Chapter 8: The Truth Buried Under Memory

“It was meant to kill you.””

Lucas’s voice filled the hallway.

I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t even blink.

Because the person standing in front of me was impossible.

But the words he spoke felt more real than anything that had happened over the last week.

The shadow stepped closer.

The hospital bracelet around his wrist caught the light.

I stared at it.

At the name.

At the impossible proof.

Lucas.

My brother.

The man I had buried.

“Claire,” he whispered.

My knees nearly gave out.

“Lucas?””

The figure stopped.

For a moment, I saw him exactly as I remembered.

Not the pale hospital patient.

Not the shadow.

My little brother.

The boy who used to steal the last slice of pizza and blame the dog.

The teenager who walked me home when I was afraid.

The uncle who cried when Emily was born.

“Is it really you?”” I whispered.

A sad smile appeared.

“I wish I could say yes.””

The answer terrified me.

I looked at Daniel.

He was sitting frozen in the chair.

His eyes were fixed on Lucas.

Not disbelief.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

“You knew,” I whispered.

Daniel looked at me.

“Claire…”

“You knew.””

His silence was enough.

Rachel stepped backward.

“I need to leave.””

I turned toward her.

“No.””

She stopped.

“I need answers.””

Rachel looked at Daniel.

“He knows more than I do.””

Daniel stood slowly.

His face looked older than it had that morning.

“I was trying to keep you safe.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“Then tell me the truth.””

Daniel looked at Lucas.

The shadow remained silent.

Waiting.

Finally, Daniel spoke.

“The night of the accident…”

He stopped.

His voice cracked.

“I wasn’t the only one who knew something was wrong.””

My hands clenched.

“Who else?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Someone close to you.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

“Who?””

He didn’t answer.

Lucas did.

“Your father.””

I froze.

“My father?””

Lucas nodded.

The memory of my father’s funeral came back.

The man who always seemed distant.

The man who never liked Daniel.

The man who disappeared from my life after the accident.

“No.””

Lucas looked at me sadly.

“He knew.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Your father was involved in something illegal.””

Rachel nodded.

“Medical fraud.””

I stared at them.

“What does that have to do with me?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Your father was using patient information from the hospital.””

My stomach twisted.

“Why?””

“To sell it.””

The room felt colder.

“And Lucas found out?””

“Yes.””

Daniel looked down.

“Lucas discovered the records.””

I looked at my brother.

“And then?””

Lucas’s voice was quiet.

“He wanted to expose him.””

I covered my mouth.

“Then why did the accident happen?””

Nobody answered immediately.

And that silence told me everything.

Someone had wanted Lucas gone.

But why me?

Why Emily?

Daniel sat back down.

“Because you were Lucas’s emergency contact.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“Your father knew Lucas trusted you.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“He thought if Lucas disappeared, the evidence would disappear too.””

Rachel opened her bag.

She pulled out another envelope.

“Your brother wasn’t careless.””

She handed it to me.

Inside was a small flash drive.

I looked at it.

“What is this?””

“Everything Lucas collected.””

Daniel stared at it.

“Where did you get that?””

Rachel looked at him.

“From the place you never checked.””

A strange feeling moved through me.

“What place?””

Rachel looked upstairs.

“Emily’s room.””

I stared at her.

“My daughter’s room?””

She nodded.

“Lucas hid it there.””

My mind raced.

The stuffed animals.

The bookshelf.

The room he had always loved.

The room where Emily had been hearing him.

I looked toward the stairs.

“Why?””

Lucas answered.

“Because I knew someone would search everywhere else.””

His voice softened.

“But no one would look in the room of the little girl I was trying to save.””

I went upstairs.

Nobody followed.

For some reason, I needed to do this alone.

Emily’s room looked exactly the same.

The yellow night light.

The books.

The toys.

The bed where this nightmare began.

I stood beside the bookshelf.

“What did you hide?””

I didn’t expect an answer.

But the stuffed rabbit on the shelf moved.

I froze.

Slowly, I walked closer.

The rabbit fell forward.

Behind it was a small gap in the wall.

My heart started pounding.

I reached inside.

My fingers touched something cold.

A small metal box.

I pulled it out.

Inside was the flash drive.

And a photograph.

I looked at the picture first.

My breath disappeared.

It showed me.

Daniel.

My father.

And Lucas.

Standing together.

The date was written on the back.

Three days before the accident.

I turned it over.

A note was attached.

Lucas’s handwriting.

*“Claire, if you’re reading this, I’m sorry.””*

My eyes filled.

*“I couldn’t tell you because someone was watching you.””*

I continued reading.

*“The person who caused the accident wanted you to forget. They knew you would find the truth if you remembered.””*

My hands shook.

Then I saw the final line.

*“Trust Emily’s memories. She was there.””*

I looked at my daughter’s room.

A terrible realization formed.

Emily wasn’t imagining things.

She wasn’t dreaming.

She had been remembering.

I ran downstairs.

“Daniel.””

Everyone turned.

I held up the photo.

“Explain.””

Daniel looked at it.

His face changed.

“I thought that was gone.””

My blood froze.

“You knew about this?””

“Yes.””

“You knew Lucas hid evidence in Emily’s room?””

“I suspected.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Daniel looked broken.

“Because if you knew everything at once…”

“What?””

He looked at me.

“You would remember.””

The room went silent.

I felt a sharp pain behind my eyes.

Memories.

Pieces.

A hospital hallway.

My father arguing with someone.

Daniel shouting.

Lucas crying.

Emily’s tiny hand in mine.

Then another memory.

A voice.

A voice I had forgotten.

My father’s voice.

“After tonight, she won’t remember any of this.””

I grabbed the table.

Daniel caught me.

I pushed him away.

“No.””

My head was spinning.

“Why am I remembering now?””

Nobody answered.

Then Emily walked into the room.

She looked at me.

“Because Uncle Lucas helped you.””

I knelt.

“Emily…”

She hugged her rabbit.

“He said you were strong enough now.””

Tears filled my eyes.

“How long have you been talking to him?””

She looked toward the hallway.

“Since the first night.””

“The first night?””

She nodded.

“The night I heard Mommy crying.””

My heart stopped.

“I wasn’t crying.””

Emily looked confused.

“Yes, you were.””

I looked at Daniel.

“What is she talking about?””

Daniel went pale.

Emily whispered:

“The night before the accident.””

The room froze.

“That wasn’t six years ago,” I said.

She nodded.

“It was.””

My breathing changed.

“No.””

She continued.

“Uncle Lucas said you forgot because Daddy made you forget.””

Daniel whispered:

“Emily…”

She flinched.

Then Lucas spoke.

“He didn’t do it alone.””

Everyone looked toward the shadow.

Lucas’s voice became darker.

“The person who planned everything is still alive.””

A chill moved through me.

“Who?””

The shadow looked at Daniel.

Then at me.

And finally toward the front door.

Before he disappeared, he said:

“The person who has been watching Emily’s room every night.””

My phone suddenly vibrated.

A new notification.

Another live camera alert.

I looked down.

The hidden camera in Emily’s room had turned on.

But I had unplugged it.

Weeks ago.

I opened the feed.

The screen showed Emily’s bedroom.

Empty.

Except for one thing.

A figure was standing beside the bed.

Watching.

And this time…

The figure wasn’t hiding.

Because the camera clearly captured the face.

A face I knew.

A face I trusted.

May you like

A face that made my blood run cold.

My father.
