Chapter 12 - THE CHOICE BETWEEN BLOOD AND DUTY

We burst into the nursery.
The window was shattered.
Olivia was on the floor, shaken but unhurt.
And Emma… was gone.
Scrawled across the wall in dark paint were three words:
*SHE BELONGS TO US.*
Silas.
Clara ran to the broken window. She looked down into the garden. A car was speeding away.
“It was him,” she said. “He took her.”
I gripped the windowsill until my fingers ached. The pain in my chest was blinding. He had my daughter. He had Emma.
“Call the police,” I said. “Now.”
Clara grabbed my arm.
“No. If you bring the police… he will run. And he will take her where we will never find her. I know my brother. I know how he thinks. He will not hurt her. He wants to trade.”
“Trade?” I demanded. “For what?”
“For the letter,” Clara said. “The original confession. The one that proves our father was guilty. Silas wants it destroyed. He will trade Emma for that letter.”
“Then give it to him,” I said. “Whatever he wants. I will give him everything. Just bring her back.”
Clara looked at me with tears in her eyes.
“If you give him that letter… he will never stop. He will have nothing holding him back. He will destroy you. Olivia. Everything you love. But if you do not give it to him… he will kill her, Adrian. He truly will.”
I stared at her.
“Choose,” I whispered.
Clara closed her eyes.
“I will go. I will go to him. I will reason with him. He is my blood. He will listen to me.”
“He will kill you too,” I said.
“Then I will die trying to save her,” Clara said. “It is the only way I can ever truly make amends.”
She reached into her pocket and pulled out a folded piece of paper.
“He will be at the old family estate. The one your wife’s father took from us. Be there in two hours. Bring the letter. And come alone. If you value your other daughter… do exactly as I say.”
Clara climbed through the broken window.
“Clara!” I called out.
She stopped. Turned back.
“Trust me one last time, Adrian. If I fail… you must choose. Between the truth… and your family.”
Then she was gone.
I stood alone in the shattered nursery. Olivia sobbed behind me.
I looked at the letter in my hand. The confession. The only thing that kept Silas’s hatred in check.
And then I looked at my daughter’s empty crib.

I had two hours.
To destroy the truth… or to save my child.
