Chapter 9: The Choice Between Two Families

The phone remained silent after Margaret’s words.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

It felt like the entire house was waiting.

Waiting for me to confess.

Waiting for Alex to turn against me.

Waiting for the truth to finally destroy what remained of our family.

But I had spent my entire life surviving storms.

And I knew something important.

The truth hurts.

But lies hurt longer.

“Margaret,” I said.

My voice surprised me.

It was calm.

“Tell him.””

Alex looked at me.

“Mom?””

I looked at my son.

“I’m tired of everyone using pieces of the truth against each other.””

Daniel’s expression tightened.

Harper looked uncertain.

For the first time, she looked like she didn’t know what came next.

Margaret spoke through the phone.

“Evelyn…”

“No.””

I interrupted.

“You wanted him to know.””

A pause.

“Then let him know everything.””

Alex stared at me.

I sat down.

Because my legs suddenly felt weak.

“The night of the accident,” I began, “I was not there.””

Alex frowned.

“But Daniel said—”

“Daniel says many things.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You’re avoiding the truth.””

“No.””

I looked at him.

“I’m finally telling it.””

I turned back to Alex.

“I arrived after the crash.””

His face changed.

“What?””

“The police called me.””

“Then why did Daniel say you were involved?””

“Because he’s lying.””

Daniel laughed.

“Convenient.””

I ignored him.

“When I arrived, your father was already in the ambulance.””

Alex listened.

“Margaret was there too.””

The phone went silent.

“She was injured.””

Alex looked confused.

“But she said she left before?””

“She left afterward.””

“Why?””

I looked at the phone.

“Because she knew what she had done.””

Margaret spoke.

“Evelyn.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t get to rewrite this.””

Alex looked between us.

“What did she do?””

I closed my eyes.

Then answered.

“She took the documents.””

The room went still.

“What documents?””

“The ones Thomas was trying to protect.””

Daniel’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

“You knew.””

I looked at him.

“You were looking for those documents all these years.””

Daniel said nothing.

Margaret’s voice came through.

“He’s right about one thing.””

Everyone turned toward the phone.

“Thomas lied.””

My heart hurt.

“But not about the accident.””

Alex whispered:

“Then what did he lie about?””

Margaret answered.

“Why he kept everything secret.””

I looked at my son.

“Your father believed he was protecting you.””

“From what?””

Margaret hesitated.

“From me.””

Alex closed his eyes.

“Why?””

Because she was finally going to say it.

The thing that had shaped all of our lives.

“Because I made mistakes.””

The admission sounded small.

Almost fragile.

“I was desperate. I made financial decisions I shouldn’t have. I borrowed money. I hid things.””

Alex listened.

“But Thomas found out.””

“Yes.””

“And Dad threatened you?””

“No.””

Margaret’s voice cracked.

“He tried to help me.””

That surprised everyone.

Even me.

“He wanted to fix everything.””

“Then what happened?””

A long pause.

“Daniel happened.””

All eyes moved toward him.

Daniel’s face darkened.

“Don’t.””

Margaret continued.

“My brother found out about the money problems.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Stop talking.””

“No.””

Her voice became stronger.

“You blackmailed Thomas.””

Alex stared.

“What?””

Daniel laughed.

“She’s lying.””

But nobody believed him anymore.

Margaret continued.

“You threatened to expose him.””

“Expose what?””

Alex asked.

Margaret answered:

“Something Thomas did when he was younger.””

I looked at Daniel.

“What?””

Margaret hesitated.

“He made a mistake.””

Daniel smiled coldly.

“A mistake?””

The room became tense.

“You all want heroes and villains.””

He looked at Alex.

“But the truth is uglier.””

Alex stepped forward.

“Tell me.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Your father ruined someone’s life.””

“Who?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Your mother knows.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

He pointed at me.

“She knows.””

Alex turned.

“Mom?””

I felt exhausted.

Because every secret had another secret beneath it.

“I know about one thing.””

“What?””

I looked at Daniel.

“Thomas made a mistake when he was young.””

Alex waited.

“What mistake?””

I swallowed.

“He caused an accident.””

The words were barely audible.

“He thought someone died.””

Alex stared.

“And?””

“But they didn’t.””

Daniel’s smile disappeared.

“Your father spent his life trying to cover it up.””

The phone went silent.

Harper looked overwhelmed.

“I didn’t know.””

Nobody answered her.

Because suddenly the Christmas fight felt so small.

The money.

The property.

The invitations.

None of it mattered.

This was about a lifetime of choices.

Alex looked at me.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

I looked at my son.

“Because I didn’t know how.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“No.””

My voice broke.

“It isn’t.””

I stepped closer.

“I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“Of you losing your father.””

Alex looked away.

“You keep protecting dead people.””

The sentence cut deeply.

Because it was true.

“I know.””

A tear fell.

“I should have protected you.””

The room went quiet.

Then Alex’s phone buzzed.

A message.

From Margaret.

He opened it.

His face changed.

“What?””

He handed me the phone.

It was a photograph.

An old photograph.

A photograph taken the night of the accident.

In the background was the damaged car.

The road.

The snow.

And a person standing near the vehicle.

A person everyone thought had never been there.

I stared at the image.

Because I knew that face.

I had seen it once.

Years ago.

Before Thomas.

Before Alex.

Before everything.

Alex whispered:

“Mom…”

“Who is that?””

My hands shook.

Because the person in the photograph was the one person I never expected.

Someone who had been part of my life long before Thomas.

Someone who knew my secrets too.

I looked at my son.

May you like

And said the name.

“Your grandfather.””
