Chapter 8: The Place Where Emma Took Her Last Breath
I knew the place before I even started the car.
The old bridge outside town.
The bridge where Emma’s car went off the road.
The bridge where my entire life split into two versions.
Before.
And after.
For years, I avoided that road.
I took longer routes to work.
I turned away whenever I saw the exit sign.
I told myself I was protecting my memories.
But maybe I was protecting myself from the truth.
I looked at the clock.
11:47 p.m.
Maya was asleep upstairs.
I had left a note for my neighbor, Mrs. Wilson, asking her to check on her if she woke up.
I hated leaving.
Every instinct told me not to.
But I needed answers.
And Claire knew that.
She knew I would come.
Because she knew Emma.
Because she knew me.
That was the part I couldn’t stop thinking about.
I drove through the empty streets.
The same streets I had driven that night years ago.
Except back then, I was racing toward the hospital.
Tonight, I was racing toward the truth.
When I reached the bridge, I saw her car.
Claire’s SUV was parked on the side.
The headlights were off.
I parked behind her.
For a moment, I just sat there.
Hands on the steering wheel.
Heart pounding.
Then I stepped out.
The night air was cold.
The river below moved quietly.
Too quietly.
Claire stood near the railing.
She looked different.
Not the confident woman who always had an answer.
Not the person who controlled every conversation.
She looked tired.
Broken.
But I didn’t let that distract me.
Not anymore.
“You came.””
Her voice was low.
I stopped a few feet away.
“You knew I would.””
She looked at the water.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because you need to know.””
I almost laughed.
“Now?””
She turned toward me.
“I should have told you years ago.””
“Yes.””
She looked down.
“I know.””
The honesty surprised me.
But I didn’t trust it.
Not yet.
“Where’s Emma’s letter?””
Claire looked away.
“I don’t have it.””
My expression changed.
“Then why bring me here?””
“Because this is where everything started.””
I felt anger rise.
“No. Everything started when you entered my life.””
Her face tightened.
“You really believe that?””
“I don’t know what to believe anymore.””
“That’s fair.””
The answer caught me off guard.
Claire walked toward the railing.
“Emma didn’t die because of you.””
I froze.
“I never thought she did.””
“Yes, you did.””
“No.””
“You spent years blaming yourself.””
I looked away.
Because she was right.
A part of me had.
If I had picked her up.
If I had called her.
If I had stopped her from driving.
If I had done something differently.
Guilt was a quiet prison.
And I had lived inside it for years.
Claire continued.
“Emma knew that.””
“Knew what?””
“That you would destroy yourself trying to understand why.””
I stared at her.
“How did you know Emma?””
She was silent.
Then she said:
“We worked together.””
My eyebrows narrowed.
“What?””
“Before I met you.””
“Where?””
Claire took a breath.
“At a nonprofit organization.””
I shook my head.
“Emma never mentioned you.””
“Because she didn’t trust me.””
The words landed.
“Why?””
Claire looked at the bridge.
“Because I made mistakes.””
“What kind of mistakes?””
She didn’t answer immediately.
“I got involved with people I shouldn’t have.””
My stomach tightened.
“Jason?””
She nodded.
“Jason was already manipulating things before I realized it.””
I stared at her.
“You expect me to believe you were a victim?””
“I don’t expect anything from you.””
“Then tell me the truth.””
She looked at me.
“Jason knew about Emma’s family money.””
There it was.
The thing everyone kept circling.
The thing nobody wanted to say.
“The trust.””
Claire nodded.
“Emma discovered it too.””
“How?””
“She found documents.””
“What documents?””
“Documents showing someone had tried to access information about Maya’s trust.””
My heart started beating faster.
“Who?””
Claire looked away.
“Jason.””
The river moved below us.
A cold wind passed between us.
“And you?””
Claire swallowed.
“I helped him.””
The admission hit harder than I expected.
“You helped him?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Her eyes filled.
“Because I was stupid.””
I said nothing.
“I thought he was protecting me.””
“From what?””
“My past.””
I stared.
“What past?””
She looked down.
“Before I met you, I had debts.””
I waited.
“Jason promised he could fix them.””
My jaw tightened.
“So he used you.””
“Yes.””
“And then you came into my life.””
She nodded.
“At first, I didn’t know about you.””
“Then what happened?””
“Jason showed me your picture.””
My blood ran cold.
“He showed you my picture?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because he knew you were vulnerable.””
I felt sick.
“After Emma died.””
Claire closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
The silence was unbearable.
“You approached me because Jason told you to?””
At first, she didn’t answer.
Then:
“Yes.””
The word felt like a physical blow.
All the years.
All the memories.
All the moments I thought were real.
“Was any of it real?””
Claire looked at me.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
I shook my head.
“I don’t know how to believe that.””
“I know.””
“You came into my home because of Maya’s trust.””
“No.””
“Then why?””
“Because after I met you, everything changed.””
I looked away.
“I started caring about you.””
“And Maya?””
Her expression broke.
“I loved her.””
I almost couldn’t stand hearing that.
Because love and cruelty should not exist in the same person.
“But then Jason reminded me why I came.””
She looked down.
“He threatened me.””
“With what?””
“He had proof of my past.””
“And you were afraid.””
“Yes.””
“So you decided to sacrifice my daughter.””
Claire started crying.
“I thought I could control it.””
“You couldn’t.””
“No.””
She wiped her face.
“I became the thing I hated.””
I didn’t respond.
Because I wanted to feel sorry for her.
A part of me did.
But another part saw Maya sitting alone eating crust.
A child who thought she was unwanted.
“You kept Emma’s letter.””
Claire looked away.
“Yes.””
“Where?””
“I gave it to Jason.””
My heart dropped.
“What?””
“He said he would keep it safe.””
“You gave him Emma’s final message to her daughter?””
“I was trying to protect it.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“You were protecting yourself.””
She didn’t argue.
“Where is he now?””
“I don’t know.””
“You called him tonight.””
She looked surprised.
“You heard?””
“He answered.””
Her face changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
“Mark, you need to understand something.””
“What?””
“Jason doesn’t want Maya gone because of the trust.””
I stared.
“Then why?””
Claire looked toward the bridge.
“Because Emma found out what he did.””
My chest tightened.
“What did he do?””
Claire whispered:
“He caused the accident.””
The world went silent.
I couldn’t move.
“What?””
“Emma was going to report him.””
“No.””
“She had evidence.””
“No.””
My mind rejected it.
Because accidents were easier.
Accidents meant nobody was responsible.
Accidents meant there was no monster.
Claire stepped closer.
“Emma’s car wasn’t supposed to crash.””
I stared at her.
“What evidence?””
“The letter.””
My heart started pounding.
“The letter says everything.””
“Where is it?””
“I don’t know.””
“You said Jason has it.””
“Yes.””
“Then we find him.””
Claire shook her head.
“It’s too late.””
“What does that mean?””
Her face went pale.
Before she could answer, headlights appeared behind us.
A car.
Moving slowly.
Stopping.
Claire’s expression changed instantly.
“No.””
I turned.
The driver’s door opened.
A man stepped out.
Jason.
But he wasn’t alone.
He was holding something in his hand.
A folder.
Old.
Worn.
The same color as the envelope from the photograph.
My breath caught.
Emma’s letter.
Jason smiled.
“I wondered how long it would take you to finally ask the right questions.””
Claire stepped in front of me.
“Jason, don’t.””
He laughed softly.
“Still protecting him?””
I stared at the folder.
Then at the man who had been hiding pieces of my life for years.
Jason lifted the envelope.
“Your wife left this for your daughter.””
He smiled.
“But before Maya ever reads it…”
May you like
He looked directly at me.
“…you need to know what Emma discovered about you.””
