Chapter 18 - THE CONFESSION AND THE TRUTH

The police burst in minutes later.

They took Vanessa away in handcuffs. She walked without struggle, still staring at me as if she knew something I did not.

Paramedics worked over Silas. The bullet had struck him in the shoulder. He was alive, but barely.

Clara sat beside the stretcher, holding his hand, refusing to let go.

I stood watching as they loaded him into the ambulance.

Arthur arrived shortly after. Pale but steady.

“Marcus is in custody,” he said quietly. “He confessed immediately. Told us everything. How he planned it all. How he helped Vanessa. How he… helped end your wife’s life.”

My chest tightened.

“And Vanessa?”

“She is refusing to speak,” Arthur said. “She gave us nothing. No confession. No explanation. Just silence.”

I looked toward the ambulance. Clara was climbing in beside Silas.

“Arthur… she said there was more. That this was never hers to win. What did she mean?”

Arthur looked at the farmhouse, then back at me.

“I do not know. But I will find out. I will dig until there is nothing left to uncover. You have my word.”

I nodded.

“Go to the hospital. Stay with Clara. Keep them safe. I will handle everything here.”

I drove to the hospital alone.

Silas was in surgery for hours. Clara sat in the waiting room, wrapped in a blanket, staring at the floor. She did not speak. She did not eat. She simply waited.

I sat beside her. In silence.

When the doctor finally came out, he looked tired but relieved.

“The bullet missed the major arteries,” he said. “He will recover. He needs rest… and time. But he will be fine.”

Clara let out a long, shaky breath. Tears finally spilled over.

She stood up to go to him. Then she paused. Turned back to me.

“Adrian… he saved your life.”

“I know,” I said. “And I will never forget it.”

Clara looked at me long and hard.

“He is not a bad man, Adrian. He was broken. And lied to. And used. Just like we all were.”

“I know,” I said again. “When he is well… I want to hear everything. From the beginning. All of it. No more secrets.”

Clara nodded slowly.

“All of it.”
