Chapter 4: The Mother Who Was Never Supposed to Know
The words on the document blurred in front of my eyes.
*Request for legal termination of parental rights.*
I read it again.
Then again.
As if the letters would rearrange themselves into something less painful.
But they didn’t.
The paper remained the same.
A legal request.
A signature.
A date.
And at the bottom, the name of the child I had spent my entire life protecting.
Lena.
My fingers tightened around the document.
“What is this?””
Nobody answered.
The silence was worse than any accusation.
I looked at Grant.
“You said this changes everything.””
He nodded slowly.
“It does.””
“Then explain it.””
He glanced at Vanessa.
“She filed a petition.””
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
“No.””
Grant looked at her.
“You did.””
“I never intended for it to go through.””
I stared at her.
“Then why file it?””
Her eyes moved away.
That was becoming her favorite answer.
Looking away.
Avoiding.
Hiding.
I stepped closer.
“You tried to erase me from Lena’s life.””
“No.””
“You tried to erase her father.””
“No.””
“You changed her records.””
Vanessa’s voice cracked.
“I was trying to protect her.””
I looked at Lena.
My daughter stood frozen beside the staircase.
She was hearing every word.
Every horrible detail.
And I hated that.
I hated that adults had created a storm around a child who only wanted to know she was loved.
I walked toward her and lowered myself.
“Lena, go with Officer Blake for a minute, okay?””
Her eyes widened.
“Are you leaving?””
The question broke me.
“No.””
I held her hands.
“Never.””
“Promise?””
I nodded.
“I promise.””
Officer Blake gently guided her toward the living room.
When Lena was gone, I turned back.
“Now tell me the truth.””
Vanessa sat down slowly.
For the first time, she looked smaller.
Not powerful.
Not untouchable.
Just a person who had run out of places to hide.
“I didn’t know what to do.””
I stared at her.
“That’s not an answer.””
She looked at me.
“When Daniel found out about Lena, he wanted custody.””
“Of course he did.””
“He had money. Lawyers. Connections.””
“So you lied.””
“I was afraid.””
“You made everyone believe he was dead to her.””
Her eyes filled.
“I thought if he disappeared, Lena would be safe.””
Daniel’s voice came through my phone.
“You didn’t protect her.””
Vanessa flinched.
“You took her from me.””
“I was protecting her from losing everything.””
“No,” Daniel said.
“You were protecting yourself.””
Vanessa looked toward the phone.
“You weren’t there.””
“I was.””
“No, you weren’t.””
Her voice grew louder.
“You weren’t there when she had a fever. You weren’t there when she cried at night. You weren’t there when she took her first steps.””
The room went quiet.
Because those were the moments I knew.
The moments I lived.
And suddenly I understood something painful.
Vanessa didn’t just want Lena.
She wanted to prove she deserved Lena more than anyone else.
Even if it meant hurting her.
Grant closed the folder.
“Regardless of the reasons, filing a false petition and withholding court information are serious matters.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You’re going to destroy me?””
“No.””
Grant’s expression was cold.
“You did that yourself.””
Her face hardened.
“You think you’re better than me?””
“No.””
He paused.
“I think Lena deserved honesty.””
The front door opened.
Everyone turned.
An older woman stepped inside.
She looked nervous.
She was holding a handbag tightly against her chest.
Vanessa immediately stood.
“Mother.””
The woman looked at her.
“I couldn’t stay away.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Who is she?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
The woman looked at me.
“My name is Evelyn Whitmore.””
Vanessa’s mother.
She looked nothing like Vanessa.
Where Vanessa always appeared controlled, Evelyn looked tired.
Like she had been carrying a secret for too long.
“I heard what happened,” Evelyn said.
Vanessa’s face changed.
“Mom, don’t.””
But Evelyn continued.
“She needs to know.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
Evelyn looked at Grant.
Then at me.
“Vanessa wasn’t the only person who hid things from you.””
The room became silent.
I looked at Grant.
Then back at Evelyn.
“What does that mean?””
She sat down.
“When Lena was born, there was a complication.””
My heartbeat increased.
“What kind of complication?””
Evelyn looked at Vanessa.
“You were scared.””
Vanessa whispered:
“Stop.””
But Evelyn shook her head.
“No more.””
She looked at me.
“You deserve the truth.””
I waited.
“After Lena was born, Vanessa discovered Daniel was her biological father.””
I nodded.
“I know that part.””
“No,” Evelyn said softly.
“You know the result.””
She looked down.
“You don’t know what happened before.””
I felt a chill.
“What happened?””
Evelyn took a deep breath.
“Vanessa was told she could lose custody.””
“Because Daniel was the father?””
“Because Vanessa had hidden the pregnancy from him.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“You knew?””
She didn’t answer.
Evelyn continued.
“She believed Daniel would take Lena away.””
“So she changed the records.””
“Yes.””
My chest tightened.
“But why was my name put there?””
Nobody spoke.
That was the question I had been afraid to ask.
The question that had been sitting in the back of my mind since Daniel’s call.
Why me?
Why had I been chosen?
Evelyn looked at me.
“Because Vanessa needed someone she trusted.””
I felt sick.
“What?””
“She needed a person who would love Lena.””
I stepped back.
“No.””
Vanessa whispered:
“Naomi…”
“No.””
I looked at her.
“You’re saying you used me?””
Tears filled her eyes.
“That wasn’t how it started.””
“Then how did it start?””
Vanessa looked down.
“When we became friends, I knew you couldn’t have children.””
The room went silent.
My breath caught.
I remembered.
The years of doctor appointments.
The painful conversations.
The moments when I thought motherhood would never happen for me.
Vanessa had known.
She had known how badly I wanted a child.
And she used that.
“I thought you would love her,” Vanessa whispered.
I stared at her.
“Love her?””
My voice shook.
“I did love her.””
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
I wiped my tears.
“You don’t know what you gave me and then tried to take away.””
Vanessa started crying.
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
She had no answer.
“After ten years?””
Silence.
“After Lena graduated?””
Silence.
“After she stopped remembering me?””
Vanessa looked away.
That was her answer.
I turned toward Grant.
“What does the law say?””
He looked serious.
“That depends on several factors.””
“Tell me the truth.””
He hesitated.
“If the original records were falsified, the court will investigate biological parentage.””
My heart sank.
“And me?””
He looked at me.
“You may have to prove your parental rights were established through your relationship with Lena.””
I looked toward the living room.
Where my daughter was waiting.
The child who called me Mommy.
The child who saved my letters.
The child who ran into my arms.
I whispered:
“She’s my daughter.””
Grant nodded.
“I know.””
“But will the court?””
He didn’t answer.
And that scared me.
Because I had spent months fighting Vanessa.
I thought the enemy was one person.
I never imagined I would have to fight a system that might look at my daughter and see only paperwork.
A sound came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Lena appeared again.
She was holding something.
A small notebook.
“Mommy?””
I turned.
“What is it?””
She walked toward me.
“I found this.””
The notebook was old.
The cover was faded.
She handed it to me.
“Vanessa told me never to open it.””
My heart stopped.
“Why?””
Lena looked at Vanessa.
“Because she said it would make me hate her.””
Nobody moved.
I opened the notebook.
The first page contained handwriting.
But it wasn’t Vanessa’s.
It wasn’t mine.
It was a child’s handwriting.
A child who was too young to understand secrets.
The first sentence made my hands shake.
*My name is Lena Whitmore, and Mommy says I have another mother who doesn’t know the truth.*
I looked up slowly.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Because she knew.
This notebook wasn’t just proof.
It was Lena’s memory.
And on the next page was a sentence written years ago.
May you like
A sentence that revealed Vanessa had been planning this long before I ever came to the mansion.
*Tomorrow, Mommy says we have to leave before Naomi finds out what happened.*
