Chapter 17 - THE FINAL CONFRONTATION

Months passed. Seasons changed. Life settled into a gentle, steady rhythm.

I ran Reed Holdings, guided by my father's principles and Daniel's sharp insight. We expanded responsibly. We created jobs. We helped the community. We restored the company to honor.

Daniel had reconnected fully with his mother. They saw each other every weekend. He learned who he was—where he came from, what his real father had been like, what kind of man he was meant to be. He grew more confident with every passing day. More sure of himself. More at peace.

Lily blossomed. She had a grandmother who adored her. A father who played with her fearlessly. A mother who taught her to be brave. She was safe. She was loved. She was happy.

But the past does not always stay buried.

One afternoon, a man arrived at the office. He asked to see me. Refused to give his name. Said it concerned "unfinished business from the warehouse."

I met him in the conference room. He was older, weathered, his eyes hard and knowing.

"Mrs. Reed," he said. "I worked for Thomas. Until the very end."

My blood ran cold. "What do you want?"

"Thomas had a partner," he said, lowering his voice. "Someone even he was afraid of. Someone who financed everything. Someone who knew everything."

I leaned forward. "Who?"

"I don't know his real name. Only the initials—R.K. He told Thomas to make sure nothing was left behind. No loose ends. No evidence. When Thomas failed... R.K. was furious."

The man slid a folder across the table. "He is still watching. He still wants what Thomas failed to get. And he knows you have it."

I opened the folder. Photographs. Surveillance shots. Of me. Of Lily. Of Daniel. Taken outside our home. Outside the office. Outside Lily's school.

My heart hammered. "How long?"

"Since the warehouse. He knows Thomas is dead. He knows you have the evidence. He is waiting for you to let your guard down."

May you like

"And you are telling me this... why?"

"Because R.K. is not like Thomas. Thomas had limits. This man... he has none. He will kill you. He will kill your daughter. He will kill anyone who stands in his way." The man stood up. "I am telling you because I have a daughter too.
