Chapter 9: The Last Witness

The officer's gun remained pointed at me.

“Step away from the desk,” he repeated.

I didn't move.

Daniel was still on the floor, struggling with the man who had attacked him.

Mom was crouched behind the desk.

Vanessa stood near the doorway.

And Anthony watched all of us with the calm expression of a man who believed the ending had already been written.

I raised my hands.

“I'm moving.””

The officer nodded.

“Slowly.””

I stepped away from the desk.

Mom whispered, “David.””

“Stay there.””

Anthony smiled.

“Good.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She was trembling.

“Who is he?””

“The officer?””

“Yes.””

She shook her head.

“I don't know his name.””

Anthony laughed.

“You always were terrible at lying.””

Vanessa turned toward him.

“You promised me.””

“I promised you nothing.””

“You said David would be left alone.””

Anthony's expression hardened.

“He was supposed to sign.””

I looked at her.

“Sign what?””

She stared at me.

“The trust documents.””

“And then?””

Her lips trembled.

“Then you were supposed to disappear.””

The words hit harder than any physical blow.

I stared at my wife.

“Disappear?””

She began crying.

“I didn't want that.””

“But you agreed.””

“I was trapped.””

“You had twelve years.””

“I know.””

“Did you love me?””

She looked down.

“I don't know anymore.””

That answer hurt more than a lie.

Anthony raised his hand.

“Enough.””

The officer stepped closer.

“Where is the memory card?””

I said nothing.

Anthony's eyes moved around the room.

“Find it.””

The officer began searching beneath the furniture.

Daniel suddenly shouted.

“David!””

I looked at him.

He had the other attacker pinned against the wall.

“Run!””

The officer turned.

Daniel shoved the man into him.

The gun fired.

The sound exploded through the room.

Mom screamed.

I grabbed her and pulled her toward the side exit.

Vanessa ran after us.

“David!””

We reached the hallway.

Anthony shouted.

“Stop them!””

Footsteps thundered behind us.

I pushed open the emergency door.

Cold rain hit my face.

We ran.

Mom stumbled.

I caught her.

“Are you okay?””

“Yes.””

“Keep going.””

We crossed the parking lot.

A car screeched to a stop beside us.

I pulled Mom toward it.

The driver's window rolled down.

Richard Hale.

“Get in!””

We climbed inside.

Vanessa jumped into the back seat.

“Drive!””

Richard didn't hesitate.

The car shot forward.

Behind us, two men emerged from the bank.

Anthony stood beneath the awning.

He didn't chase us.

He simply watched.

I looked through the rear window.

He raised his phone.

Then he smiled.

“What did he do?”” I asked.

Richard's hands tightened on the steering wheel.

“He knew we'd escape.””

“What?””

“He wanted you to run.””

“Why?””

Richard looked at me in the mirror.

“Because now you're carrying the evidence.””

I felt the memory card in my pocket.

“No.””

I pulled it out.

It wasn't there.

My stomach dropped.

“I lost it.””

Vanessa suddenly reached forward.

“I have it.””

She opened her hand.

The tiny black card sat in her palm.

I stared at her.

“How?””

“When you pulled me out of the hallway, I saw it under the desk.””

“Why did you take it?””

“Because Anthony was looking for it.””

“Then give it to me.””

She hesitated.

“Not yet.””

I stared at her.

“You've got some nerve.””

“I know.””

“After everything you've done?””

“I know.””

“Then why are you still protecting that card?””

She looked out the window.

“Because what's on it will prove something you don't want to hear.””

“What?””

She turned toward me.

“That your father wasn't killed by Anthony.””

Silence.

Richard's hands tightened.

“Vanessa.””

She looked at him.

“Tell him.””

Richard didn't answer.

I felt the world shift.

“You knew.””

Richard swallowed.

“I knew there was another possibility.””

“Which is?””

Vanessa whispered,

“Your father killed himself.””

Mom stared at her.

“No.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“He didn't.””

“Then what are you saying?””

“He staged his death.””

I shook my head.

“That's insane.””

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“Your father knew Anthony was going to kill him.””

“So he faked his death?””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“He made it look like he died.””

“Why?””

“Because he wanted Anthony to believe he had won.””

I stared at her.

“Then where was my father?””

Vanessa looked down.

“Alive.””

Mom grabbed her arm.

“Where?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

“Where was my husband?””

“He disappeared.””

“When?””

“The night he supposedly died.””

My head spun.

“Why didn't anyone find him?””

“Because Anthony controlled the hospital records.””

Richard finally spoke.

“He also controlled the police report.””

I stared at him.

“You knew?””

“I suspected.””

“You all knew!””

I slammed my hand against the seat.

“And nobody told me?””

Vanessa began crying.

“Your father told me to protect you.””

“You?””

“Yes.””

“You married me to protect me?””

“At first.””

I laughed bitterly.

“At first?””

She nodded.

“I was supposed to get close to you so I could monitor whether Anthony was looking for the trust.””

“And then?””

“I fell in love with you.””

The car became silent.

I couldn't tell whether I believed her.

She continued.

“But by then, it was too late.””

“What happened?””

“Anthony found out.””

“And he threatened you.””

“He threatened you.””

I stared at her.

“He said if I didn't help him access the trust, he'd kill you.””

Mom whispered, “So you stole my money.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“I needed to make it look like I was loyal to him.””

“That doesn't excuse it.””

“I know.””

“Nothing does.””

“I know.””

I looked at the memory card.

“Then what's on this?””

Vanessa finally handed it to me.

“Your father's final message.””

We stopped at a motel outside the city.

Richard locked the doors.

I inserted the card into my laptop.

One file appeared.

*DAVID_FINAL.mp4*

I clicked it.

My father appeared on screen.

Older.

Tired.

Alive.

I stopped breathing.

Mom made a sound beside me that I had never heard before.

“Robert…”

My father's eyes looked directly into the camera.

“If you're watching this, David, then Vanessa failed to keep you away.””

I stared at the screen.

Dad continued.

“I know you'll hate her.””

Vanessa began crying.

“But before you do, understand this.””

He leaned closer.

“Anthony isn't the person you need to fear.””

My heart pounded.

Dad looked behind him.

Then whispered:

“The person who betrayed me is someone you still trust.””

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Richard.

He was staring at the floor.

Then Mom whispered,

“David…”

I turned.

She was looking at Richard.

“Your father said the same thing to me.””

I stared at him.

Richard slowly raised his eyes.

“I can explain.””

I stood.

“Then explain.””

He didn't move.

“David…”

“Who betrayed my father?””

Richard's face collapsed.

And before he could answer, someone knocked on the motel door.

Three slow knocks.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

A man's voice came from outside.

“David?””

I recognized it instantly.

May you like

My father's voice.

“It's me.””
