Chapter 7: The Person Behind the Door

The front door opened slowly.

Too slowly.

The kind of slow movement that makes your mind imagine a hundred terrifying possibilities before you even see who is standing there.

I stood frozen at the bottom of the stairs.

My phone was still pressed against my ear.

Emily’s voice echoed in my mind.

*“Uncle Lucas says he’s not the one you should be afraid of.””*

The hallway light flickered.

A figure stepped inside.

For one second, I thought it was Lucas.

My heart wanted to believe it.

I wanted to see my brother.

I wanted to see the man who used to carry Emily on his shoulders and sing to her when she cried.

But then the person moved closer.

And I realized.

It wasn’t Lucas.

It was someone else.

Someone I knew.

Someone who should not have been there.

“Mom?””

Emily’s voice came from behind the figure.

I looked past him.

My daughter was standing near the doorway, holding her rabbit.

Safe.

Alive.

But terrified.

I rushed forward.

“Emily!””

The person blocking the entrance stepped aside.

And then I saw her face.

A woman.

Older.

Tired.

Her eyes immediately filled with tears.

“Claire.””

I stopped.

Nobody called me that except people from my past.

Before I became Daniel’s wife.

Before I became Emily’s mother.

Before everything changed.

“Who are you?”” I whispered.

The woman looked at Emily.

Then back at me.

“You really don’t remember me.””

My body went cold.

Because something about her voice felt familiar.

Like a song you haven’t heard in years.

A memory buried too deep.

Daniel appeared behind me.

The second he saw her, he stopped.

His face changed completely.

“No.””

The woman looked at him.

“Yes.””

Daniel’s voice was barely audible.

“You can’t be here.””

She gave a bitter smile.

“That’s what you said six years ago.””

I turned toward Daniel.

“What is happening?””

Nobody answered.

The woman stepped into the house.

Her eyes stayed on Daniel.

“You never told her.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Leave.””

I stared at him.

“You know her?””

The woman laughed quietly.

“He knows me very well.””

“Who are you?”” I demanded.

She looked at me.

“My name is Rachel.””

The name meant nothing.

But the way Daniel reacted meant everything.

I saw it.

Recognition.

Fear.

Guilt.

“Daniel,” I said slowly.

“Explain.””

He didn’t.

Rachel did.

“I worked at the hospital with your husband.””

My stomach tightened.

Another hospital connection.

Another secret.

“What kind of work?””

She looked at Daniel.

“Medical records.””

Silence.

I felt my heartbeat becoming louder.

Rachel continued.

“Six years ago, I found something strange.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Rachel, don’t.””

She ignored him.

“Someone had been changing patient information.””

My eyes moved between them.

“What information?””

Rachel looked at me.

“Your brother’s.””

The room became painfully quiet.

“You said his records were missing.””

Rachel nodded.

“They weren’t missing.””

She looked directly at Daniel.

“They were changed.””

Daniel’s voice hardened.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

Rachel smiled sadly.

“I spent three years trying to prove it.””

I looked at Daniel.

“And?””

Rachel answered.

“I found proof.””

Daniel looked furious now.

“Where is it?””

The question slipped out.

Too quickly.

Too naturally.

Rachel noticed.

So did I.

“You still care about that file.””

Daniel said nothing.

I stepped closer to him.

“What file?””

Rachel reached into her bag.

She pulled out a small envelope.

My hands became cold.

“I kept this because I knew one day you would need to see it.””

She held it toward me.

Daniel moved.

“Don’t.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

He stopped.

Because he had no answer.

I took the envelope.

Inside was a stack of papers.

The first page was a medical report.

Lucas’s name was written across the top.

My eyes moved down.

Then stopped.

A line had been highlighted.

*Medication administered: 11:42 PM.*

I frowned.

“What is this?””

Rachel looked at Daniel.

“He gave your brother medication that night.””

Daniel shook his head.

“I was following protocol.””

“Then why did the dosage change?””

My eyes lifted.

“What?””

Rachel pointed to another document.

“The original order.””

Then another paper.

“The modified order.””

I looked between them.

The numbers were different.

My hands started shaking.

“Daniel?””

He looked away.

“I can explain.””

Those four words.

Those were the words people said when the truth was already too painful.

Rachel continued.

“Lucas discovered the changes before he died.””

I whispered:

“That’s why he recorded the video.””

She nodded.

“He knew something was wrong.””

Daniel’s voice became desperate.

“Rachel, you don’t know everything.””

“Then tell her.””

He stayed silent.

Rachel turned to me.

“Lucas didn’t believe Daniel was trying to kill him.””

That surprised me.

“What?””

She looked at Daniel.

“He thought Daniel was protecting someone.””

I frowned.

“Who?””

Rachel’s eyes moved toward Emily.

My daughter immediately stepped closer to me.

A terrible feeling entered my chest.

“No.””

Rachel’s expression softened.

“Your daughter was the reason Lucas started investigating.””

I looked at Emily.

“Why?””

Rachel lowered her voice.

“Because the accident that hurt her wasn’t random.””

The room went silent.

Again.

Too many secrets.

Too many impossible truths.

I looked at Daniel.

“You knew.””

He looked broken.

“Yes.””

“You knew the crash wasn’t an accident?””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

“I was trying to protect you.””

My anger exploded.

“Stop saying that!””

My voice echoed through the house.

“You keep using that excuse.””

Daniel flinched.

“You protected me by stealing my memories?””

His face changed.

“I didn’t steal them.””

“Then why don’t I remember?””

Silence.

Rachel answered.

“Because someone gave you medication after the crash.””

I turned slowly.

“What?””

Rachel looked at Daniel.

“He told everyone you needed treatment for trauma.””

My breathing became uneven.

“Daniel?””

He looked down.

I already knew.

“You did.””

His silence confirmed it.

“You made me forget.””

“I was trying to help you.””

“You made me forget my brother.””

Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.

“No.””

“Yes.””

I pointed toward Emily.

“You made me forget what happened to my own daughter.””

He whispered:

“I was scared.””

That was the first honest thing he had said.

“Of what?””

Daniel looked at Emily.

“Of losing both of you.””

A small sound came from behind me.

Emily.

“Daddy?””

Everyone turned.

She was crying.

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

“Emily.””

She backed away.

And that broke my heart.

Because my daughter had never been afraid of him before.

“Why did you lie?”” she whispered.

Daniel froze.

“How do you know?””

Emily looked toward the hallway.

“The same way I know everything.””

My skin prickled.

“What do you mean?””

She pointed toward the dark hallway behind Rachel.

“He told me.””

Nobody moved.

Then the hallway light flickered.

Once.

Twice.

And the temperature in the room dropped.

Rachel looked frightened.

“Claire…”

I looked at her.

“What?””

She stared behind me.

“Who is standing there?””

I slowly turned.

At the end of the hallway…

A shadow stood in the darkness.

A hospital bracelet reflected under the light.

My heart stopped.

Because this time…

Everyone could see it.

And then a familiar voice whispered:

“Daniel.””

The shadow moved forward.

“You promised you would tell her the truth.””

Daniel collapsed into a chair.

His face was covered with fear.

Because he recognized the voice.

And so did I.

It was Lucas.

But the thing that terrified me wasn’t that my dead brother was standing in my house.

It was what he said next.

“Claire…”

The shadow looked at me.

“The accident was never meant to hurt Emily.””

A pause.

May you like

Then:

“It was meant to kill you.””
