lena.””
My name made me freeze.
“Me?””
My mother looked at me.
Emily continued.
“Your grandfather discovered Marcus and Vanessa were planning to take your inheritance.””
I looked at the notebook.
“But he was involved.””
“Yes.””
The answer shocked everyone.
“He helped create the plan.””
My mother whispered:
“No…”
“But when he realized Marcus wanted Claire dead, he changed.””
Detective Harris frowned.
“That doesn’t excuse anything.””
“No,” Emily said.
“It doesn’t.””
A tear slid down my mother’s face.
“Where have you been?””
Emily hesitated.
“Hiding.””
“From who?””
The answer came quietly.
“Everyone.””
The classroom felt smaller.
Like the walls were closing in.
“Emily,” Detective Harris said, “we need you to come forward.””
“I will.””
“When?””
“When I know Lena is safe.””
I looked around.
“Why wouldn’t I be safe?””
The phone went silent.
That silence scared me more than anything.
Finally, Emily said:
“Because Marcus wasn’t working alone.””
My mother grabbed my hand.
“Who else?””
Emily’s voice lowered.
“Someone inside your family.””
My heart pounded.
“We know about Marcus and Vanessa.””
“No.””
Emily sounded afraid.
“I mean someone you still trust.””
The classroom door suddenly opened.
A police officer stepped inside.
“Detective Harris.””
Everyone turned.
He looked uncomfortable.
“There’s a problem.””
“What?””
He held up a file.
“We checked the evidence bag from Vanessa.””
“And?””
“She didn’t leave town alone.””
My mother stood.
“Who was with her?””
The officer looked at me.
That look told me everything.
“No.””
I backed away.
“Who?””
The officer swallowed.
“We found another person’s fingerprints.””
Detective Harris grabbed the file.
Then his face changed.
Not confusion.
Not surprise.
Fear.
“What?””
He stared at the paper.
“That’s impossible.””
My voice shook.
“Whose fingerprints are they?””
Nobody answered.
“Tell me.””
Detective Harris slowly looked up.
“Lena…”
My mother stepped forward.
“Who?””
The detective’s voice was barely audible.
“They belong to someone who was never supposed to be part of this investigation.””
I felt my heartbeat in my ears.
“Who?””
He looked at the phone still sitting on the table.
At Emily’s call.
Then at me.
“The fingerprints belong to your mother.””
The room went silent.
My mother stumbled backward.
“No.””
Detective Harris held up the evidence.
“Claire Bennett’s fingerprints were found inside Vanessa’s car.””
I looked at my mother.
The woman I had just started believing.
The woman I had spent years missing.
The woman who said she was trying to protect me.
Her face crumbled.
“I don’t understand.””
But Detective Harris wasn’t looking at her.
He was looking at me.
Because the impossible truth had just appeared.
Someone had planted evidence.
And whoever did it wanted me to believe my mother was guilty.
My phone suddenly buzzed.
A new message.
From Emily.
