Chapter 3: The Secret Behind Lena’s Birth
For five seconds, I couldn’t move.
The entire room seemed to disappear.
The voices around me faded.
The mansion.
The hallway.
The documents scattered across the floor.
Everything became distant.
Because there was only one sentence repeating in my mind.
I’m Lena’s biological father.
My hand tightened around the phone.
“That’s impossible.””
The voice on the other end was quiet.
“I knew you would say that.””
I looked at Attorney Grant.
He was watching me carefully.
Almost like he already knew who was calling.
And that terrified me more than the stranger’s words.
“Who are you?”” I asked.
The man took a slow breath.
“My name is Daniel Cross.””
The name meant nothing.
But the reaction around me did.
Vanessa’s face changed instantly.
Not surprise.
Not confusion.
Fear.
Real fear.
She stepped toward me.
“Hang up.””
I turned away from her.
“Why?””
“Because he’s lying.””
Daniel heard her voice.
A bitter laugh came through the phone.
“She’s still doing that.””
My heart pounded.
“How do you know Vanessa?””
There was a long silence.
Then Daniel answered.
“Because she took my daughter too.””
My knees almost gave out.
I looked at Lena.
My little girl was still holding my hand.
Watching.
Listening.
Trying to understand a world that was suddenly becoming more complicated by the second.
“Lena is my daughter,” I said.
The words came out firmly.
Because they were true.
Biology had never been what made me her mother.
Love did.
The sleepless nights.
The hospital visits.
The scraped knees.
The bedtime stories.
The first day of kindergarten.
Every moment I spent raising her.
That was motherhood.
But Daniel’s voice softened.
“I’m not saying you aren’t her mother, Naomi.””
I froze.
“I’m saying Vanessa lied to both of us.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Don’t listen to him.””
I looked at her.
“You know who he is.””
She didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Grant stepped forward.
“Naomi, you need to come downstairs.””
I stared at him.
“Why?””
“Because this conversation needs to happen somewhere private.””
Vanessa laughed quietly.
“Private?””
Her eyes moved between us.
“After all this time, you finally want privacy?””
I looked at her.
“What happened?””
Her lips parted.
But no words came out.
Daniel spoke again.
“Naomi, ask her about the night Lena was born.””
My entire body went still.
The night Lena was born.
A memory I had replayed thousands of times.
The hospital room.
The tiny cry.
The way I held her against my chest.
The way Vanessa cried beside me.
Or at least, that was what I remembered.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Why would he tell me to ask about that night?””
She looked away.
And that small movement answered everything.
“Vanessa.””
Her voice dropped.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then help me understand.””
She closed her eyes.
“I was scared.””
I almost laughed.
“Scared?””
“Yes.””
“Scared of what?””
She looked at Lena.
Then at me.
“Losing her.””
The words hung in the air.
Grant’s expression hardened.
“You need to be careful, Vanessa.””
But she kept going.
“You think I’m the villain because I wanted to keep my daughter.””
Lena whispered:
“But Mommy…”
Vanessa looked at her.
“I did everything for you.””
Lena’s eyes filled with tears.
“No. You did everything because you were afraid.””
The room became silent.
I stared at my daughter.
Where had she learned that?
How long had she been carrying these thoughts alone?
Daniel’s voice came through the phone.
“Naomi, she never told you the truth about the adoption paperwork.””
My heart stopped.
“Adoption?””
Vanessa immediately reached for the phone.
“Give me that.””
I stepped back.
“What adoption paperwork?””
Nobody answered.
That was the moment I knew there was something much bigger than a custody fight.
Something buried.
Something carefully hidden.
Grant rubbed his forehead.
“I was hoping this would not come out like this.””
I looked at him.
“You knew?””
His silence was devastating.
“You knew?””
Grant swallowed.
“I knew there were complications.””
“Complications?””
My voice rose.
“My daughter’s entire identity is being questioned, and you call that complications?””
Lena flinched.
I immediately lowered my voice.
“I’m sorry, sweetheart.””
She nodded.
But she looked scared.
Not of me.
Of everything happening around her.
I knelt beside her.
“Lena, look at me.””
She did.
“No matter what anyone says, nothing changes how much I love you.””
Her bottom lip trembled.
“Even if I’m not…”
She stopped.
I grabbed her hand.
“Don’t finish that sentence.””
“But what if I’m not really yours?””
My heart broke.
“Listen to me. A mother is not just someone whose name appears on a paper.””
I looked directly at her.
“A mother is the person who stays.””
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
“And you stayed.””
I pulled her into my arms.
For a moment, nothing else mattered.
Not Vanessa.
Not the court.
Not the secrets.
Just my daughter.
But then Daniel spoke again.
“She deserves to know the whole truth.””
I slowly stood.
“Tell me.””
Vanessa’s face tightened.
“Naomi, don’t.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
She had no answer.
So I turned back to the phone.
“Daniel. Tell me.””
He was quiet for a moment.
Then he said:
“Lena was born after Vanessa and I were together.””
My breathing stopped.
I looked at Vanessa.
She didn’t deny it.
“I was there when Lena was born,” Daniel continued.
“I signed the hospital paperwork. I held her before you ever did.””
A sharp pain went through my chest.
Not jealousy.
Not anger.
Confusion.
Because I remembered the hospital.
I remembered Vanessa telling me Lena was mine.
I remembered the documents.
The birth certificate.
Everything.
“How?”” I whispered.
Daniel answered:
“Because three days after Lena was born, Vanessa changed the paperwork.””
Grant closed his eyes.
Like he had been waiting for this moment.
I turned toward him.
“You knew.””
He looked ashamed.
“I found out later.””
“Found out what?””
Grant hesitated.
“That Lena’s birth records had been altered.””
The room felt colder.
I looked at Vanessa.
“You changed her records?””
She finally broke.
“I had no choice.””
“There is always a choice.””
“You don’t know what it was like.””
“No,” I said.
“I know what it’s like to have my child taken away.””
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“I was going to lose everything.””
Daniel interrupted.
“You were afraid I would fight for custody.””
Vanessa looked toward the phone.
“You disappeared.””
“I disappeared because you told me Lena died.””
The words struck everyone silent.
Even Vanessa looked shocked.
Lena covered her mouth.
I stared.
“What?””
Daniel’s voice cracked.
“She told me our daughter didn’t survive the birth.””
I looked at Vanessa.
The color drained from her face.
“You told him she died?””
She whispered:
“I panicked.””
“No.””
My voice was quiet.
But firm.
“You planned.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“You don’t understand.””
“I understand enough.””
Officer Blake, who had been standing silently near the doorway, looked uncomfortable.
“Mrs. Whitmore, if these claims are true, this may involve more than a custody dispute.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You believe them?””
He glanced at Lena.
“I believe there are questions that need answers.””
The mansion suddenly felt different.
The walls that had protected Vanessa for years no longer looked powerful.
They looked like a cage.
Grant took the envelope from Lena’s room.
The one addressed to the private investigator.
He carefully opened it.
Inside was a stack of photographs.
His face changed as he looked through them.
“What is it?”” I asked.
He didn’t answer immediately.
Then he handed me the first photograph.
It showed Vanessa standing outside a hospital.
Holding a newborn baby.
My hands started trembling.
Because in the corner of the photograph was a date.
The same date Lena was born.
And beside Vanessa stood a man I had never seen before.
Daniel’s voice came quietly through the phone.
“Naomi…”
I looked at the photograph.
“Who is that?””
Daniel answered:
“That’s the man Vanessa paid to make sure Lena never found out who her real father was.””
I stared at the stranger’s face.
Then Grant pulled out another document from the envelope.
A document that made his expression turn completely serious.
“This changes everything.””
I looked at him.
“What is it?””
He handed me the paper.
At the top was a name.
A name that made Vanessa step backward.
Because it wasn’t Daniel’s.
It wasn’t mine.
It was Lena’s.
May you like
And underneath it was a sentence that made my blood run cold.
