Chapter 10: The Video Rachel Left Behind
I drove home faster than I should have.
Not because I was angry.
Because I was terrified.
For years, I had believed the worst thing that happened to my family was losing Rachel.
Then I believed the worst thing was discovering Melissa’s cruelty.
But now there was something else.
Something Rachel knew before she died.
Something she was afraid to tell me.
When I arrived home, Jasmine was sitting on the couch with my old laptop in front of her.
She looked pale.
The kind of pale someone becomes when they have heard something they were never meant to hear.
“Jasmine.””
She looked up.
“I didn’t know if I should show you.””
I sat beside her.
“You did the right thing.””
She turned the laptop toward me.
On the screen was a video file.
The date was two weeks before Rachel passed away.
My chest tightened.
I clicked play.
For a few seconds, there was only darkness.
Then Rachel appeared.
My breath stopped.
Even after all these years, seeing her face felt impossible.
She looked tired.
But she was smiling.
“David,” she said softly.
I grabbed the edge of the table.
Hearing her voice again broke something inside me.
“If you’re watching this, it means I wasn’t able to tell you everything myself.””
Rachel looked down for a moment.
“I hope I’m wrong about what I’m about to say.””
The video shook slightly.
She was probably holding the camera herself.
“David, I need you to listen carefully. This is not about blaming anyone. This is about protecting Jasmine.””
Jasmine reached for my hand.
I held hers.
Rachel continued.
“When I got sick, I started noticing changes.””
My heart sank.
“I noticed people around us making decisions about Jasmine without asking Jasmine.””
The screen showed Rachel taking a deep breath.
“She is seventeen now, but when I recorded this, she was still a child. She was grieving. She was scared. And some people saw that.””
I felt anger rising.
“Rachel,” I whispered.
She continued.
“I need you to understand something. Melissa is not the only person involved.””
Jasmine looked at me.
My stomach tightened.
Not the only person.
Rachel looked directly into the camera.
“David, the person you need to be careful of is someone you trust completely.””
The video paused.
Not literally.
But my mind did.
Someone I trusted completely.
There were only a few people.
Rachel continued.
“I found out someone was trying to convince you that you weren’t capable of raising Jasmine alone.””
My hands curled into fists.
Daniel.
But then Rachel said:
“And the person who started this conversation was not Daniel.””
I froze.
Jasmine looked confused.
“What?””
I stared at the screen.
Rachel’s voice became softer.
“It was someone closer.””
The video glitched.
Then her voice returned.
“I found messages. I found conversations. They were not about helping you, David. They were about controlling your choices after I was gone.””
My heart pounded.
“Who?”” I whispered.
Rachel looked away.
Almost like she was struggling with whether to say the name.
Then she did.
And I felt the world tilt.
“Your father.””
The room went silent.
I stopped breathing.
My father.
Jasmine’s grandfather.
The man who had barely spoken since Rachel died.
The man who had always seemed distant.
The video continued.
“David, I know this will hurt you.””
Rachel’s eyes filled with tears.
“But your father believes he knows what is best for this family. He believes Jasmine needs to be raised differently. He believes you are too emotional to make decisions.””
I couldn’t move.
My father?
The person who taught me how to be a man?
The person who always told me to protect my family?
Rachel continued.
“He contacted Melissa after I became sick.””
Jasmine covered her mouth.
“No…”
I looked at her.
“He did this?””
I didn’t know.
That was the worst part.
I didn’t know.
Rachel’s voice cracked.
“Melissa made mistakes. She hurt Jasmine. But she was not the beginning.””
The video ended.
The screen went black.
Nobody moved.
For several seconds, the only sound was the clock on the wall.
Then Jasmine whispered:
“Grandpa?””
I couldn’t answer.
Because my father was the last person I expected.
The next morning, I drove to his house.
I didn’t call first.
I didn’t warn him.
When he opened the door, his expression changed immediately.
“David?””
He looked surprised.
Then concerned.
“What happened?””
I stepped inside.
“You tell me.””
His face tightened.
“What does that mean?””
I placed my phone on the table.
The video was paused on Rachel’s face.
My father looked at the screen.
And I watched his reaction.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
That was all I needed.
“You knew.””
He looked away.
“David.””
“You knew.””
He sat down slowly.
“I was trying to protect you.””
The same words.
Everyone used the same words.
Protect.
Help.
Family.
But somehow, every time, someone got hurt.
“You went behind my back.””
“I was worried.””
“About what?””
He looked at me.
“You were falling apart.””
I laughed.
“I lost my wife.””
“Yes.””
“And you thought taking control of my daughter’s life would help?””
His jaw tightened.
“I thought you weren’t thinking clearly.””
“My daughter needed me.””
“She needed stability.””
“She needed her father.””
Silence.
Then he said something I never expected.
“Rachel agreed with me at first.””
I froze.
“What?””
“She was scared.””
“No.””
“She knew you were struggling.””
I stepped closer.
“Don’t use my wife to justify what you did.””
My father looked down.
“I made mistakes.””
I stared at him.
“How many?””
He didn’t answer.
That scared me.
“How many?””
Finally, he whispered:
“Enough.””
I left.
But before I reached my car, he called after me.
“David!””
I turned.
His face looked older.
Broken.
“There is one more thing you need to know.””
I waited.
He swallowed.
“The reason Rachel found out…”
He paused.
“Was because she was investigating something else.””
“What?””
My father looked at me.
“Something about Jasmine’s birth.””
My blood went cold.
“What are you talking about?””
He didn’t answer.
Because my phone rang.
A message from an unknown number appeared.
May you like
One sentence.
*Ask your father who Jasmine’s real biological father is.*
