Chapter 6: The Night Everything Changed
“Your daughter was the reason Lucas died.””
Daniel’s words hung in the air.
For a moment, I couldn’t understand them.
The sentence had meaning.
I knew every word.
But together, they made no sense.
I stared at my husband.
“What did you say?””
Daniel looked broken.
Not guilty.
Not angry.
Broken.
“I didn’t mean it like that.””
I laughed once.
A cold, empty sound.
“How else could you mean it?””
He stepped toward me.
I stepped back.
“Don’t.””
Daniel stopped.
The distance between us suddenly felt like a wall.
“Tell me the truth,” I said.
His eyes filled with pain.
“I’ve been trying to protect you.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“You’ve been lying to me.””
He looked down.
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt more than another lie would have.
I looked toward the stairs.
Emily was sleeping upstairs.
My eight-year-old daughter.
The little girl who had been afraid of something in her room.
The little girl who had been trying to warn me.
“What happened six years ago?””
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
I could see him fighting with himself.
Finally, he sat down.
“I need to start from the beginning.””
I stayed standing.
“Then start.””
He took a deep breath.
“Six years ago, before Lucas died, he discovered something.””
“What?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Something about Emily.””
My hands tightened.
“What about Emily?””
He looked toward the ceiling.
“She was sick.””
I froze.
“No.””
“She was.””
“You never told me that.””
“Because you didn’t know.””
My heart began racing.
“What are you talking about?””
Daniel rubbed his face.
“When Emily was two, she had a medical emergency.””
I shook my head.
“I would remember that.””
“You were there.””
The room became silent.
“I was there?””
Daniel nodded.
“You were unconscious.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
“You were in the hospital too.””
The memories came back in pieces.
A stormy night.
A car ride.
Bright lights.
Voices.
Then nothing.
I had always thought it was a dream.
Daniel continued.
“You and Emily were driving home from your mother’s house.””
I swallowed.
“I don’t remember.””
“I know.””
“Why?””
His expression changed.
“Because of the accident.””
I felt dizzy.
“What accident?””
Daniel looked at me sadly.
“The crash.””
The word echoed.
Crash.
Suddenly, fragments appeared in my mind.
Rain hitting glass.
Emily crying.
A horn.
Metal twisting.
Then darkness.
“I told everyone you had memory loss from the trauma,” Daniel said quietly.
I looked at him.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“And Lucas?””
Daniel nodded.
“He knew too.””
I sat down slowly.
My legs couldn’t hold me anymore.
“What happened that night?””
Daniel looked at the floor.
“You lost control of the car.””
I frowned.
“No.””
“You did.””
“I wouldn’t.””
“I know.””
The answer shocked me.
Daniel looked up.
“You weren’t driving recklessly.””
“Then what happened?””
He hesitated.
“You were sick.””
“What?””
“You had a medical reaction. A rare one. You passed out behind the wheel.””
I covered my mouth.
“No.””
“The car hit a tree.””
My eyes filled with tears.
“Emily…”
“She was hurt.””
My voice became smaller.
“How badly?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“She stopped breathing.””
The room disappeared around me.
I could only hear my own heartbeat.
“No…”
“Lucas was the one who found you.””
I looked up.
“What?””
“He was nearby. He saw the accident.””
Daniel’s voice cracked.
“He pulled Emily out of the car.””
I covered my face.
“No…”
“Your brother saved her life.””
I remembered Lucas.
Always helping.
Always showing up.
Always protecting people.
“What does this have to do with his death?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
And that scared me.
“Daniel.””
He swallowed.
“When Lucas saved Emily, he injured himself.””
My eyes lifted.
“How?””
“He cut his arm badly.””
“That’s it?””
“No.””
Daniel looked away.
“The wound became infected.””
I stared at him.
“That’s what killed him?””
He nodded.
I almost laughed.
Because it sounded impossible.
“My brother died because he saved my daughter?””
Daniel whispered:
“Yes.””
Tears fell down my face.
“No.””
I shook my head.
“No, Lucas would never blame her.””
“He didn’t.””
“Then why did you say she was the reason he died?””
Daniel looked devastated.
“Because Lucas blamed himself.””
“For what?””
“For not getting her help faster.””
The room became quiet.
I thought about the note.
*Protect Emily. Please.*
I thought about the shadow beside her bed.
I thought about my daughter saying Lucas visited her.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because Lucas asked me not to.””
I froze.
“What?””
“He told me you would destroy yourself.””
“That’s not your decision.””
“I know.””
His voice broke.
“But after Lucas died, you were barely alive.””
I remembered those months.
The grief.
The emptiness.
The feeling that half of me had disappeared.
Daniel continued.
“You stopped eating. You stopped sleeping. You couldn’t even walk into his room.””
I looked down.
“That doesn’t mean I shouldn’t have known.””
“You’re right.””
He nodded.
“I should have told you.””
“Then why didn’t you?””
Daniel was silent.
Then he said:
“Because the accident wasn’t the only thing Lucas discovered.””
My chest tightened.
“What else?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Before he died, Lucas found evidence that the crash wasn’t completely accidental.””
The room went cold.
“What?””
“He thought someone tampered with the car.””
I stared at him.
“Who?””
Daniel looked at me.
“I don’t know.””
“You’re lying.””
“I’m not.””
“Then why did Lucas record that video?””
“Because he suspected someone.””
“Who?””
Daniel looked toward the window.
“I think he suspected me.””
Silence.
I couldn’t speak.
My husband.
The man sitting across from me.
The man who had held my hand through grief.
The man who raised Emily with me.
“You?””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“But he was wrong.””
I stood.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“I expect you to know I loved Lucas too.””
“Then why did you delete the recording?””
His face changed.
“I didn’t.””
“Someone did.””
“Yes.””
“Who had access?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
That was when I realized something.
There was one person missing from this conversation.
One person who had been there from the beginning.
The person who knew every detail.
The person who always seemed calm.
I whispered:
“Where is Emily?””
Daniel looked at me.
“What?””
“She’s been upstairs too long.””
A wave of fear hit me.
I ran.
“Emily?””
No answer.
I reached her room.
The door was open.
The bed was empty.
My heart stopped.
“Emily!””
I searched the room.
Closet.
Bathroom.
Behind the curtains.
Nothing.
Then I saw the camera.
The live feed was still open.
My phone was on the floor where I had dropped it earlier.
The screen showed Emily’s room.
But Emily wasn’t there.
Instead, the camera showed something moving near the bed.
A shadow.
And beside it…
My daughter.
She was standing in the darkness.
Talking to someone I couldn’t see.
I grabbed the phone.
“Emily!””
Her voice came through the speaker.
“Mom?””
“Where are you?””
A pause.
Then she whispered:
“I’m not upstairs.””
My blood froze.
“What?””
Emily’s voice trembled.
“I’m downstairs.””
I looked around.
The bedroom was empty.
The camera was showing a fake image.
A recording.
Someone had accessed it.
Then the front door opened.
Slowly.
A figure stepped inside.
And Emily whispered:
“Mom…”
I turned toward the entrance.
“Uncle Lucas says…”
The figure moved into the light.
May you like
And Emily finished:
“He’s not the one you should be afraid of.””
