Chapter 12: The Final Piece of Rachel’s Warning
The photo was blurry.
Old.
But I recognized the people.
Rachel.
And Melissa.
Standing outside a courthouse.
Together.
My first thought was impossible.
Rachel and Melissa?
Before everything happened?
I enlarged the picture.
There was a date.
Three months before Rachel died.
My hands went cold.
“Dad?””
Jasmine looked over my shoulder.
“Who is that?””
I didn’t answer.
Because I didn’t know.
And I hated that.
I hated not knowing things about my own family.
I called Melissa.
She answered after one ring.
“David?””
“Where were you three months before Rachel died?””
Silence.
“What?””
“You heard me.””
Another pause.
Then:
“Why?””
“Because I have a picture.””
The silence changed.
Fear.
Again.
“David…”
“Tell me the truth.””
She sighed.
“I met Rachel.””
My chest tightened.
“You met her?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“She contacted me.””
“About what?””
Melissa didn’t answer.
“Melissa.””
Finally:
“About Jasmine.””
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
Everything always came back to Jasmine.
“What did Rachel want?””
Melissa’s voice became quiet.
“She wanted to know if I was capable of loving Jasmine.””
That surprised me.
“She interviewed you?””
“No.””
She paused.
“She confronted me.””
I listened.
“She told me she knew I was insecure about her.””
My jaw tightened.
“And?””
“She said she would not allow anyone to make Jasmine feel unwanted.””
I looked at the picture.
“So why were you at a courthouse?””
Melissa didn’t answer.
“Melissa.””
“I went there with Rachel.””
“Why?””
“Because she wanted to change something.””
My heart raced.
“What?””
“A legal document.””
I stood.
“What document?””
Melissa whispered:
“The guardianship papers.””
Everything went quiet.
My father.
Melissa.
Daniel.
The plan.
It all connected.
“Rachel was changing her guardianship papers?””
“Yes.””
“To who?””
Melissa’s voice shook.
“To you.””
I froze.
“She wanted to make sure no one could take Jasmine away from you.””
The room felt silent.
“Then why didn’t I know?””
“Because she never finished.””
“Why?””
Melissa hesitated.
“Because she got worse.””
I sat down.
All this time, I thought Rachel had been afraid I wasn’t enough.
But she had been fighting to make sure everyone knew I was enough.
I asked:
“Then why did you hurt Jasmine?””
A long silence.
Then:
“Because I hated that she trusted you more than me.””
The honesty was painful.
“I thought if I became necessary, she would love me.””
I closed my eyes.
“You don’t make someone love you by hurting them.””
“I know.””
Her voice broke.
“I know now.””
That afternoon, I met my father again.
This time, he looked defeated.
Not powerful.
Not certain.
Just old.
“I owe you an apology.””
I sat across from him.
“You owe Jasmine one.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
“Why did you interfere?””
He looked down.
“Because after Rachel died, I saw you falling apart.””
“So you decided I couldn’t raise my own daughter?””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“I thought you would destroy yourself trying.””
I stared at him.
“You didn’t trust me.””
“I was afraid.””
I nodded slowly.
“There it is.””
“What?””
“The excuse everyone uses.””
He looked hurt.
But I continued.
“Fear doesn’t give people permission to control others.””
He looked away.
“You’re right.””
For the first time, my father admitted it.
“I should have trusted you.””
I left his house knowing something.
Not everyone who hurts you is evil.
Some people are afraid.
Some people are selfish.
Some people make choices they regret.
But the damage is still real.
Weeks later, Jasmine and I watched Rachel’s video again.
This time, we watched the entire thing.
At the very end, Rachel looked directly into the camera.
And she smiled.
“Jasmine, if you ever watch this…”
My daughter froze.
Rachel continued.
“I need you to know something.””
Jasmine reached for my hand.
“You were never a burden.””
A tear rolled down Jasmine’s face.
“You were never the reason things were hard.””
Rachel smiled.
“You were the best thing that ever happened to us.””
The video ended.
Jasmine cried.
But this time, they were different tears.
Not tears of fear.
Not tears of feeling unwanted.
They were tears of finally hearing what she needed all along.
Then my phone buzzed.
A new message.
From Thomas.

One final sentence.
*There is one more thing Rachel left behind, and this time it was meant only for Jasmine.*
