Chapter 15 - WHAT WE ALMOST LOST

We returned to the lake house as the sun dipped below the horizon. Lily ran out to meet us the moment she heard the car, her face bright with excitement. Daniel caught her up in his arms and held her so tightly she laughed and squirmed.
"You found her?" Lily asked, pulling back to look at his face. "Your real mom?"
"I found her," Daniel said, his voice thick with emotion. "And she cannot wait to meet you."
Lily beamed. "Will she be my grandma too?"
Daniel smiled—a wide, brilliant smile that transformed his face. "She will be whatever you want her to be, my love."
That night, I sat on the porch watching them play in the twilight. Daniel chased Lily across the grass, both of them laughing freely. No shadows. No fear. Only joy.
I thought about everything we had lost. My father. Our home. The years of peace Thomas had stolen. But I also thought about what we had gained. Truth. Freedom. Daniel, finally whole. Lily, safe and loved. A new family waiting to welcome us.
Sometimes, the things we almost lose are the very things that teach us how precious life truly is.
My phone buzzed. Sarah.
"Emily," she said, her voice sounding unusually warm. "The final reports came in today. Every last one of Thomas's associates has been prosecuted. Every account frozen. Every illegal shipment intercepted. There is nothing left. He is gone. Truly gone."
Relief washed through me. "It's really over."
"It's over. And Emily... Reed Holdings is stronger than it has ever been. You built that. From the ashes."
"Not alone," I said, glancing toward Daniel and Lily. "I had help."
Sarah paused. "How is Daniel?"
"He is free, Sarah. For the first time in his life, he is truly free."
"Good. He deserves that. More than anyone." She paused again. "And you? What will you do now?"
I watched Daniel scoop Lily up and spin her around. I watched my daughter shriek with laughter. I watched the man I loved finally smile without fear.
"I will build a home," I said softly. "A place where we are safe. Where we are loved. Where no one will ever hurt us again."
May you like
"And then?"
"And then... we will live."
