Chapter 5: The Signature That Was Never Supposed to Exist
The older attorney introduced himself as Graham Pierce.
Marcus remembered him.
Graham had represented his father for more than twenty years. He had attended Richard Whitmore's funeral, helped settle the estate, and personally delivered the documents Marcus had signed after his father's death.
The younger man was called Oliver Shaw.
He carried a metal briefcase and avoided looking at Vanessa.
“Mr. Whitmore,” Graham said, “we need to resolve a serious matter concerning your father's estate.””
Marcus stood between the attorneys and his daughter.
“Then start by explaining why my fiancée has a security device that controls an underground prison beneath my swimming pool.””
Graham blinked.
“An underground what?””
Vanessa sighed.
“Marcus is upset. His daughter has been telling stories, and he has convinced himself that Eleanor is somewhere beneath the house.””
Graham looked at her.
“Is that true?””
Vanessa didn't answer.
Marcus stepped forward.
“My wife is alive. She's locked behind a steel door beneath this property. I want that door opened immediately.””
Oliver dropped the metal case.
The sound echoed across the terrace.
Graham turned sharply toward him.
“Oliver?””
The younger attorney looked terrified.
“I told you this was going too far.””
Vanessa's expression changed.
“Be quiet.””
Marcus looked at Oliver.
“You know about Eleanor?””
Oliver shook his head.
“I know about the documents.””
“What documents?””
“The original estate transfer papers. The ones Vanessa wanted signed tonight.””
Marcus looked at the ring box.
Vanessa slowly closed it.
“Oliver, don't.””
The young attorney took a breath.
“Mr. Whitmore, the proposal wasn't just a proposal. Vanessa prepared a marriage agreement that would have given her authority over certain family assets once you married her.””
Marcus stared at her.
“What?””
Graham opened his folder.
“It's a standard marital financial arrangement.””
“Then why was it hidden inside the proposal paperwork?””
Neither attorney answered.
Marcus held out his hand.
“Give me the folder.””
Graham hesitated.
“Mr. Whitmore—”
“Now.””
Graham handed it over.
Marcus flipped through the pages.
The first document concerned the marriage.
The second transferred certain voting rights to Vanessa.
The third granted her temporary authority over the family trust if Marcus became incapacitated.
He read the final page twice.
Then he looked up.
“You wanted control of the company.””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“I wanted to protect you.””
“By making me legally incapacitated?””
“That's not what it says.””
“It says you could control my assets if I was declared unable to manage them.””
“Only under specific circumstances.””
Marcus laughed without humor.
“You mean if something happened to me?””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Marcus, you're not thinking clearly.””
“Because my wife is locked underground?””
“Because you're allowing a six-year-old's imagination to destroy everything we've built.””
Ava squeezed his hand.
“I saw Mommy.””
Vanessa turned toward her.
“Go inside, Ava.””
“No.””
“I said go inside.””
The little girl began crying again.
Marcus moved between them.
“Don't speak to her.””
Graham cleared his throat.
“Perhaps we should all calm down. The legal documents can be reviewed tomorrow.””
“No,” Marcus said.
“They'll be reviewed tonight. And the police will review them too.””
Vanessa's expression hardened.
“You don't want that.””
“Try me.””
She looked at Daniel.
“Tell him what happens if those documents reach the police.””
Daniel's face fell.
Marcus turned.
“What is she talking about?””
Daniel hesitated.
Then he looked at Oliver.
“Tell him.””
Oliver opened the briefcase.
Inside were several folders, a small recording device, and a stack of bank statements.
He placed them on the garden table.
“Four years of financial transfers,” he said.
“Several accounts were opened using Marcus's identity. The money was moved through companies registered in different states.””
Marcus picked up the first statement.
The account holder's name was his.
But the signature wasn't.
He looked at Daniel.
“Did you do this?””
Daniel shook his head.
“I helped her access the accounts. I didn't know how much she was taking.””
“How much?””
Daniel stared at the ground.
“Thirty-two million dollars.””
Marcus felt the world tilt.
Vanessa folded her arms.
“Your brother was paid for his assistance. Don't pretend he was innocent.””
Daniel's face twisted.
“You told me the money was going into the company!””
“And you believed me?””
“You said it was temporary!””
Marcus put the statements down.
“Both of you are going to prison.””
Vanessa laughed.
“You still don't understand. The company isn't yours to give away anymore.””
She reached into her handbag and produced another document.
“Your father's original trust agreement requires two independent witnesses to validate any amendment made after his death. Your father signed this one without the required witnesses.””
Graham nodded.
“She's correct about the formal requirements. The document's validity would need to be established in court.””
Marcus looked at him.
“You knew about the second will?””
Graham hesitated.
“Yes.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because your father instructed me not to disclose it until the appointed time.””
“What appointed time?””
“When Ava turned eighteen.””
Marcus looked down at his daughter.
She was rubbing her eyes, exhausted.
“Then why does Vanessa have it?””
Graham's expression changed.
“Because she stole it from my office.””
Vanessa gave him a contemptuous look.
“You misplaced it, Graham. Don't blame me for your incompetence.””
Oliver stepped forward.
“I have the original recording.””
Everyone turned.
Vanessa's face lost its color.
“What recording?””
Oliver removed a small digital recorder from the case.
“Mr. Whitmore's father recorded a meeting before he died. He explained why he changed the trust.””
Graham reached for it.
“Oliver, we haven't verified its authenticity.””
“Then let's verify it.””
He pressed play.
Static filled the garden.
Then an elderly man's voice emerged.
Richard Whitmore.
Marcus's father.
“If you're hearing this, something has happened to Eleanor, or someone has tried to interfere with Ava's inheritance.””
Marcus stopped breathing.
His father's voice continued.
“I have reason to believe that money has been taken from the family trust. I also believe the person responsible is closer to my sons than either of them understands.””
Daniel stepped backward.
Marcus stared at the recorder.
“Dad?””
The recording continued.
“Marcus, if you are hearing this, protect your daughter. The original documents are not the most important thing I've hidden.””
A pause.
Then his father spoke again.
“Eleanor knows where the evidence is. And she knows why I never trusted Vanessa Reed.””
The recording stopped.
Nobody moved.
Marcus slowly turned toward Vanessa.
“You knew my father?””
She gave a bitter smile.
“Everyone knew your father.””
“Why did he mention you?””
Vanessa looked at Graham.
Then at Oliver.
Then back at Marcus.
“You want the truth?””
“Yes.””
She stepped closer.
“Your father wasn't the generous old man you remember. He destroyed people. He ruined businesses. He made promises he never intended to keep.””
Marcus shook his head.
“What does that have to do with Eleanor?””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears, but this time there was no warmth in them.
“Ask your wife why she was really working for your father before you met her.””
Marcus frowned.
“What?””
“She didn't tell you everything, did she?””
He stared at her.
Vanessa leaned closer.
“Eleanor wasn't an innocent victim who happened to marry into a wealthy family. She knew exactly who your father was. She came into your life with a purpose.””
Marcus looked toward the underground passage.
“That's a lie.””
“Then ask her.””
Oliver suddenly looked at his phone.
“There's something else.””
He opened a message.
The sender was an unknown number.
The message contained a photograph.
It showed a woman sitting on a narrow bed in a concrete room.
Her face was pale.
Her hair was tangled.
But she was unmistakably Eleanor.
Beneath the photograph was a short message.
*STOP LOOKING FOR THE WOMAN YOU MARRIED. SHE IS NOT WHO YOU THINK SHE IS.*
Marcus stared at the screen.
Then another message arrived.
*AND IF YOU OPEN THE SECOND DOOR, YOUR DAUGHTER WILL LEARN WHAT HER MOTHER DID TO HER GRANDMOTHER.*
Marcus looked up.
“There's a second door?””
Vanessa's lips parted.
May you like
For the first time, she looked genuinely afraid.
And from beneath the mansion, three slow knocks echoed through the drainage system.
