Chapter 8: The Price Of The Truth

The document in Harper’s hand was small.

Almost meaningless.

A single piece of paper.

But I had learned something about secrets.

They rarely needed many words.

Just the right ones.

“What is that?”” Alex asked.

Harper looked at him.

“The agreement.””

“Between who?””

She glanced at Daniel.

“Between your father and Daniel.””

Alex’s face tightened.

“You knew about this?””

“I found it.””

“That wasn’t my question.””

Harper looked uncomfortable for the first time.

“Yes.””

The answer landed heavily.

Alex stared at his wife.

“How long?””

“Since before Christmas.””

My son laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because he couldn’t believe it.

“So the entire time…”

Harper said nothing.

“You knew something was happening.””

“Yes.””

“And you let me think my mother was the problem.””

“I needed answers.””

“No.””

Alex shook his head.

“You needed a weapon.””

Harper’s expression hardened.

“You don’t understand.””

“No. I think I finally do.””

The words hurt her.

I saw it.

But I also saw something else.

She wasn’t ashamed.

She was frustrated.

Because her plan was falling apart.

Daniel stepped forward.

“This family has wasted enough time.””

I turned toward him.

“You were there that night.””

He smiled slightly.

“Yes.””

Alex looked at him.

“You caused the accident?””

“No.””

The answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

“I was trying to stop something worse.””

“Like what?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Your father was planning to expose Margaret.””

I frowned.

“Expose her?””

“Yes.””

Harper crossed her arms.

“She stole money.””

Daniel nodded.

“From multiple accounts.””

Alex looked confused.

“Then why did Dad hide everything?””

“Because your father was not as innocent as you think.””

The words felt like another wound.

I stepped forward.

“Be careful.””

Daniel looked at me.

“You spent thirty years worshiping a man who built his life on secrets.””

I hated that a part of me wondered if he was right.

Not because I believed him.

Because I was exhausted from discovering new pieces of a puzzle I never knew existed.

“What happened that night?”” I asked.

Daniel looked at Alex.

“Your father found out Margaret was planning to sell the property.””

“I know.””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You don’t.””

He walked closer.

“She wasn’t selling it for money.””

Alex frowned.

“Then why?””

“Because she was trying to leave.””

“That doesn’t make sense.””

Daniel looked at him.

“She was trying to escape.””

From what?

The question sat in the room.

Then Daniel answered.

“From your father.””

I felt the air disappear.

“No.””

Daniel looked at me.

“You don’t know him the way you think you did.””

I hated those words.

Because they sounded exactly like something Harper would say.

“You expect me to believe you?””

“No.””

Daniel smiled.

“But I expect Alex to.””

Alex looked at the papers.

The evidence.

The years of silence.

The impossible truth.

“Why now?”” he asked.

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Because your father left something behind.””

“What?””

“A confession.””

My heart stopped.

“What confession?””

Daniel looked at Harper.

She handed him another envelope.

“I found this in the house.””

Alex stared.

“You’ve been searching the property?””

“Yes.””

“For what?””

Daniel answered.

“For the one thing your father never wanted anyone to see.””

I looked at the envelope.

Then at Daniel.

“What is it?””

He smiled.

“The truth about the accident.””

Alex reached for it.

But Daniel pulled it away.

“Not yet.””

Alex’s eyes hardened.

“Give it to me.””

“You need to understand something first.””

“What?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Your father didn’t crash that car because of ice.””

The room went silent.

“He crashed because he was running from someone.””

Alex whispered:

“Who?””

Daniel looked at me.

Then said:

“Your mother.””

My body went completely still.

Alex turned toward me.

“No.””

Daniel continued.

“Thomas believed Evelyn was going to expose him.””

I felt like I had been punched.

“That’s a lie.””

“Is it?””

Daniel looked at Alex.

“Ask her what she found in the car.””

Alex turned.

“Mom?””

I opened my mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because there was something.

Something I had never told him.

Not because I wanted to hide it.

Because I thought it was irrelevant.

But now?

Now it felt like another brick in a wall built around my entire life.

“I found a key,” I whispered.

Alex stared.

“What?””

“After the accident.””

Daniel smiled.

“There it is.””

I looked at him.

“What are you doing?””

“Showing your son that everyone lied.””

I turned toward Alex.

“The key was in Thomas’s coat.””

“And?””

“I never knew what it opened.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Because your husband hid the door.””

My blood ran cold.

“The hidden room.””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

Alex looked at the room around us.

“So Dad built this?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Daniel answered quietly.

“To hide what he had done.””

The silence was unbearable.

Then Alex’s phone rang.

Everyone froze.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

“Who is it?”” I asked.

He answered.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice came through.

Margaret.

His eyes widened.

Then he put the phone on speaker.

Her voice filled the room.

“Alex, don’t listen to them.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Margaret.””

She continued.

“Your father was not the person they are making him out to be.””

Alex looked around.

“Then tell me the truth.””

A pause.

Then Margaret said:

“I will.””

Everyone waited.

Her next words changed everything.

“But first, you need to know what your mother did the night your father died.””

I looked at Alex.

May you like

And I knew.

The final secret had arrived.
