Chapter 6: The Voice From Beyond

I stared at the message until the words blurred.

“Stop digging into the past, Evelyn, or you’ll lose more than your bedroom.””

David noticed my expression.

“What is it?””

I handed him the phone.

His face changed immediately.

“Who sent this?””

“I don’t know.””

He looked around the coffee shop.

“Did anyone follow us?””

I shook my head.

But suddenly, every person in the room looked suspicious.

The man reading a newspaper.

The woman typing on her laptop.

The employee wiping tables.

Fear has a strange way of changing ordinary things.

A place that felt safe five minutes earlier can suddenly feel like a trap.

David looked at me.

“We should leave.””

“No.””

He frowned.

“Mom.””

“No.””

I put the phone down.

“I spent years letting other people decide what I should fear.””

I looked toward the entrance.

“I’m done.””

He was quiet.

Then he nodded.

A few minutes later, Linda walked in.

She was in her late sixties.

Gray hair.

Tired eyes.

The kind of face that carried years of knowing things she couldn’t say.

She spotted us immediately.

“Evelyn?””

I stood.

“Yes.””

She hugged me gently.

“I’m sorry it took so long.””

I studied her.

“You knew my husband was afraid.””

She nodded.

“I did.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Her expression changed.

“Because Michael made me promise.””

“Why?””

She looked at David.

“Because of him.””

David stiffened.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

Linda sat down.

“Michael loved you more than anything.””

David looked away.

“But he also knew you had a weakness.””

I frowned.

“A weakness?””

“He knew you wanted to believe the best in people.””

The words hit David.

Because they were true.

Linda reached into her bag.

She pulled out a small black device.

“A recorder.””

My hands trembled.

“Is that it?””

She nodded.

“Michael recorded this three days before he died.””

David stared.

“Why didn’t he just tell us?””

Linda looked at him sadly.

“Because he was afraid you would make the wrong choice.””

She placed the recorder on the table.

I pressed play.

Static filled the air.

Then…

Michael’s voice.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakably him.

“Evelyn, if you’re hearing this, I’m gone.””

I covered my mouth.

Hearing him again after so many years felt impossible.

“First, I need you to know something.””

A pause.

“I never doubted your strength.””

My eyes filled.

“But I worried about David.””

David looked down.

Michael continued.

“He is kind. He is loyal. But sometimes those qualities make him easy to manipulate.””

David closed his eyes.

The recording continued.

“I found evidence that someone has been trying to gain access to my company accounts.””

My heart pounded.

“I don’t know who it is yet.””

A pause.

“But I know they are close.””

Linda looked at us.

Michael’s voice continued.

“If David ever brings someone into our lives who pushes him to separate from his mother, question it.””

David froze.

My breath caught.

Then came the sentence that changed everything.

“Because the person who wants to isolate someone usually wants something from them.””

The recording stopped.

Nobody spoke.

Then David whispered:

“He knew.””

Linda nodded.

“He suspected.””

I looked at her.

“Did he ever find proof?””

Linda hesitated.

“Yes.””

My heart jumped.

“What proof?””

She looked uncomfortable.

“Michael discovered financial transfers.””

“To who?””

“I don’t know.””

“Why not?””

“Because before he could finish investigating, he got sick.””

Silence.

Then David stood.

“Where are those records?””

Linda looked at him.

“Hidden.””

“Where?””

She looked at me.

“Somewhere your husband believed only you would find.””

I frowned.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

I shook my head.

“I don’t understand.””

Linda leaned closer.

“Michael knew you would protect the family.””

A tear slipped down my cheek.

Even at the end…

He still believed in me.

Then my phone rang.

This time, it wasn’t unknown.

It was Sarah.

David looked at the screen.

“Don’t answer.””

I stared at it.

After everything…

After the lies…

After the threats…

Part of me still wanted answers.

I picked up.

“Hello?””

Sarah’s voice was calm.

Too calm.

“Evelyn.””

“Yes?””

“I think we need to talk.””

“About what?””

A pause.

Then:

“About the fact that your son just found out what you’ve been hiding.””

My body went still.

I looked at David.

“What are you talking about?””

Sarah laughed softly.

“You really thought Michael only left secrets for you?””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Sarah…”

“You should ask your son what happened the night before his father died.””

I looked at David.

His face had gone pale.

“Why?””

Sarah whispered:

“Because David wasn’t the only one who received a letter.””

The call ended.

And for the first time since Michael’s warning…

May you like

I wondered if the truth wasn’t only about Sarah.

Maybe there was something my own son had kept from me.
