Chapter 3: The Woman Behind the Door
For eleven months, Marcus had imagined finding Eleanor.
In some dreams, she was standing in their bedroom, wearing her favorite blue sweater, asking why he had taken so long to come home.
In others, she was lying somewhere in the woods, cold and alone.
He had imagined every possibility except this one.
His wife was alive.
And she was warning him not to trust someone.
“Eleanor, it's me!”” Marcus shouted through the glass.
“I'm here. I'm getting you out!””
A weak hand remained pressed against the window.
“Marcus, listen carefully.””
He leaned closer.
“I'm listening.””
“Don't let them take Ava.””
Marcus's stomach tightened.
“Who's going to take Ava?””
There was a pause.
Then Eleanor whispered:
“Vanessa.””
Marcus turned.
His brother was standing several feet behind him.
Daniel looked terrified.
“Marcus, we need to get out of here.””
Marcus didn't move.
“Why?””
“Because this place isn't safe.””
“Then tell me why my wife is locked behind that door.””
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
“It's complicated.””
Marcus slammed his fist against the wall.
“ELEVEN MONTHS, DANIEL!””
His voice echoed down the corridor.
“Eleven months I've been looking for her. I buried an empty coffin. I watched my daughter cry herself to sleep.
I sat in a courtroom and listened to people tell me my wife was probably dead. And you knew?””
Daniel looked down.
“I didn't know she was still alive.””
Marcus stepped toward him.
“You were in the photograph.””
“I was there that night. But I didn't know what Vanessa had planned.””
“Vanessa?””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“She told me Eleanor was having a breakdown. She said Eleanor had become unstable and was threatening to take Ava away from you.””
Marcus stared at him.
“And you believed her?””
“She showed me documents.””
“What documents?””
“Medical reports. Statements. Messages. She said Eleanor had been seeing someone and was preparing to leave the country.””
Marcus shook his head.
“Eleanor wasn't having an affair.””
Daniel looked away.
“I know that now.””
From behind the door, Eleanor struck the glass.
“Marcus!””
He turned immediately.
“I'm here, sweetheart.””
“Don't listen to Daniel. He knows about the room.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
Marcus looked at him.
“What room?””
Daniel said nothing.
Eleanor continued.
“There's another room behind this one. They keep the records there.””
Marcus approached the door.
“What records?””
“Everything.””
Her voice trembled.
“Your money. The company. The signatures. The documents they made me sign.””
Marcus frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
Eleanor took a breath.
“Vanessa didn't come into your life because she loved you.””
Silence.
“She came because of the Whitmore estate.””
Marcus stared at the glass.
He remembered how Vanessa had appeared at a charity gala eighteen months earlier.
How she had known exactly what to say about his late father.
How she had comforted him after Eleanor disappeared.
How she had quietly encouraged him to sell several properties and consolidate the family assets.
He had considered her practical.
Supportive.
Loyal.
Now those memories looked different.
“What did she do to you?”” he whispered.
Eleanor lowered her hand.
“She made me disappear.””
Marcus felt his knees weaken.
Behind him, Daniel spoke.
“Marcus, I swear I didn't help her hurt Eleanor.””
“You helped her hide my wife.””
“I thought she was going to be placed somewhere for treatment. Vanessa said Eleanor was dangerous.””
“And you didn't ask where she was?””
Daniel's eyes filled with tears.
“I was afraid.””
Marcus let out a bitter breath.
“Of what?””
Daniel didn't answer.
A sudden electronic beep sounded from the ceiling.
A small red light began flashing above the door.
Eleanor gasped.
“No.””
Marcus looked up.
“What?””
“She knows you're here.””
Daniel stepped backward.
“Who?””
Eleanor pressed both hands against the glass.
“Vanessa. She has access to the security system.””
Marcus pulled at the door handle.
It wouldn't move.
He tried again.
Locked.
“What's the code?”” he shouted.
Eleanor shook her head.
“They changed it.””
Marcus looked toward Daniel.
“You said you could explain. Then explain how we open this door!””
Daniel stared at the keypad.
“It's not controlled from here.””
“Where is it controlled?””
“The security room upstairs.””
Marcus grabbed his brother's shirt.
“Then we're going upstairs.””
A loud mechanical noise interrupted him.
Somewhere inside the walls, pumps started running.
The floor vibrated.
Water began trickling from a narrow drainage channel.
Eleanor backed away from the glass.
“Marcus!””
He turned.
“What?””
“The water!””
Marcus looked down.
A thin stream was spreading across the concrete floor.
Then another.
The underground room was beginning to flood.
Daniel rushed toward the staircase.
“We have to move!””
Marcus refused to leave.
“I'm not going without her.””
Eleanor pressed her forehead against the glass.
“Marcus, please. Take Ava and get out. The room has a second exit.””
“Where?””
“Behind the storage cabinet!””
Marcus spun around.
A large metal cabinet stood in the corner.
He pulled it aside.
Behind it was a narrow emergency passage with a ladder leading upward.
Daniel grabbed his arm.
“Come on!””
Marcus turned toward the door one last time.
“I'll be back.””
Eleanor nodded, tears running down her face.
“I know.””
Then she said something that stopped him.
“Marcus?””
“Yeah?””
“Look inside the red box.””
He frowned.
“What red box?””
“The one you brought upstairs tonight.””
His mind raced.
The ring box.
The proposal.
The red velvet box he'd left beside the pool.
“What does that have to do with anything?””
Eleanor's voice dropped.
“There's something inside it that Vanessa doesn't know I left for you.””
The pumps grew louder.
Water reached Marcus's ankles.
“Eleanor, what is it?””
She looked directly into his eyes.
“Your father's original will.””
Marcus froze.
His father had died four years earlier.
The will had been read, the estate divided, and the Whitmore family company placed under Marcus's control.
There had been one unusual condition.
If Marcus died without a biological heir, the estate would pass to his brother Daniel.
But Marcus had a daughter.
Ava.
And Eleanor had always insisted that something about the inheritance was wrong.
Marcus looked at Daniel.
His brother was staring at him with an expression he couldn't understand.
“Your father's will?”” Daniel repeated.
Marcus turned back to Eleanor.
“Why would it be in the ring box?””
“Because Vanessa needed you to marry her before the final transfer.””
The water was now above Marcus's ankles.
He grabbed Daniel and pushed him toward the emergency passage.
“Move!””
They climbed the ladder as the pumps roared below them.
Marcus emerged into the garden behind the mansion, soaked and gasping.
Daniel followed.
The terrace was nearly empty.
The guests had gone inside.
Ava was sitting on a stone bench, wrapped in a white towel, while a housekeeper held her hand.
The moment she saw Marcus, she jumped up.
“Daddy!””
He rushed toward her and lifted her into his arms.
“I'm here, sweetheart.””
“Did you find Mommy?””
Marcus swallowed.
“Yes.””
Ava's eyes widened.
“Is she coming home?””
He held her tighter.
“I'm going to bring her home.””
Then he looked toward the pool.
Vanessa stood beside the marble steps.
Her champagne dress was still immaculate.
In one hand, she held Marcus's red velvet ring box.
In the other, she held a small black device.
She looked at him.
Then she slowly opened the box.
The diamond ring glittered beneath the garden lights.
But there was something else inside.
A folded piece of paper.
Vanessa removed it, unfolded it, and smiled.
“Marcus,” she called softly.
“I think it's time you learned what your father really left you.””
She turned the paper around.
At the top was his father's signature.
Below it was a sentence that made Marcus's blood run cold.
*The sole beneficiary of the Whitmore estate is not Marcus Whitmore.*
Vanessa raised her eyes.
“It's your daughter, Marcus.””
Ava buried her face against his shoulder.
Daniel whispered, “That's impossible.””
Vanessa's smile returned.
“Not anymore.””
She pressed a button on the black device.
Deep beneath the pool, the pumps suddenly stopped.
And from somewhere underground came the sound of a heavy steel door locking.
Marcus looked toward the water.
His wife was still trapped below.
And now he understood something far more frightening than the existence of the secret room.
Vanessa hadn't been trying to keep Eleanor away from him.
She had been trying to keep Eleanor alive long enough to get something from her.
May you like
Something that belonged to Ava.
And whatever Vanessa had planned next, she was no longer pretending to be part of the family.
