Chapter 7 - THE BROKEN BLOODLINE

My hands shook so badly I nearly drove off the road. The phone pressed hard against my ear. Beside me, Lily had curled into a small, trembling ball in the passenger seat, clutching her rabbit and staring at me with eyes still wide with terror.
"Uncle Thomas?" I whispered. "But he died. Three years ago. The car crash—"
"It was faked," Sarah said, her voice grave and steady. "Your father suspected it even before he died. He told me Thomas had been siphoning money out of Reed Holdings for years. Setting up shell companies. Moving shipments off the books. When your father found the proof, Thomas vanished. Staged the accident. Everyone thought he was dead."
"And Daniel..." The pieces fell into place, sharp and jagged. "Daniel knew. All along."
"Thomas is his father. What do you think he would do for him?"
Everything replayed in my mind—the lies, the fear, the way Daniel had hesitated when he touched my hands on the pier. The way he had whispered run. He had been torn in two directions. Bound by blood to the man who had destroyed us, but bound by love—however broken—to the family he had built with me.
"Why?" I said, my voice cracking. "Why drag us through all this? Why not just ask? Why kill my father?"
"Because your father wouldn't let him steal the company. Because he threatened to expose everything. And because Thomas knew Daniel could never take what he wanted from you—unless he destroyed you first." Sarah paused. "Emily, the documents you gave Daniel tonight—they were copies, right?"
"Yes. The originals are safe."
"Good. And the letter?"
"Inside. Telling them everything goes public if they touch us."
Sarah breathed out. "Then Thomas won't come after you openly. He can't afford a war. Not yet. But he will come. Through Daniel. Through anyone he can reach. You need to disappear. Tonight."
"I can't leave—"
"You can't stay. Thomas knows where you live. He knows your habits. He knows Lily's school. He has been planning this for three years. You need to go somewhere he cannot find you until we can build a case strong enough to put him away for life."
I looked at Lily. She was watching me, silent and brave, tears drying on her cheeks.
"Where?"
"Elena is waiting at a safe house outside the city. Fully secured. No paper trail. Pack nothing. Come straight here. And Emily—trust no one. Not the police. Not your friends. Not anyone who knew your father or Daniel. Thomas has eyes everywhere."
We hung up. I changed direction, merging onto the highway toward the safe house address Sarah had texted. My mind was a storm of anger and grief.
Daniel had never been the mastermind. He had been a pawn, just like me. Used by his own father to destroy the family he had married into. Every lie, every betrayal, every moment of humiliation—it had all been orchestrated by the man who had sat at our dinner table every Thanksgiving. Who had bounced Lily on his knee. Who had called me niece with a smile while planning our ruin.
And Daniel... he had stood beside his father all this time. He had let Madison into our home. He had let Lily be threatened. He had let me be slapped and humiliated. And only at the very end—when he stood face to face with us on that pier—had his conscience finally broken through.
Why save us then? Why not let his father have what he wanted?
Because somewhere beneath the fear and the obedience, he still loved us.
That realization hurt more than all the rest.
Lily sat up slowly. "Mommy?"
I reached over and squeezed her hand. "I'm here, baby."
"That man... the one in the mask..." She hesitated, searching for words. "His voice sounded like Daddy."
My heart clenched. "Did it?"
"Yes. And when he pushed me toward you... he whispered something. Before I ran."
My grip tightened. "What did he say?"
Lily looked at me, solemn and heartbreakingly sure. "He said 'Tell Mommy I'm sorry. And that I love her.' And then he pushed me harder so I could run faster."
Tears spilled over before I could stop them. I wiped them away quickly, staring at the dark road ahead.
Daniel had been fighting a war on two fronts. Against his father, and against his own conscience. And tonight, on that pier, he had finally chosen us. Even if it meant betraying the only parent he had.
"Mommy?" Lily tugged at my sleeve. "Is Daddy in trouble?"
"Yes, sweetheart," I said softly. "Very big trouble."
"Will he be okay?"
"I don't know." I looked at her. "But he loves you. Very much. And he risked everything to bring you back to me."
Lily fell quiet again. We drove in silence for mile after mile. Behind us, the city receded. Ahead, only darkness and the faint promise of safety.
But I knew—safety was an illusion. Thomas would not stop. He had been building to this for years. He would pressure Daniel. He would hunt us down. He would not rest until he held every document, every secret, every last trace of power.
And Daniel—caught between father and family—would be forced to choose again.
When we arrived at the safe house, Elena was waiting. A modest cottage surrounded by trees, miles from any main road. Lights on inside. No neighbors in sight.
She opened the door and stepped aside. "Come in. Quickly."
Inside, Sarah stood by the fireplace. She turned when we entered, her face grave. She walked straight to me and placed a hand on my shoulder.
"Emily... something happened after you left the pier."
My blood ran cold. "Daniel?"
Sarah nodded slowly. "Thomas found out he let you go. He found out about the letter."
"And?"
"Daniel is missing. Again. But this time... he left something behind." Sarah held out her phone. A single photograph filled the screen—scrawled handwriting on a scrap of paper.
It read:
*HE IS GOING TO BURN EVERYTHING DOWN. THE WAREHOUSE. THE RECORDS. ANYONE WHO KNOWS THE TRUTH. INCLUDING ME. TELL EMILY I LOVE HER. TELL HER TO DIG UP THE FOUNDATION.*
I stared at the words. Dig up the foundation.
Sarah watched me closely. "Your father built Reed Holdings from the ground up. The original headquarters—where he first opened his doors—was a small building on the edge of town. Demolished ten years ago. A new foundation was poured for the warehouse Thomas faked the paperwork to build."
My breath caught. "Where Daniel's car was found."
"Where Madison led you. Where everything began." Sarah lowered her voice. "Your father buried something beneath that foundation. Something he knew Thomas would never dare touch. Something he hoped you would find one day."
I looked at Lily, who sat quietly on the sofa, watching us. Then I looked back at Sarah.
"Thomas is going to destroy the warehouse," I said. "Tonight."
"Before sunrise," Elena confirmed. "We have hours. Maybe less."
I touched the key around my neck. Cold. Heavy. Waiting.
"Then we go back," I said. "Tonight. Before he destroys the only proof we have."

"Emily—it's a trap," Sarah warned. "Daniel knew it. That's why he wrote the note. Thomas will be waiting."
"Let him wait." I stood tall. "My father died for this truth. Daniel risked his life to warn me. I am not running anymore. I am finishing what they started."
