Chapter 6: The Basement Beneath the Ashes
I read the message three times.
Not because I didn't understand the words.
Because I did.
*Come alone, Rachel.*
*Your husband can't save you this time.*
The screen glowed in my hand.
A photograph of my father.
Alive.
Standing in a basement that shouldn't exist.
A place that everyone had spent twenty-two years pretending was gone.
“Rachel.””
Daniel's voice pulled me back.
I looked at him.
For the first time that night, I saw something I hadn't expected.
Fear.
Not the fear of being caught.
Not the fear of losing his money.
The fear of losing me.
“Don't go,” he said.
I laughed quietly.
“You don't get to say that.””
“I know.””
“You lied to me.””
“I know.””
“You cheated on me.””
“I know.””
“You helped them hide things from me.””
His face tightened.
“I know.””
“Then why should I listen to you?””
He looked down.
“Because for once, I'm telling you the truth.””
I stared at him.
“That would be new.””
The words hurt him.
Good.
They should have.
But before he could answer, Eric stepped between us.
“You're not going anywhere alone.””
I looked at him.
“The message said alone.””
“The person who sent it wants you isolated.””
“That doesn't mean I should ignore it.””
“It means it's a trap.””
I looked at the photograph again.
“My father is alive.””
Eric's expression softened.
“I know.””
“No, you don't.””
He was silent.
I pointed at the image.
“You spent four months investigating this. You searched for him. You looked through records. You followed my husband's family.””
“Yes.””
“And you never found him.””
“No.””
“Now I have proof.””
“I know.””
“Then I'm going.””
Eric shook his head.
“Rachel.””
I turned toward him.
“Would you stay away if it was your father?””
He didn't answer.
That was enough.
Daniel stepped closer.
“I'll go.””
I looked at him.
“No.””
“I know where they're likely watching.””
“You mean you know because you were part of it.””
His expression fell.
“I mean I know because I've spent months trying to understand what my father did.””
“Your father.””
I looked toward Robert.
He had been unusually quiet.
Too quiet.
“Ask him.””
Daniel frowned.
“What?””
“Ask him what happened that night.””
Robert's face changed.
Just slightly.
But I saw it.
“Rachel.””
“No.””
I stepped toward him.
“You knew my father.””
Robert stared at me.
“I knew him.””
“You were there when he disappeared.””
“That was twenty-two years ago.””
“Were you?””
Silence.
Daniel looked at his father.
“Dad?””
Robert looked away.
And that was the answer.
Daniel's voice became colder.
“Were you there?””
Robert exhaled.
“Yes.””
The terminal seemed to tilt again.
Daniel stepped back.
“You told me you didn't know.””
“I told you I wasn't responsible.””
“That wasn't my question.””
Robert looked at his son.
“You don't understand.””
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
“I really don't.””
I watched the two of them.
The betrayal between them was almost as deep as mine.
Almost.
“What happened?”” I asked.
Robert didn't answer.
“Tell me.””
He looked older suddenly.
Not guilty.
Not innocent.
Just tired.
“Your father found something he wasn't supposed to find.””
“What?””
“The ledger.””
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
Robert's eyes narrowed.
“Because that's what matters.””
“What is in it?””
“Proof.””
“Of what?””
His silence was enough.
I stepped closer.
“Of what?””
Robert finally whispered,
“That the Bennett family built everything on money that wasn't theirs.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
I looked at him.
“You knew.””
“No.””
“You suspected.””
“Yes.””
“And you still married me.””
His face twisted.
“Rachel, I didn't know when I met you.””
My father's letter came back to my mind.
*Ask him where he was before you were introduced.*
I looked at Daniel.
“Where were you before we met?””
He froze.
The question landed harder than I expected.
“Rachel…”
“Answer.””
He looked at Robert.
Then away.
“I was working at Mercy General.””
“That wasn't my question.””
He swallowed.
“I was there the night your father disappeared.””
Everything went still.
My voice became a whisper.
“What?””
Daniel looked at me.
“I was a medical intern.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
“No.””
I stepped backward.
“You were there.””
“Yes.””
“And you never told me?””
“I didn't know it was him.””
My breathing became uneven.
“What do you mean?””
Daniel ran a hand through his hair.
“There was an unidentified man brought into the emergency room.””
My heart pounded.
“An accident?””
“Yes.””
“What happened?””
“He had severe injuries. He couldn't tell us his name.””
“And?””
“I treated him.””
I stared at him.
“You treated my father.””
Daniel nodded.
“I didn't know who he was.””
“Then how did you find out?””
“Years later.””
“How?””
“My father mentioned the incident.””
Robert's face went pale.
Daniel looked at him.
“You knew.””
Robert said nothing.
“You knew that patient was him.””
“I suspected.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“You suspected.””
I felt sick.
All these years.
The man I married had touched the missing piece of my life without knowing.
Then found out.
And stayed silent.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
Daniel's eyes filled.
“Because when I discovered the truth, you were pregnant.””
I froze.
“What?””
“When I found out, we were expecting Emily.””
I stared at him.
That made no sense.
Emily was Daniel's daughter from his first marriage.
Not mine.
Then I remembered.
The timeline.
The first marriage.
The divorce.
The way he had always avoided talking about it.
“What are you saying?””
Daniel looked at me.
“I was investigating your father's disappearance before I ever met you.””
My head spun.
“What?””
He swallowed.
“My first wife worked for Bennett Family Holdings.””
Everyone went silent.
“Megan wasn't the first person I got close to because of this.””
I stared at him.
“Your first wife?””
“She found records. Similar to Megan.””
“Then what happened?””
His expression darkened.
“She died.””
The airport noise faded again.
“How?””
He looked at Robert.
Robert closed his eyes.
“Car accident.””
I stared at him.
“Another accident.””
Nobody answered.
Daniel continued.
“After she died, I found documents she had hidden. They led me to your father.””
I shook my head.
“You married me because of the investigation.””
“No.””
“But it started that way.””
He looked devastated.
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt more than another lie.
“I was trying to find the truth.””
“And then?””
“And then I fell in love with you.””
I looked away.
I wanted to believe him.
That was the worst part.
Even after everything.
A part of me still recognized the man I had loved.
That part hated itself.
Eric interrupted.
“We need to decide what happens next.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“We have limited time.””
“Why?””
He showed me his phone.
A news alert was open.
*Local police investigating suspicious activity near abandoned commercial property in Milwaukee.*
My blood ran cold.
“They know.””
Eric nodded.
“Someone wants you there.””
“And someone wants to stop us.””
“Yes.””
Daniel looked at me.
“We go together.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Rachel.””
“If my father wanted me alone, there's a reason.””
“He doesn't know what they know.””
“My father knows more than all of us.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Please.””
I looked at him.
That word.
The same word he had used at the airport.
But now it sounded different.
Not manipulative.
Desperate.
I hated that.
I hated that after everything, I still cared.
“We go,” I said.
Daniel exhaled.
Eric nodded.
Robert immediately said,
“No.””
Everyone looked at him.
He continued,
“If she goes there, she dies.””
I stared at him.
“How do you know?””
His face changed.
Too late.
He realized he had revealed something.
Daniel stepped toward him.
“Dad.””
Robert said nothing.
“Dad.””
The second time was different.
A warning.
A threat.
“Who is waiting there?””
Robert looked at me.
Then at Daniel.
Then finally said:
“The same person who killed your mother.””
My blood ran cold.
“Who?””
Robert's voice dropped.
“Someone you know.””
“Who?””
He looked directly at Daniel.
And said:
“Your husband’s first wife.””
Daniel went completely still.
“That’s impossible.””
Robert shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“That’s why you were never supposed to find out.””
My phone buzzed.
Another message.
This time from the same unknown number.
*He finally told you about Sarah.*
May you like
A second message appeared.
*Now ask Daniel why he let her die.*
