Chapter 9: The Person I Never Suspected

I couldn’t move.

The image on the screen stared back at me.

Sarah.

And beside her…

My own brother.

Thomas.

For a moment, my mind refused to accept it.

Thomas was my younger brother.

The man who helped me after Michael died.

The man who stood beside me at the funeral.

The man who told me, “Family is all you have.””

I felt sick.

“No.””

David looked at me.

“Mom…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“That can’t be him.””

The footage continued.

Sarah handed Thomas a folder.

He opened it.

Looked through the papers.

Then nodded.

They weren’t strangers.

They weren’t meeting by accident.

They were working together.

David paused the video.

“Do you know why Uncle Thomas would do this?””

I sat down.

“I don’t know.””

But even as I said it, memories started returning.

Small moments.

Things I had ignored.

Thomas asking questions about my finances.

Thomas asking if I planned to stay in the house.

Thomas joking that David would “inherit everything eventually.””

At the time, I thought it was normal.

Family conversation.

Now every word sounded different.

“He always asked about the house,” I whispered.

David looked at me.

“How often?””

“More than I realized.””

He sat beside me.

“Mom, we need to know everything.””

I nodded.

The video showed more.

Sarah and Thomas sitting in my office.

Looking through drawers.

Opening cabinets.

Searching.

My hands tightened.

“They were here.””

David nodded.

“When?””

The date appeared.

Two years ago.

The same month Sarah first started dating him.

I felt a deep sadness.

Not anger.

Not even betrayal.

Just sadness.

Because sometimes the people who hurt you aren’t strangers.

They are people who know exactly where your heart is.

The video ended.

Another file appeared.

A document.

David opened it.

It was a list.

Names.

Dates.

Payments.

My eyes moved down the page.

Then stopped.

Sarah.

Thomas.

Jessica.

All connected.

All receiving money.

David whispered:

“Jessica too.””

I nodded.

“It was never just Sarah.””

The room became quiet.

Then David stood suddenly.

“I need to call Thomas.””

“No.””

He looked at me.

“Why?””

“Because if he knows we found this, he’ll know what evidence we have.””

David stopped.

I had never seen him look so serious.

“You’re right.””

I stared at the document.

“We need to understand the whole plan.””

Then my phone rang.

Thomas.

The timing was too perfect.

David looked at the screen.

“Don’t answer.””

I stared at his name.

My brother.

Someone I loved.

Someone who betrayed me.

I answered.

“Hello, Thomas.””

His voice sounded normal.

Too normal.

“Evelyn. I’ve been trying to reach you.””

“Why?””

A pause.

“Because I heard there’s been some family drama.””

I looked at David.

“What kind of drama?””

“I heard Sarah and David moved out.””

I said nothing.

Then Thomas sighed.

“I’m worried about you.””

The words almost made me laugh.

“Are you?””

“Of course.””

“Why?””

“Because you’ve always been too trusting.””

I felt a chill.

The exact words Michael had used.

“Thomas.””

“Yes?””

“Did Sarah ever visit my house before she married David?””

Silence.

Just for a second.

But it was enough.

He recovered quickly.

“Why would you ask that?””

“Answer me.””

Another pause.

Then his tone changed.

Cold.

“You found something.””

Not a question.

A statement.

My grip tightened around the phone.

“What did you do?””

Thomas laughed quietly.

“Evelyn, you have no idea how complicated this became.””

David stepped closer.

I put the phone on speaker.

Thomas continued.

“Michael should have minded his own business.””

My heart stopped.

“You knew?””

“Of course I knew.””

David’s face changed.

“You were involved?””

Thomas ignored him.

“Your husband was smart. I’ll give him that.””

I felt tears burning my eyes.

“You helped them.””

“I helped myself.””

The honesty was worse than a lie.

“Why?””

“Because Michael had everything.””

His voice hardened.

“The company. The house. The respect.””

“That’s what this was about?””

“No.””

A pause.

Then:

“It was about what he thought he could leave behind.””

I stood.

“You tried to take my home.””

“I tried to make sure things were fair.””

“Fair?””

I laughed.

“My husband died.””

“And you got everything.””

The words cut.

“You got the house. The money. The business.””

“My husband earned those things.””

Thomas sighed.

“And that’s exactly why you were a problem.””

David stepped forward.

“You used me.””

Thomas went silent.

Then he said:

“David, I did what I had to do.””

“No.””

David’s voice shook.

“You manipulated me.””

Thomas didn’t deny it.

“You were always easy to guide.””

That broke something in my son.

I saw it happen.

The realization.

The pain.

Then Thomas said the one thing none of us expected.

“But you’re too late.””

I froze.

“What?””

“You found the old files.””

His voice became calmer.

“But you don’t have the one thing that matters.””

“What?””

A pause.

Then:

“The original agreement.””

David looked at me.

“What agreement?””

Thomas laughed.

“The one that proves Michael changed everything before he died.””

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

My heart pounding.

Because suddenly I understood.

Michael’s warnings.

The hidden files.

The missing documents.

There was one final piece.

May you like

And whoever had it…

Had the power to destroy everything.
