Chapter 8: The Recording
The bank's emergency lights cast everything in a dim red glow.
Mom was gripping my arm so tightly that her fingernails pressed into my skin.
I could hear her breathing.
Fast.
Shallow.
Daniel stood between us and the door.
“Anthony,” he said, “this ends tonight.””
A quiet laugh came from the hallway.
“You've been saying that for nine years.””
I looked at Daniel.
“You know him.””
“Yes.””
“Then tell me how many people he has.””
Daniel didn't answer.
Anthony knocked again.
“David.””
I stepped toward the door.
“Don't,” Daniel whispered.
Anthony spoke through the wood.
“Your father made the same mistake.””
“What mistake?””
“Trusting people who were afraid to act.””
I felt my jaw tighten.
“You killed him?””
Silence.
Then:
“No.””
Mom exhaled.
Anthony continued.
“But I know who did.””
My heart stopped.
“Who?””
“You're asking the wrong question again.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Don't listen to him.””
Anthony laughed.
“You see? Daniel still thinks he can control the story.””
I turned.
“Daniel?””
He wouldn't meet my eyes.
Anthony continued.
“Ask him what happened in the hospital that night.””
Daniel's face changed.
I stepped closer.
“What happened?””
“David,” Daniel said quietly, “don't.””
“What happened?””
He closed his eyes.
“Your father woke up.””
Mom gasped.
“What?””
“He woke up after the first cardiac arrest.””
I stared at him.
“You said he died.””
“He was unconscious.””
“That isn't what you said.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
I felt anger rising.
“Tell me.””
Daniel swallowed.
“He woke up for eleven minutes.””
“What did he say?””
“He asked for you.””
My chest tightened.
“He asked whether you had married Vanessa.””
Mom covered her mouth.
“He knew,” I whispered.
Daniel nodded.
“What happened next?””
“He became agitated.””
“Why?””
“He said someone had given him something.””
“What?””
“A drink.””
I looked at the door.
Anthony was silent.
“Who brought him the drink?””
Daniel didn't answer.
Mom whispered the name.
“Vanessa.””
The room went still.
I shook my head.
“No.””
Daniel finally looked at me.
“She was there.””
I backed away.
“You let her in?””
“She was his daughter-in-law-to-be.””
“She wasn't my wife yet.””
“She said she was family.””
Mom's voice trembled.
“What happened after she arrived?””
Daniel looked at the floor.
“Your father stopped breathing again.””
I couldn't speak.
“Was it murder?””
“We never proved it.””
“Why?””
“Because the hospital record was altered.””
I remembered the toxicology report.
The missing file.
The forged documents.
Everything was beginning to form one terrible picture.
Then Anthony spoke again.
“David.””
I turned toward the door.
“Your father recorded the whole conversation.””
Daniel's head snapped up.
“What?””
Anthony laughed.
“You thought the flash drive contained everything?””
I looked down at it.
“What are you saying?””
“The recording is incomplete.””
“How?””
“Because someone removed the final file.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Did you?””
“No.””
Anthony said, “Vanessa did.””
Mom whispered, “Why would she remove it?””
“Because your father named her.””
I froze.
“Named her for what?””
“Everything.””
Anthony's voice hardened.
“The money. Westbridge. Bellrose. The property.””
He paused.
“And the death.””
My phone buzzed.
A message from an unknown number.
*OPEN FILE 7.*
I looked at the flash drive.
My hands shook as I plugged it into Ellen's computer.
There were six folders.
Bank records.
Emails.
Property.
Westbridge.
Bellrose.
And one folder marked *PRIVATE*.
I opened it.
Seven audio files appeared.
I clicked the seventh.
Static.
Then my father's voice.
Weak.
Breathing heavily.
“David…”
I stopped breathing.
Mom began crying.
My father's voice continued.
“If you're hearing this, I wasn't wrong.””
A second voice appeared.
Vanessa.
“You're confused.””
My father's voice became clearer.
“No. I know exactly what you've done.””
Vanessa said nothing.
Then Dad spoke again.
“You took the money.””
“I borrowed it.””
“You forged the transfer.””
“I had no choice.””
“You always have a choice.””
A chair scraped.
Vanessa's voice became sharper.
“You think you can destroy me?””
“No.””
Dad coughed.
“You destroyed yourself.””
Then another voice entered.
Anthony.
“Enough.””
I stared at the screen.
Anthony said, “You should have signed the documents.””
Dad replied, “I won't.””
Anthony's voice hardened.
“Then your son will suffer.””
Dad said nothing.
Then Vanessa whispered,
“Give me the trust, and he'll never know.””
Mom covered her mouth.
The recording continued.
Dad asked, “How much have you stolen?””
Vanessa answered.
“Enough.””
“Enough for what?””
“To disappear.””
The recording suddenly cut to static.
I stared at the screen.
“That isn't the end.””
Anthony spoke from outside.
“No.””
I turned toward the door.
“Then where is the rest?””
“You already have it.””
I looked at Daniel.
He looked terrified.
“What?””
Anthony said, “Ask your mother about the blue cardigan.””
I looked at Mom.
She went pale.
“The cardigan?””
Anthony laughed.
“Your father hid the final evidence inside something Vanessa would never think to search.””
Mom slowly reached for the blue cardigan she'd worn to the hospital the previous day.
Her fingers trembled.
“David…”
“What?””
She looked at the cardigan.
“The pocket.””
I stared.
“You had something in the pocket?””
“I thought it was a handkerchief.””
She reached inside.
Her fingers found something.
She pulled it out.
A tiny black memory card.
Daniel stared at it.
“That's impossible.””
Mom looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because your father told me he'd destroyed it.””
I took the card.
“What is on it?””
Daniel's voice barely came out.
“The final recording.””
Before I could insert it, the bank door exploded inward.
Glass shattered.
Mom screamed.
Two men rushed into the room.
Daniel tackled the first.
I pulled Mom behind the desk.
The second man grabbed my jacket.
We crashed into a chair.
I hit the floor.
The memory card flew from my hand.
It slid beneath the desk.
The man reached for me.
Then another voice shouted.
“Stop!””
Vanessa stood in the doorway.
Her hair was soaked from the rain.
Her face was streaked with tears.
She looked at me.
Then at the men.
“Don't touch my husband.””
One of them stepped toward her.
“You were told to stay away.””
Vanessa backed up.
“I changed my mind.””
Anthony's voice came from the hallway.
“Too late.””
Vanessa looked toward the corridor.
Her face changed.
“David,” she whispered.
I looked at her.
“What?””
She pointed behind me.
Anthony was standing at the end of the hallway.
He was holding a gun.
And beside him stood a police officer.
The officer raised his weapon.
“David Carter,” he said.
“Step away from the desk.””
I froze.
Vanessa stared at me.
Then she whispered the words that shattered everything.
May you like
“David…”
“That officer works for Anthony.””
