Chapter 9: The Truth Emma Tried to Protect
Jason stood beneath the bridge lights holding Emma’s letter like it was a weapon.
Maybe to him, it was.
Because some people don’t need money or power to control others.
They only need secrets.
And Jason had spent years collecting them.
I stared at the envelope in his hand.
My daughter’s name was written across the front.
Not mine.
Not his.
Maya’s.
The last words her mother ever wanted her to have.
“Give me the letter.””
My voice was calm.
Too calm.
Jason smiled.
“That’s all you have to say?””
I took a step forward.
“Give me the letter.””
He shook his head.
“You really haven’t changed.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“You always think love fixes everything.””
Claire looked at him.
“Jason, stop.””
He laughed.
“Now you care?””
Her face tightened.
“You’re the reason this happened.””
Jason looked at her.
“No.””
He held up the envelope.
“She’s the reason this happened.””
My body went still.
“What?””
Jason smiled.
“Claire was supposed to stay away from you.””
I looked at Claire.
She looked down.
“Explain.””
Jason walked closer.
“Emma knew too much.””
The wind moved through the trees.
The river below kept flowing.
Like the world wasn’t changing.
Like my entire life wasn’t being rewritten.
“What did Emma know?””
Jason looked at Claire.
Then back at me.
“She knew Claire was connected to me.””
I stared.
“Yes.””
“And she knew about the trust.””
“Yes.””
“And she knew I wanted access.””
My hands tightened.
“So you killed her.””
Jason’s smile disappeared.
“No.””
The answer came quickly.
Almost too quickly.
“I didn’t kill Emma.””
“Then why are you afraid of the letter?””
His expression changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
Fear.
“The letter doesn’t prove anything.””
“Then why keep it?””
Silence.
Jason looked away.
That was enough.
I stepped closer.
“What’s in it?””
He tightened his grip on the envelope.
“You really want to know?””
“Yes.””
“You might regret it.””
I almost laughed.
“Do you know how many nights I sat next to my daughter while she cried because she thought she didn’t belong?””
Jason said nothing.
“How many years I blamed myself for losing Emma?””
His expression shifted.
“I know.””
“No.””
My voice became sharper.
“You don’t.””
I pointed at the envelope.
“You don’t know what that letter means.””
Jason looked at me.
“Actually, I do.””
He lifted it.
“I read it.””
My heart dropped.
“You what?””
“I needed to know what Emma wrote.””
Claire whispered:
“Jason…”
He ignored her.
“She figured everything out.””
“What everything?””
He smiled.
“That’s what makes Emma dangerous.””
I froze.
Past tense.
Not “made.””
Dangerous.
Like even after death, he feared her.
“She discovered Claire was investigating me.””
I looked at Claire.
“Investigating?””
Claire nodded slowly.
“I was trying to help Emma.””
I stared.
“You just said you helped him.””
“I did.””
Her voice broke.
“But later, I realized what he was doing.””
Jason laughed.
“Later?””
Claire looked at him.
“I tried to fix it.””
“You tried to save yourself.””
She didn’t argue.
Because it was true.
I looked back at Jason.
“What did Emma find?””
Jason walked around slowly.
“She found out I wasn’t the only person interested in Maya’s trust.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
He looked at Claire.
“She never told you?””
Claire looked confused.
“I don’t know what you mean.””
Jason smiled.
“Of course you don’t.””
I stepped forward.
“Who else?””
Jason looked at me.
“You.””
The word hit like a punch.
I stared.
“What?””
“You heard me.””
I shook my head.
“That’s impossible.””
“Is it?””
“Yes.””
“Emma didn’t think so.””
I felt the world tilt.
“Explain.””
Jason opened the folder.
Inside were documents.
Copies.
Photos.
Records.
He pulled one out.
A bank statement.
My name.
My signature.
I stared at it.
I didn’t understand.
“What is this?””
“Your account.””
I looked closer.
There were transfers.
Large amounts.
Money moved years ago.
Before Emma died.
“I never did this.””
Jason smiled.
“That’s what Emma believed.””
“No.””
“She thought someone was using your identity.””
I stared.
My heart pounding.
“Who?””
Jason didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked at Claire.
And that was when I understood.
“Claire?””
Her face went pale.
“No.””
“Tell me.””
“Mark…”
“Tell me.””
She started crying.
“I didn’t know.””
Jason laughed.
“She always says that.””
Claire looked at him.
“Shut up.””
“You didn’t know what I was doing.””
“I trusted you.””
“And that was your mistake.””
I looked between them.
“You used her.””
Jason shrugged.
“She was useful.””
Claire closed her eyes.
I saw the pain on her face.
Not the fake kind.
Real pain.
But it didn’t erase what happened.
I looked at Jason.
“What did you do with my account?””
“I moved money.””
“Why?””
“To create pressure.””
“What pressure?””
Jason smiled.
“The kind that makes people desperate.””
I felt sick.
“You wanted me to look guilty.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because Emma was about to expose everything.””
I stared.
“And you thought framing me would stop her?””
“No.””
He looked at the river.
“I thought losing you would break her.””
The words made no sense.
Then they did.
Emma.
He wasn’t trying to hurt me.
He was trying to hurt Emma.
Because he knew she would fight for me.
“She found out.””
Jason nodded.
“She did.””
“And the accident?””
His expression became cold.
“I didn’t plan it.””
Claire stepped forward.
“You’re lying.””
Jason looked at her.
“You weren’t there.””
“I know what happened.””
“Do you?””
Her face changed.
I looked at Claire.
“What do you mean?””
She whispered:
“Emma wasn’t driving alone.””
My breath stopped.
“What?””
Claire looked at me.
“Someone was following her.””
Jason’s face hardened.
“Enough.””
“No.””
Claire shook her head.
“You destroyed enough lives.””
I looked at Jason.
“Who was following her?””
Nobody answered.
Then Claire said:
“Me.””
The confession shocked me.
“You?””
She nodded.
“I followed her that night.””
“Why?””
“Because I wanted to warn her.””
I stared.
“Warn her?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
Claire looked down.
“Because when I arrived…”
She stopped.
The pain on her face was different now.
Real.
“I saw what happened.””
The bridge became silent.
“What did you see?””
Claire swallowed.
“Emma’s car was already damaged.””
My hands went numb.
“Damaged?””
“Yes.””
“By who?””
She looked at Jason.
And Jason stepped back.
Just slightly.
But enough.
“Jason.””
His face hardened.
“You have no proof.””
Claire looked at him.
“Emma recorded everything.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Claire nodded.
“She knew she might not survive.””
Jason’s expression changed.
“Where is it?””
Claire smiled sadly.
“I don’t know.””
Jason stepped toward her.
“Where is it?””
She didn’t move.
“Emma gave it to someone she trusted.””
Jason looked at me.
And suddenly I understood.
The letter.
The necklace.
The recording.
Everything Emma left behind.
She had created a trail.
A way to reveal the truth if something happened.
Jason looked furious now.
Not calm.
Not confident.
Desperate.
“Where is it?””
Claire said nothing.
I looked at the envelope.
Then at Jason.
Then at Claire.
And I realized something.
They were both hiding things.
But only one of them was still trying to protect Maya.
I reached out.
“Jason.””
He looked at me.
“You’re not leaving with that letter.””
He smiled.
“You think you can stop me?””
I looked down at the ground.
Then back at him.
“No.””
I pointed behind him.
“But someone else can.””
Jason turned.
Blue and red lights flashed across the bridge.
Police cars.
Multiple vehicles.
Jason froze.
Claire looked shocked.
I held up my phone.
“I called before I came.””
Jason stared at me.
“You recorded everything.””
I didn’t answer.
Because he already knew.
The officers approached.
Jason looked at the envelope one last time.
Then dropped it.
It landed on the pavement.
I picked it up.
My hands shaking.
Because after all these years…
I was finally holding Emma’s last message to our daughter.
But before I opened it, I noticed something.
There was another name written on the back.
Not Maya.
Not Emma.
Mine.
*Mark.*
Underneath were six words.
May you like
Six words that made me realize the letter wasn’t only about the past.
*You deserve to know the truth.*
