Chapter 3: The Trust
I stared at Claire.
“What trust?””
Her lips parted, but no sound came out.
Robert stepped toward her.
“Enough.””
I turned to him.
“No.””
The word came out so quietly that everyone heard it.
“No more ‘enough.’ No more telling me where the line is. You crossed it twelve years ago.””
Daniel moved closer.
“Rachel, let's go somewhere private.””
I laughed.
“You've been private long enough.””
Eric Lawson remained beside me, his gray folder still open in his hands.
He looked at Daniel.
“You should have told her before this.””
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“This has nothing to do with you.””
“It became my business when you attempted to transfer marital assets without full disclosure.””
I looked at Eric.
“Tell me everything.””
Daniel immediately cut in.
“Don't.””
I turned toward him.
“Do not tell me what to do.””
He stopped.
For the first time since I had known him, Daniel looked like a stranger wearing my husband's face.
Eric nodded toward the terminal seating area.
“Let's sit down.””
I didn't move.
“Right here.””
He gave me a long look, then opened the folder.
“There is a trust established by the Bennett family in 2008.””
“That's before I met Daniel.””
“Yes.””
“What does it have to do with me?””
Eric glanced at Daniel.
“Technically, that depends on what happens next.””
My heart began beating harder.
“What does that mean?””
Eric removed several pages.
“Your husband's family owns multiple properties and businesses through a network of holding companies. Daniel became a beneficiary of one of those entities after your marriage.””
I frowned.
“After?””
“Three months after your wedding.””
I looked at Daniel.
“You never told me.””
“I didn't think it mattered.””
Eric's expression hardened.
“It matters because the trust contains a provision concerning spouses.””
I waited.
“What provision?””
Eric hesitated.
“Any spouse who contributes materially to the preservation or increase in value of trust assets can acquire a claim against certain distributions.””
I blinked.
“Contributes how?””
“Income, labor, debt repayment, property maintenance, business assistance. There are several categories.””
My mouth went dry.
I suddenly saw twelve years of my life differently.
The evenings I'd spent doing accounting for Daniel's private practice.
The medical bills I had paid when his clinic struggled.
The mortgage payments.
The renovations.
The years I had delayed my own career because Daniel's schedule was unpredictable.
The countless weekends I had spent handling paperwork for his family businesses while he told me I was “helping out.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Did you know about this?””
He looked down.
“Some of it.””
“Some?””
Robert stepped forward.
“Rachel, it isn't what you think.””
I turned on him.
“You knew too?””
He didn't answer.
I felt heat rise behind my eyes.
“How many people knew?””
Claire started crying.
“Rachel, I didn't want this.””
“You didn't want what?””
She wiped her cheek.
“I didn't want you to get hurt.””
I stared at her.
“You watched me get hurt.””
She looked away.
That was worse than an admission.
Eric closed the folder.
“There's another issue.””
“What?””
“The house.””
My stomach tightened.
“What about it?””
“The property was transferred to Bennett Family Holdings eight days before the sale.””
I looked at Daniel.
“You transferred our house to your father's company before it was sold.””
“It was a restructuring.””
“You made it look like you sold it.””
“I sold it.””
“To a company your family owns.””
“It was temporary.””
“Temporary?””
He rubbed both hands over his face.
“The house needed to be moved.””
“Why?””
Silence.
I looked at Eric.
“Why?””
He turned one page.
“Because if the trust administrator determines that the property was acquired using trust-related funds and subsequently converted for personal benefit, the transaction may be challenged.””
I stared at Daniel.
“So you moved the house because you were afraid I'd have a claim.””
“No.””
Eric raised an eyebrow.
Daniel corrected himself.
“Not exactly.””
“Then exactly what?””
Daniel lowered his voice.
“I was trying to protect you.””
I actually laughed.
“You sold my home to protect me?””
“I was trying to keep you out of this.””
“Out of what?””
He looked at his father.
Robert's face was stone.
Daniel finally said, “The trust is being dissolved.””
I felt the words settle over me.
“When?””
“Soon.””
“How soon?””
“Thirty days.””
Eric shook his head.
“Twenty-six.””
Daniel glared at him.
“Thank you.””
I looked between them.
“What happens in twenty-six days?””
Eric answered.
“The assets are distributed.””
“To who?””
“Beneficiaries.””
“Daniel?””
“Among others.””
“Me?””
Eric paused.
“That's what they're trying to prevent.””
My chest tightened.
“Who is ‘they’?””
No one answered.
I looked at Robert.
“Your family.””
He remained silent.
I looked at Daniel.
“You.””
His silence was answer enough.
I stepped backward.
The airport suddenly felt unbearably bright.
I stared at the folder in my hands.
Every page seemed to carry another piece of the life I thought I had built with my husband.
“What does Megan have to do with this?””
Daniel's expression changed.
“Nothing.””
Eric looked at him.
“That's not accurate.””
Daniel turned.
“What did you tell her?””
Eric ignored him.
“She was not simply a romantic partner.””
Megan lifted her head.
“Wait.””
She looked confused.
I turned to her.
“What did he promise you?””
She swallowed.
“He said we'd leave Chicago.””
“When?””
“After the divorce.””
“Whose divorce?””
She hesitated.
“Yours.””
I nodded.
“And where were you going?””
“The condo.””
“The one Daniel said he bought?””
“Yes.””
“Who owns it?””
She looked at Daniel.
“I thought he did.””
Eric spoke.
“The condo is owned by Bennett Family Holdings.””
Megan's face collapsed.
“What?””
Daniel said, “Megan, I told you I'd take care of it.””
“You said it was ours.””
“It will be.””
“You lied.””
His voice hardened.
“Lower your voice.””
She stared at him.
“No.””
The woman who had looked so confident at Gate 42 was now trembling.
“You told me your marriage was over.””
“It was.””
“No, it wasn't.””
“I was handling it.””
“You were handling me.””
Daniel stepped toward her.
She backed away.
I watched them and felt something unexpected.
Not jealousy.
Not even anger.
Pity.
She had been lied to too.
Just differently.
I looked at Eric.
“Why are you helping me?””
He was quiet.
Then he took out another photograph.
He handed it to me.
The same unknown woman from the message.
This time, I recognized the setting.
The restaurant was one Daniel and I had visited on our anniversary two years ago.
The woman sat across from him.
Robert was beside her.
Claire was there too.
And on the table was a thick document.
I stared at the picture.
“When was this taken?””
“Four months ago.””
I looked at Daniel.
“You were planning this that long?””
“I was trying to find a way out.””
“A way out of me?””
“A way out of the trust.””
I shook my head.
“You could have told me.””
“I knew what you would do.””
“What would I do?””
“You'd want half.””
I froze.
“That was what this was about?””
He didn't answer.
My voice became almost a whisper.
“You were afraid I'd want what belonged to both of us.””
“No.””
“You were afraid I'd ask what I was entitled to.””
“Rachel—”
“You weren't protecting me.””
I looked down at the folder.
“You were protecting your money.””
Daniel's eyes filled with anger.
“You don't understand what that family does to people.””
I stared at him.
“What family?””
“My father.””
Robert stepped forward.
“Daniel.””
“No, Dad. I'm done covering for you.””
Robert's face hardened.
“You have no idea what you're saying.””
Daniel turned to me.
“They want to control everything.””
“Then why did you go along with them?””
“Because I was afraid.””
That stopped me.
He had finally said something honest.
At least one thing.
“Afraid of what?””
Daniel looked toward the departure gate.
“Of losing everything.””
I stared at him.
“You mean the money.””
“No.””
“The house.””
“No.””
“Your family.””
He didn't answer.
Then he whispered,
“They know what happened to your father.””
My breath caught.
I stopped moving.
“What did you just say?””
Daniel looked at me.
His face had changed.
The fear was back.
Eric lowered his folder.
Robert whispered, “Daniel, don't.””
But Daniel was staring only at me.
“You think this started with the affair,” he said.
I felt the floor disappear beneath me.
“It didn't.””
I could barely breathe.
“What happened to my father?””
He opened his mouth.
Then the overhead speaker crackled.
“Final boarding call for Flight 1847 to Cancún.””
Robert grabbed Daniel's arm.
“Not here.””
Daniel pulled free.
He looked at me one last time.
Then he said the sentence that destroyed whatever remained of my certainty about the past twelve years.
“Your father didn't abandon your family, Rachel.””
He swallowed.
“My father made sure he disappeared.””
The terminal seemed to tilt.
I stared at Daniel.
At Robert.
At Claire.
At Eric.
Nobody spoke.
Then, from somewhere behind me, a woman's voice whispered my name.
I turned.
May you like
The woman from the photograph was standing only a few feet away.
And in her hand was an old photograph of my father.
