Chapter 6: The Truth Hidden in My Own Past

The room stopped breathing.

That was the only way I could describe it.

Everyone stood perfectly still.

Even the old grandfather clock in the corner seemed too loud as its hands moved through the silence.

I looked at Vanessa.

“What did you say?””

She wiped her tears.

“Lena wasn’t the only child whose records were changed.””

My fingers tightened around the notebook.

“Whose records?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

She looked at Grant.

Like she was asking him to say the words instead.

He didn’t.

So I did.

“Mine.””

The word came out before I even fully understood it.

Vanessa looked away.

And that was when I knew.

I had spent years believing I knew my own story.

My childhood.

My family.

My past.

But suddenly, I was standing in a room full of people who knew pieces of me that I didn’t.

And I hated that feeling.

I hated feeling like a stranger in my own life.

“What happened to me?”” I asked.

Vanessa’s voice was barely a whisper.

“When we became friends, I knew you had questions about your childhood.””

I stared at her.

“Everyone has questions.””

“Not like yours.””

My heart began racing.

“What does that mean?””

She looked at the notebook.

“I found something years ago.””

“What?””

“A file.””

Grant’s expression changed.

“What file?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“The file from the private investigator.””

The same investigator.

The same person whose name appeared in the documents.

I felt a chill.

“You hired someone to investigate me?””

She nodded slowly.

“Before Lena was born.””

The anger came instantly.

“You investigated me?””

“I needed to know who you were.””

“You were my friend.””

“I know.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You don’t know.””

My voice shook.

“You sat at my kitchen table. You met my family. You knew my dreams. You knew everything I was afraid of.””

Tears filled her eyes.

“And that’s why I chose you.””

The words made me freeze.

“Chose me?””

Vanessa nodded.

“I needed someone who would love Lena.””

I stared at her.

“You’re saying you planned this from the beginning?””

“No.””

Her answer was immediate.

“No, Naomi.””

She shook her head.

“I didn’t plan to hurt you.””

“But you did.””

“Yes.””

For once, she didn’t argue.

She accepted it.

And somehow that hurt more.

I looked down at the notebook again.

“Tell me about my records.””

Vanessa took a breath.

“When I hired the investigator, he found inconsistencies.””

“Inconsistencies?””

“Your birth records.””

My stomach tightened.

“That’s impossible.””

“Is it?””

I looked at Grant.

He was quiet.

Too quiet.

“You knew,” I whispered.

He looked at me.

“I suspected.””

“You suspected?””

I laughed once.

A broken sound.

“My attorney suspected something about my identity and didn’t tell me?””

“I didn’t have enough proof.””

“You didn’t have enough courage.””

His face fell.

Because he knew I was right.

Lena walked closer from the doorway.

“Mommy?””

I immediately turned.

I had forgotten she was there.

I hated that she had to hear this.

I knelt down.

“Sweetheart, you should not have to listen to this.””

“But I want to know.””

My heart broke.

“You’re a child.””

She shook her head.

“I’m not little anymore.””

That sentence hurt.

Because she was right.

Secrets had forced her to grow up too soon.

I held her hand.

“No matter what happens, you are my daughter.””

She nodded.

“Okay.””

But I saw the fear in her eyes.

The same fear I had seen when she thought I might leave.

I pulled her close.

“I’m not going anywhere.””

Across the room, Vanessa watched us.

And for a moment, she looked like she finally understood what she had almost destroyed.

Not a custody arrangement.

Not paperwork.

A family.

Grant picked up the investigator’s file.

“We need to see exactly what was found.””

Vanessa hesitated.

Then nodded.

“It’s in the drawer.””

Officer Blake opened the desk drawer.

Inside was a thick envelope.

Yellowed from time.

He handed it to Grant.

Grant opened it carefully.

The first page was a report.

Private Investigation Summary.

My name was written across the top.

I felt sick.

He read silently for a few seconds.

Then his expression changed.

“What?””

I reached for it.

Grant hesitated.

Then handed it over.

The first paragraph made no sense.

*Subject: Naomi Carter. Identity verification requested.*

I read the next lines.

*Investigation suggests subject’s childhood records may have been altered following a hospital incident.*

Hospital incident.

Those words again.

My hands began shaking.

I continued.

*Possible connection to infant transfer case occurring eighteen years ago.*

I looked up.

“Infant transfer?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa said:

“There was a mistake.””

I looked at her.

“A mistake?””

She nodded.

“Years ago. Before I met you.””

“What mistake?””

She swallowed.

“A hospital mix-up.””

The room became silent.

No.

That couldn’t be true.

Things like that didn’t happen.

Not to people.

Not in real life.

I looked at the report again.

“There was another baby.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

My voice dropped.

“What are you saying?””

She looked at me.

“I’m saying the records you grew up with may not belong to you.””

The floor felt like it moved beneath me.

My childhood memories came rushing back.

The old family photos.

My mother calling me by my name.

My father teaching me how to ride a bike.

Could all of it be wrong?

No.

No, that was impossible.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Who am I?””

The question sounded strange.

Like I was asking someone else.

Vanessa started crying.

“I don’t know.””

That answer terrified me.

“You don’t know?””

“The investigator couldn’t finish.””

“Why?””

Her eyes moved toward the file.

“Because someone stopped him.””

Grant looked up sharply.

“Who?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

The silence was enough.

Someone powerful.

Someone who had been protecting a secret.

Officer Blake stepped forward.

“Did you report this?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

“Why not?””

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

She looked at me.

“Of losing everything.””

I almost couldn’t believe it.

Again.

Everything came back to her fear.

Her fear.

Her choices.

Her secrets.

And everyone else paid the price.

Grant turned another page.

Then stopped.

His face changed.

“What?””

He didn’t answer.

“Grant.””

He looked at me.

“There’s a name.””

My heart started pounding.

“What name?””

He looked down.

“A woman connected to the hospital.””

“Who?””

Grant slowly turned the page.

The name was written clearly.

And the moment I saw it, my entire world changed.

Because I knew that name.

I had heard it my entire life.

My mother’s name.

But the document said something impossible.

*Patient transfer record: Birth mother requested contact.*

I stared.

“That’s my mother.””

Vanessa whispered:

“No.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She shook her head.

“That’s not your mother.””

My breathing stopped.

“She raised me.””

“Yes.””

“Then she’s my mother.””

Vanessa looked heartbroken.

“Naomi…”

“No.””

I backed away.

“You don’t get to do this.””

She cried.

“I’m not trying to hurt you.””

“Then stop telling me my entire life is a lie.””

Nobody spoke.

Then the phone in Grant’s hand suddenly rang.

He answered.

“Hello?””

His face changed within seconds.

“What?””

He looked at me.

Then at Vanessa.

Then at Lena.

“What hospital?””

My stomach dropped.

Grant ended the call.

“Who was it?””

He looked terrified.

“The hospital archives.””

“What about them?””

He swallowed.

“They found the original birth records.””

I felt frozen.

“And?””

Grant looked at me.

“There are two names listed as Lena’s mother.””

My blood ran cold.

“What?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at the paper again.

“That’s not the shocking part.””

I stared at him.

“What is?””

Grant slowly handed me the document.

At the bottom were two signatures.

One belonged to Vanessa.

The other belonged to someone else.

Someone I never expected.

My own name.

May you like

And beneath it was a sentence that made my entire body go numb.

*Naomi Carter was recorded as the biological mother of Lena Whitmore eighteen years before she ever met Vanessa.*
